To all whom it may concern: Be it known that 1, JOHN AYLING, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a" resident of the city of Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in water heaters, and the object of my invention is to devise a means for heating and boiling water, which is adapted to use liquid fuel in a safe and economical manner, and which is simple both in construction and operation and capable of being manufactured and sold at a low cost, thereby providing a device for such purpose which is of great utility and convenience to residents in country districts or out-of-the-way places.
I attain this object by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a view, in part section, showing the practical application of my device.

1 indicates a watertight box, from which extends vertically a chimney 2, of coil formation as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. 3 indicates a straight cold airinlet pipe also extending vertically from the box 1, while 4 indicates an oil inlet pipe the lower end of which is formed as a nozzle 5 and projects into the box, its upper end being connected to a. small fuel oil tank 6. A bar 7 rigidly connects the chimney 2 and pipes 3 and 4: together, which bar is provided with a handle 8 by means of which the heater may be moved at will. 9 indicates a number of firebricks disposed within the box and forming a non-combustible layer resting on the floor thereof, the sides of which bricks toward theirrtop edges are preferably beveled, and in order to increase the porosity of the bricks, I prefer to make them of half saw dust and half firecla'y so that in baking, the
saw dust being burned out, the bricks are rendered very porous. The box 1 is provided with feet 10, and the oil inlet pipe with a cock 11.
The manner in which my device is used will be apparent on reference being made to Fig. l, and may be described briefly as follows The heater is carried by means of handle 8 and placed in the barrel of water 12, in
' Fig. 1, or other receptacle, the small tank 6 being filled with fuel oil either before or after the device is placed in the water, there being about one quart of oil to the contents of an ordinary barrel. The arrangement of the parts is such that, when the device is placed ready for operation, the tank 6 stands above the top of the barrel and the mouth of pipe 3 is just about level there with. The cock 11 is now opened, allowing the oil to flow through pipe 4 and nozzle 5 on to the floor of box 1, from which it is taken by the porous firebricks, the bricks becoming thoroughly saturated with oil. A. lighted taper is introduced into the box through pipe 3, setting the oil saturated bricks on fire, thus generating heat in the box and the coils ofthelchimney sufficient to boil the water in a very short time. The oil saturated bricks continue to burn aslong as any oil remains in them'without any attention Whatever until combustion is stopped, which may be done by simply placing the hand over the mouth of pipe 3 to close the same. 1
It is not necessary to bevel the firebricks on each side, as already mentioned, but it is preferable to do so, as the flame rises more freely fromthe bricks so formed than it would do if their sides were perfectly straight up and down. i
It will thus be seen that my invention is simple in construction and operation, requiring little attention on the part of the user, is safe and not liable to get out of order, and that it can be manufactured and sold at a low cost.
What I claim as my invention is A new article of manufacture, a watertight box substantially rectangular in formation having a fiat bottom and a smoke outlet opening in its top, porous bricks arranged transversely in parallel rows on said bottom, each of said bricks being of slightly less width than the box and adapted to be passed through the smoke outlctjopening into the box and having its upper edges beveled, a straight air inlet pipe extending from the top of the box, a smoke pipe extending from said smoke outlet opening, said pipe being adapted for connection thereto after the said bricks are placed in the box, an elevated fuel tank, a fuel pipe connection between said tank and said box, a bar extending between the Smoke pipe, the air inbar and disposed to carry evenly the Weight 1@ of said article.
