2 SHEETS-SHEET 2- CHARLES WALKUSH, OF ASHLAND, WISCONSIN.
QUICKLY-MOUNTABLE SHADE AND CURTAIN SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 15, 1917.
Application filed May 19, 1916. Serial N 0. 98,554.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES WALKUSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Ashland and State'of Wisconsin. have invented a new and useful Quickly-Mountable Shade and Curtain Support, of which the following is a specification.
he main object of my invention is to provide a shade support which can be quickly secured in place in any window frame or removed therefrom, or shifted to adiflerent height, without the use of screws, nails or other usual fastening devices.
It is further my object to provide novel means for adjusting the shade support to lengths and to make such adjustment readily and rapidly without the use of bolts, screws or other usual fastening devices.
It is also my object to provide a novel angularly adjustable shade-supporting device adapted to be instantly applied to window frame members arranged at an obtuse angle toeach other regardless of the particular angle of such members to each other.
It is further my object to provide in combination with a quickly mountable shade support a removable curtain support having novel and simple means for securing it in the desired position and preventing it from moving from the proper position after it is once applied.
It is further my object to provide a device having the minimum number of parts practicable to attain a device that is quickly mountable without nails or screws and to provide parts that can be readily manufactured at relatively small expense.
It is of course an object of my invention to provide a novel combination and arrangement and positioning of parts for the purposes described and illustrated.
The objects of my invention are attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view of the device applied to a window, adjusted to a lowered position relative to the top of the window frame, so that the shade will not interfere with ventilation; Fig. 2 is a view of one of my shade and curtain supports with the curtain supporting member disconnected to more fully illustrate its constructlon; Fig. 3 is a side or edge view of the device; Fig.
bay window frame; Fig. 7
41 is a perspective of one of the shade sup port adjustable members; Fig. 5 is a detail of the resilient fastening device; Fig. 6 is a top plan of the invention applied to a is a perspective of the construction illustrated in Fig. 6 viewed from the front; and Fig. 8 is a detailed sectional view of member 4.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
eferring to the accompanying drawings, designates the window frame and B the ordinary shade roller or pole. I provide angularly disposed plates 1 and 4 engaging over the window frame, and having an outwardly offset extension 2 onmember 1. The upper edge of member 2 is provided with the slotted portions 3 illustrated in Fig. 2, in which the spaced looped portions 13 of member 11 adjustably engage. Member 11 is an adjustable support for the shade roller and is provided with suitable arms 12 suitably slotted to receive the shade roller ends. Combined with the outer end of extension 2 is a suitable socket 6 having a lateral enlargement 7, the socket 6 and enlargement 7 being shaped to receive the shank 8 and lateral projection 9 of a removable curtain pole support 10, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. I provide means for quickly securing the shade supports in position in a window frame, comprising a resilient telescopic fastening device comprising suitable telescopic members 17 and 14, having a suitable resilient member 16 mounted in member 14 and bearing on member 17 to press same outwardly, and I preferably provide suitable caps or. plugs 15 in the outer ends of members 14 and 17 as shown in Fig. 5.
In order that my shade support may be applied to bay windows as well as to window frames of the usual construction members 12 slightly modified in form from the usual construction of shade roller holding members by the provision of an elliptical opening 20 in place of the usual round opening to receive the end of the shade roller at the right side, and a slotted offset end 21 in place of the usual end that is not offset for the reception roller where the device is applied to bay windows. This same construction is also adapted for use where the device is applied to the ordinary window frames where the frame members are at right angles to each of the left end of the curtain 1w I have devised to quick mounting in 7 members 1- and 1, as
other, or it is within my contemplation to employ shade roller holding members of the ordinary construction for such windows if preferred. The particular shape of members 12 described is to allow for the angular relation of such members to the shade roller member in bay windows to permit of convenient mounting of the roller without requiring adjustment of the position of members 12. To adapt the shade support which bay hinge connection for illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, a leaf spring 19 being provided to facilitate the quick mounting of the shade support in position to engage window frames the members of which are positioned at an obtuse angle to each other instead of at the usual right angles, this requiring merely the addition of the members mentioned without modifying the operation and method of securing the shade support without the use of nails and screws as illustrated.
The operation of the invention requires merely the applying of the shade supporting plates 1 and 41 in position to engage over the members of the window frame at whatever height desired and the locking of plates 1 inplace by the pressure of the resiliently outwardly pressed members 17 and 14, the ends of which engage plat-es a, preferably within the annular outwardly pressed portion 5 as shown. The curtain pole support may be readily removed if not desired, being held firmly in place in the desired adjusted position by the engagement of projection 9 in the slotted portion 7, any suitable number of slots being provided therein to admit of adjustment of curtain support 10 for use in the usual window frame or for bay window constructions. As will be understood the curtain pole support may be adjusted to either an obtuse angle to member 1 or ordinarily will be positioned at right angles thereto. It is held securely windows I provide a Copies of this patent may be obtained for in place against any swinging movement by projection 9, as illustrated.
It is within the contemplation of my invention to vary the proportions or sizes of parts or make other minor modifications not involving a substantial departure from the operation and construction set forth.
What I'claim is:
1. In a quickly mountable shade support, the combination of opposite bracket mem bers each comprising plates hingedly connected to engage over the angular portion of a window frame, the upper plates having slotted portions, members adjustably mounted in said slotted portions of the upper plates to adapt the device for use with rollers of different lengths, and a resiliently extensible fastening device comprising telescopingmembers one having a spiral spring arranged to press the other telescoping member outwardly to press against the opposite plates of the bracket members, to permit of quickly mounting and adjusting the device in a window frame.
2. In a quickly mountable shade and ourtain support, the combination 'of opposite bracket members each-- comprising plates hingedly connected to engage over the angular portion of a window frame, the upper plates having slotted portions, shade roller supporting members adjustably engaging in shade roller supporting said slotted portions of the upper plates,
removable and angularly adjustable curtaln supporting members having a lateral projection, slotted socket portions on the bracket plates to adjustably support the curtain pole supports, and a resiliently extensible fastening device adapted to engage opposite plates of. the bracket members to quickly mount and adjust the device in a window frame, substantially as set forth.
