SWITCH-LOCK.
Application filed May 24, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLAUDE GRiMEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful .lmprov'ements in Switch-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to electric switches which may be locked to prevent unauthorized persons from operating the same. The present device is designed more particularly for use in connection with motor vehicles to lock the switches controlling the ignition circuit, thereby preventing the starting of the car by unauthorized persons.
The invention has for its object to provide a simple and efficient device of the kind stated, and to this end it consists in :a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In order that the invention may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
ln the drawing, Figure 1 is Van elevation of the mechanism, the housing inclosing the same being shown in section; Fig. 2 is a plan view; Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a face View of the lock.
Referring specically to the drawing, 10 denotes a suitable housing which incloses the switch mechanism, and carries a base plate 11 of insulation on which are mounted the stationary contacts 12 of the switch. The movable switch members are of the push-button type, they being shown at 13, and provided with shanks 14 carrying contacts 15 cooperating in the usual manner with the contacts 12. The switch buttons are mounted in the face plate or cover 16 of the housing 10. rlhe switch mechanism, per se, is the subject matter of a companion application and a detailed description thereof is therefore not necessary in the present application. It may be stated however that the several switch-buttons are operatively connected, so that when one is pushed in another one is retracted.
The shank of one of the switch-buttons 13 is operatively connected to a swinging member 17 in the form of a short lever ful- Specificaton of Letters Patent.

crumed at one end on a pin 18 carried by a support 19 suitably mounted in the housing 10. The connection between the lever and the button shank is made by a lever 20 fulcrumed on the pin 18 on the side of the support 19 opposite the side where the lever 17 is located, said levers 2O and 17 being connected at one end by a cross bar 21. Thus, it will be seen that the movement of the pushbutton shank swings the lever 17, and hence, if said lever should be held stationary, it will be impossible to operate the push-button, so that the switch will now be locked. The locking device comprises the following parts:
The support 19 carries a plate 26 having an arcuate slot 27 in which the pin 25 works. The plate 26 carries, in spaced relation therewith, a cross bar 28, the member 24 being lo-l cated between these parts, and mounted on a pivot pin 29 carried thereby.
On the pin 18 is fulcrumed a rocker member 30 having a pitman connection 31 with the member 24. The rocker 30 is mounted alongside the lever 17 and has a shoulder 31a which is in the path of a side pin or abutment 32 on the lever 17.
To lock the switch, the key is turned to move the parts so that the shoulder 31L engages the pin 32, and the key is then withdrawn from the lock. The member 30 now acts as a barrier to the lever 17 and prevents the swing thereof, and before the switch can be operated, the key must be used to retract the member 30.
I claim 1. The combination with a movable member; of a swinging member connected thereto and having an abutment, a lock having a rotatable barrel, a swinging barrier engageable with the abutment to lock the swingmember, a Side tongue on the lock barrel, ing member, and an operative connection and=a rotatable member havnganoperative l0 between said barrier and the lock barrel. connection with the swinging barrier, and
2. The combination With a vmovable memprovided with an abutment which is n the 5 ber; ci' a swinging member connected therepath of ,tbe-aforesaid tongue,
to and having an abutment,` alock-havng a In testimony whereof I affix my signature. rotatable barrel, a swinging barrier engageable With the abutment to lock the swinging CLAUDE GRIMES.
