Description

A. VAN BUREN.
PIPE APPLICATION min APR-21,1916- 1,224,980, Patented May 8, 1917.
rirn.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 8, 1917.
Application filed April 21, 1916. Serial No. 92,781.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it l'mown that I, ALEXANDER VAN BUREN, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of East Quogue, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to smokers appliances and particularly to pipes.
An object of this invention is to produce a pipe having associated with its stem a storage receptacle for containing matches, the said receptacle having a cover movable for anchoring the closure, the said cover being mounted in a manner to permit its ready movement in a plane parallel with the side of the closure on which the said door is mounted.
A further object of this invention is to provide novel means for holding the door in position to guard the inclosure, the said means being of such construction as to readily interlock whereas the part of the door to be manipulated for moving the door is in such relation to the parts of the pipe and door as not to interfere with the manipulation of the pipe itself or with the storage of the pipe in a case or pocket.-
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which-- Figure 1 illustrates a view in elevat1on of a pipe embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 illustrates a longitudinal sectional view of the said pipe, themouth piece being in elevation;
Fig. 3 illustrates a sectional view on a line corresponding with the line 3--3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4: illustrates a section 011 the line corresponding with the line 4:-4: of Fig. 2.
In these drawings 5 denotes the bowl of the pipe, 6 the stem and 7 the bite or mouth piece.
In the present embodiment of the invention, the stem is relatively wider than stems now in common use and the widened or enlarged portion is provided with a longitudinally disposed slot 8 forming a compartment or receptacle for smokers commodities, such as matches, the said slot being formed into a closure by applying a plate 9 to one side face of the stem, or the enlarged portion thereof and securing the said plate in place by any appropriate fastenings 10.
The opposite side or face of the enlarged portion of the stem is recessed slightly as shown at 11 and a cover 12 is mounted on a pivot 13 so as to swing in a plane parallel with the plane of the side of the stem, so that it may be moved to an open position, as shown in Fig. 1, or closed and held closed by reason of the engagement of the head of the stud 14 with the side of the door or closure, the said stud lying in the slot 15 formed in the said door.
The door is further provided with an ear or lug 16 which is bent at right angles to the door proper and lies parallel with the end 17 of the enlarged portion of the stem. The member 16 constitutes a hand hold which may be, grasped for manipulating the door in opening and closing it, it being understood that it must be disengaged from the stud and sprung sufficiently to clear the head of the stud when the door is to be opened.
The plate 9 and the door 12 have serrations such as 18 or the surfaces may be roughened in any appropriate way to increase the friction when matches are to be struck or lighted by running them over the surface of either the plate or the door.
By reason of the fact that the stud 14 has a head on which it lies close to the side of the door and the position of the member 16 with relation to the end of the enlarged portion of the stem, affords means for holding the door closed and for manipulating it, which do not project or prove cumbersome when the pipe is to be stored.
I claim A pipe having a stem with an enlarged portion below its smoke passage, said en- In testimony whereof, I affix my signature larged portion having a transverse slot, at in the presence of tWo Witnesses. plate secured to one side of the enlarged ALEXANDER VAN BUREN. portion covering the slot, and a pivoted door Witnesses:
