Description

March .1959 P. c. MOCACHREN PAPER ROLL HOLDER Filed May 31, 1957 H/s ATTK United States Patent 6 PAPER ROLL HOLDER Parks C. McCachren, Santa Fe, N. Mex. Application May 31, 1957, Serial No. 662,617
' 1 Claim. (Cl. 225-89) This invention relates to a paper roll holder, and has for one of its objects the production of a simple and efficient holder for toilet paper rolls, and other paper rolls, or sheet material, of a similar nature.
Another object of the present invention is the production of a simple and efficient means for facilitating the insertion of, as well as the removal of, a roll upon and from a holder.
A further object of the present invention is the production of a simple and efficient roll holder, the parts of which are stamped from blank sheets of material, and which parts may be easily and quickly assembled to provide an economical and efficient paper roll holder.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will appear throughout the following specification and claim.
Inthe drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the holder;
Figure 2 is a front elevational view thereof, illustrating the manner of releasing the hinged arm from engagement with a toilet or other paper roll;
, Figure 3 is a plan view, reduced in size, of the blank from which the support engaging portion of the holder is formed;
Figure 4 is a plan view, reduced in size, of the blank from which the companion or releasing arm or portion of the holder is formed;
Figure 5 is a plan view of the blank from which the finger engaging element of the releasing arm is formed.
By referring to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that designates the support engaging portion which is preferably formed from a blank sheet of suitable material, such as is shown in Figure 3 of the drawing. This portion 10 comprises a support abutting tongue 11 which is bent downwardly at substantially right-angles to a forwardly extending arm 12. This arm 12, in turn, carries an integral laterally extending horizontal arm 13, which carries at its outer end a depending arm 14, at substantially right-angles to the arm 13. The arm 14 carries at its lower extremity an inturned substantially horizontal transversely curved integral roll supporting plate 15. The support abutting tongue 11 is adapted to be secured to a wall or other support 16 by means of suitable screws 17. The support engaging portion 10 carries a hinge tongue 18 near its forward edge 19 and this tongue extends in an opposite direction relative to the arm 13 and in substantial alignment with the arm 13 and is rolled to provide a hinge knuckle as is indicated in Figure 1.
An L-shaped releasing arm 20 which is preferably formed from a blank sheet of material, as is shown in Figure 4, is hinged to the support engaging portion 10, in the manner shown in Figure 1. This releasing arm 20 comprises a horizontal arm 21 and a depending rightangularly extending arm 22. A pair of parallel tongues 23 are carried by the inner end of the arm 21, and are rolled to provide hinge knuckles to receive a suitable 2,879,932 Patented Mar. 31, 1959 "ice pintle to hingedly connect the releasing arm 20 for upward swinging movement relative to the support engaging portion 10. This depending arm 22 carries an inturned substantially horizontal transversely curved roll supporting plate 24 at its lower extremity. The plates 15 and 24, when supporting a roll of paper 25, or other sheet material, shown in dotted lines in Figure 2, extend in substantial longitudinal alignment, as shown.
A vertically extending element 26 is carried by the upper face of the arm 21 of the releasing arm 20. This finger engaging bracket 26 is preferably bowed or dished from its bottom to its top edge to facilitate efficient contact with the finger of an operator during operation, as shown in Figure 2..
The operation of the holder is as follows:
When it is desired to place a new roll of paper in the holder, the operator merely places his finger against the bracket 26 and presses inwardly, to swing the releasing arm 20 from the full line position to the dotted line position, shown in Figure 2. The roll of paper 25 may be gripped by the opposite hand of the operator and removed or replaced. The roll supporting plates 15 and 24 are adapted to fit within the conventional cardboard tube of the roll of paper 25, and as the releasing arm 20 is swung to the dotted line releasing position, the plate 24 will be withdrawn from engagement with the roll of paper 25. When the roll of paper has been replaced, the arm 20 is released from the operators finger and the arm 20 will swing to the full line position through the pull of gravity. The plate 24 will then fit in one end of the roll of paper and efiiciently support the roll of paper in an operative position until a further re-fill is desired.
It will be noted that the forward edge 19 of the horizontal arm 13, and the forward edge of the horizontal arm 21, extend in transverse alignment across the front portion of the holder, when the releasing arm 20 is in a .roll holding position so as to facilitate the tearing off of a sheet section of paper as the paper is pulled back against the forward edges of the horizontal arms.
13 and 21. The vertically extending bracket 26, which extends above the top surface of the arm 21 is of importance in the convenient operation of the holder when releasing or replacing the roll of paper 25. The bracket 26 is merely engaged by a finger of an operator, and by pressing inwardly the roll of paper 25 is quickly released for removal or replacement. The bowed nature of the vertical bracket will prevent the finger from disengagement therewith during operation. Because of the structure illustrated and described, it will not be necessary for an operator to tediously grip the releasing arm between his fingers with the danger that the arm may slip from his grip between the fingers or injure his fingers. In the present structure, the upstanding bracket 26 is easily accessible for instant efficient operation.
The advantages of the present invention are restated as follows:
(1) First it is so simple to operate. A child assigned to do the small chores in the home can easily insert a roll by simply holding roll with right hand, and using finger tip of left hand to push lever down Insert roll and remove finger from lever. It can be inserted in the dark.
(2) There are no complicated mechanisms to get out of working order, also none to operate while inserting tissue.
(3) There are no springs attached to break, rust, or retard the working of the holder, which sometimes cannot be replaced.
(4) Once the roll has been inserted, both sides of holder fit firmly against roll, which enables you to unroll only desired sheets from roll. necessary unraveling.
(5) Since holder has only one point to attach to wall, installation can be made easily, by attaching to strips, corners, between window and cabinet. If necessary, the roll can begin insertion from one end at a 40 angle.
6) When you get desired sheets of tissue unrolled, a quick upward pull of tissue, up against top of front holder frame immediately breaks sheets at desired point.
(7) By forming the parts from sheet material, sheet metal, plastic, or the like, this will facilitate assembly and reduce cost to a minimum.
It will be noted that certain detail changes in the construction and arrangement of parts may be employed without departing from the invention, so long as such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A holder 01- a roll of sheet material comprising a support engaging portion, an L-shaped releasing arm 'hingedly secured to .said support engaging portion, said Also reduces un- 4 support engaging portion and said releasing arm having companion roll supporting elements, an upstanding bracket carried by said releasing arm for engagement by an operator to swing said releasing arm away from a roll of sheet material normally supported by said support engaging portion and said releasing arm, to swing the roll supporting element of said releasing arm out of engagement with a roll supported thereby for removal or replacement of said roll, said L-shaped releasing arm being hingedly connected to said support engaging portion at a point intermediate the lateral surface of the roll thereby providing forward aligned edges for facilitating the tearing of sheets of material from the roll when a sheet is pulled against said forward aligned edges.
