The usefulness of such an article of clothing will bereadily appreciated by anyone ,who has occasion to be much in the open air, and therefore subject to sudden changes of temperature. Thegarment will also-be appreciated by those who unexpect edly find themselves, under circumstances where the wearing of a vest orthe lack of a vest wouldbeiinappropriate. E

The arrangement and operation of the invention is the attaching of a pair of flaps to a coatprovided with interior pockets into which the flaps may be folded when they are not being'used as a vest. Such an arrangement, while apparently very easy of execution, presents a number of clifficnlt features from the tailoring point of view, and which if not properly solved render the resulting garmentboth uncomfort able and ludicrous This invention is therefore more. particularly directed to these details of construction which are essential to the production of a comfortable and s'ightly garment, one of which isthe fitting vest flaps'around the collar and another the connectionbetween v and coat, which avoids dragging the coat and which permits the wearer to easily draw s trouser pockets.

At the lower end, each flap 16 is provided with a rearwardly projecting arm or extension 18, which terminates in an elastic portion 19 located between the shell and lining These elastic portions 19 may be secured so that the two halves of the 'vestare' connected across the back and the vest thus held snugly to the body. These extensions 18 and the elastic portion 19 hold the flaps, when worn as a vest, yieldably to theibody, while the separation of the vest flaps an'd'coat in the lower portion permits the coat to-b'e easily drawn backas in placing the hands in the trouserpockets, without dragging onthe or wrinkling the coat in such a manner as tomake it perfectly obvious that the garment is a combination one. The rear edge of the coat facing and the forward edge of the lining are provided with cooperating fasteners 21 which serve to releasably secure the lining to the facing when the vest flaps are folded within the pockets 13. These fasteners are concealed by the lining during folded position of the vest flaps, and are placed so close to the attachment of the coat and vest flaps that when the flaps are extended and in use, the fasteners are invisible, unless the coat is deliberately held open in such a way as to exhibit same.

The operation of the garment is extremely simple, and will be readily understood. \Vhen it is desired to wear the same as a coat only, the flaps 16 are folded into the pockets 13 and the lining secured to the facing by means of the fasteners 21 to close the pockets, rendering the same invisible and confining the vest flaps therein. l/Vhen it is desired to wear the garment as a coat and vest, the lining and facing are separatedand the flaps withdrawn and buttoned over the wearers body in the ordinary manner. Before securing the flaps one to the other, the upper corners of the same are secured'to the coat collar by means of the Copies of this patent may be fasteners 17, 17, so that the upper edges of the vest flaps are held well up and slightly away from the wearers body, so that they will not catch under the wearers shirt collar, thus producing a discomfort and unsightly appearance. .The operation of the garment may easily be effected while the same is being worn, and in an extremely short space of time.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is In a garment, a coat provided with facing and lining and having inside pockets opened from the front at the junction of the facing and lining, a flap permanently secured to each side of the coat immediately within the pocket opening and releasably securable at its upper end to the coat when withdrawn from the pocket, said flaps being unconnected with the coat in their lower portions, rearward extensions of the flaps in the portions thereof unattached to the coat, and elastic connections between said rearward extensions and the coat.
