ALBERT J". HITCH, 0F WINDSOR, ONTARIO, CANADA.
PAPER-HANGING MACHINE.
Application filed September 5, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT J. HITCH, a subject of the King of England, residing at Windsor, in the county of Essex and Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Hanging Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a paper hanging machine, and my invention aims to provide a machine by which paper may be eX- peditiously applied to various surfaces, particularly the walls and ceilings of a room.
My invention further aims to provide a paper hanging machine embodying a paste receptacle, a roll receptacle, a paste roller, and a paper applying device. The paper applying device is adapted to serve as pintles for a paper roll within the machine and said device may be swung to various operative positions dependin upon the manner in which the machine is used. The machine in its entirety is designed for easy manipulation, in diflI'erent positions so that the paper may be applied to various surfaces.
My invention is further characterized by a machine consisting of comparatively few parts that are easy to assemble, and my invention resides in matters that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the machine;
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view of the same, illustrating the manner of applying paper to a wall;
Fig. 3 is an end view of the machine illustrating the manner of applying paper to a ceiling, and
Fig. 4; is a plan of a roller attachment.
The machine is preferably made of galvanized sheet metal or a non-corrodible material, and it comprises end walls 1 having extensions 2 and 3. Connecting the end walls 1 is a channel-shaped bottom plate 4: and a C-shaped housing 5, said channelshaped bottom plate cooperating with the end walls 1 in providing a paste receptacle, and the C-shaped housing 5 cooperating with the extension 3 of the end wall in providing a paper roll receptacle.
. The extensions 20f the end walls 1 afford Specification of Letters Eatent.

Serial No. 118,353.
bearings for the pintles 6 of the guide roller 7, and the end walls 1 are slotted as at 8 to receive the pintles 9 of a paste roller 10.
This roller may be covered with rubber or a non-absorptive material and extends well into the paste receptacle, as best shown in Fig. 2. The end walls 1 also afford a bearing for the pintles of a guide roller 11, while the pintles for a wall paper roll 12 are of a brush frame or bail 15. The pintles for the paper roll 12 are designated 14 and are formed by bending inwardly the ends of the brush frame or bail, the brush frame or bail supporting a brush 15, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 or a roller 16 as shown in Fig. 4;. V
The brush 15 is of the ordinary and well known type used by paper hangers, and the bail or frame is connected to the end of the brush by staples 17 or other fastening means. The sides of the bail or frame have lateral outstanding portions 18 which facilitate manipulating the brush and the bail or frame, as will hereinafter appear.
With the wall paper roll 12 held within the receptacle by the pintles or ends of the brush bail or frame, the outer end of the paper is trained under guide roller 11, over the paste roller 10 and under the guide roller 7. Considering Fig. 2 of the drawing, the pasted side of the paper can be placed against a wall and the brush 15 brought into action to smooth the paper upon the wall and cause the paper to evenly adhere thereto. The wall paper roll receptacle constitutes a hand grip by which the machine can be easily manipulated. With the hands gripping each end of the wall paper roll receptacle, the thumbs or fingers can be extended to engage the portions 18 of the brush bail or frame to bring pressure to bear upon the bail or frame so that the brush 15 will positively cause the paper to adhere to the wall.
As shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing, the machine is reversed when applying paper to the ceiling. The free end of the paper roll is carried rearwardly over the top of the machine and the brush frame or bail is swung upwardly so that the brush 15 may follow under the paper and cause the same toradhere to the ceiling. The machine can be easily supported by the hands when in this position and the brush bail or frame manipulated by the thumbs engaging the lateral portions 18 of the bail or frame.
The end walls 1 of the machine, at the paper roll receptacle thereof is provided with clips 19 which may be employed for holding the brush bail or frame 15 in an inactive or raised position, particularly when placing the roll within the receptacle and when placing a quantity of paste in the paste receptacle. By reference to Fig. 2 it may be noted that the wall paper in passing over the paste roller 10 practically closes the upper end of the paste receptacle, thus precluding any danger of the paste splashing about.
It is thought that the operation and utility of the machine will be apparent without further description, and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are suspectible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A paper hanging machine comprising end walls, a paste receptacle supported thereby, a paste roller in said receptacle, guide rollers between said end walls, a paper roll receptacle carried by said end walls, a brush, and a bail supporting said brush and having ends thereof extending through said end walls to provide pintles for a paper roll in the paper roll receptacle. 7
2. A paper hanging machine comprising end walls, a channel-shaped bottom plate carried thereby and providing a paste receptacle, a paste roller in said receptacle, a C-shaped housing carried by said end walls and providing a paper roll receptacle, a
paper applying device having ends pivotally connected to said end walls and extending therethrough to serve as pintles for a paper roll in said housing, and guide rollers sup ported by said end Walls and adapted for maintaining paper from the paper roll on the paste roller and over the paste receptacle.
3. A paper hanging machine comprising a paste receptacle, a paper roll receptacle, a paper applying device having ends thereof extending into the paper roll receptacle and adapted as pintles for a paper roll, said paper applying device having lateral portions to facilitate manipulating said device when said machine is held in the hands, and means in said paste receptacle adapted for guiding paper from the paper roll through said paste receptacle.
4. A paper hanging machine comprising a paste receptacle, a paste roller therein, a paper roll receptacle, a brush, a bail supporting said brush and having the ends thereof pivotally mounted in the ends of said paper roll receptacle and adapted for supporting a paper roll therein, and guide rollers in said paste receptacle adapted to retain paper from said roll on said paste roller and as a closure for said paste receptacle.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT J. HITCH.
