To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Enron H. Lior rnN- BERG, a citizen of the United States, residmg at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand- Operated Chutes, of which the following is a specification.
In United States Letters Patent Number 1,178,396, issued April 4, 1916 to me, there is set forth certain novel apparatus in the form of a concrete distributing chute forming an .attachment for mixing machines, and which chute is susceptible of being lengthened and shortened to vary the distance from the machine at which mixed materials are deposited upon a surface, suitable instrumentalities being likewise employed for maintaining the delivery end of the chute, variable by its lengthening or shortening, a uniform distance from the ground. It is necessary that the delivery end of the chute of the character set forth in said patent shall be kept at a predetermined distance from the ground in order to prevent the separation of the constituents of the mixed aggregates.
The present invention involves a construction of distributing chute designed primarily with a view to adapting the principle ofconstruction and operation of my patented chute in such a manner that a somewhat more simple controlling means is provided. This controlling means in the present invention is located at a point intermediate the ends of the chute, instead of at the mixer end as in my previously patented construction, and saidcontrolling means embodies a considerably more simple arrangement of devices by which the discharge point of the chute may be varied while maintained at the necessary predetermined distance from the surface to which the material is being delivered. The said particular arrangement of the controlling means on the chute is especially advantageous in that it is manually operable and can be manipulated to render any one of a number of sections of the chute a delivery member for the latter without requiring that the operator wade back and forth through the mixed material delivered to the surface on which the mixed materials are being laid.

been to provide peculiar connecting means between the various adjustable sections going to make up the chute structure whereby relative movement of said sections is limited when they are raised out of operative positions so that liability of sticking of the sections interfering with their free gravitative movement when lowered, is avoided.
The invention also involves details of construction of the controlling mechanism and chute parts, allof which will be presented fully in the aftergoing description and understood in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side view of a chute embodying the invention, the same being illustrated in supported relation with respect to a mixing machine which is only partially shown.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side view, partially broken away and shown in section, bringing out fully the construction and arrangement of the reverse delivery section of the chute.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken about on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side view, partially in section, bringing out more'clearly the control mechanism on the main section of the chute.

The portion of the mixer to which the chute of this invention is applied is designated A in the drawings and the chute is designated B and is supported on a bracket C carried by the frame of the mixer. The chute B is coupled to the bracket C by the vertical trunnion 1 carried by a bracket 2 to which the chute is directly pivoted at 3. The pivotal connection at 3 and the trunnion connection at I afford means permitting of vertical as well as horizontal movement of the chute in an obvious manner. The chute B comprises an inner main section 4 somewhat flattened, widened and rounded at its inner extremity to form a materials adapted to be delivered thereto .by means of a suitable delivery chute D provided for the drum of the mixer A.
Carried by the main section 4 of the chute B is the reverse delivery section 5 suitably pivoted at its sides as shown at 6 in Fig. 3 to opposite angular frame members 7 at the sides of the section 4. A handle 8 is connected through one of the pivots 6 with the chute 5 to turn the same from a position substantially parallel with but overlapping the main section 4 to a position inclining somewhat reversely to the direction of inclination of the chute B, under which conditions the section 5 forms a trap and reverse delivery member for the chute.
There is provided at the outer end of the main section 4 a plurality of sections 9 of any suitable number, which sections are pivotally connected together in a manner similar to the construction in my Letters Patent previously referred to, the sections 4 and 9 being provided at their outer ends and on the under sides thereof with stop flanges 10 limiting the downward relative pivotal movement of the sections and acting to limit the lowering movement of each section 9 as it moves downward to a position in substantial alinement with an adjacent section 9 and the section 4.
At the outer end portion of the main section 4 and adjacent to the reverse delivery section 5 are provided the supporting brackets 11 which carry a casing 12 partially inclosing certain control mechanism now to be set forth. Mounted on the brackets 11 is a Windlass shaft 13 one end of which has a handle 14 and on which shaft is fixed the drum 15. Secured at one end to' the drum 15 is a cable or equivalent connection 16 adapted to wind about the drum and passing over one of two sheaves 17 supported by a bracket at the upper portion of the frame of the mixing machine A. From the sheave 17 the cable 16 passes to a bail or other similar member 18 connecting it with the outer end of the outermost section 9 of the chute B.
A toothed locking wheel 19 fixed to the outer side of the drum 15 is cooperative with a dog 20 pivoted on one of the brackets 11 whereby to releasably lock the drum 15 and shaft 13 against movement in either direction. On the shaft 13 is carried a smaller drum 21 with which is connected a second chute raising and lowering cable 22. The cable 22 passes about the other of the two sheaves 17 above referred to and leads back to the shaft 13, as seen in Fig. 5', to which it is connected at a suitable point in such a manner that as the cable unwinds from the drum 21 it will wind upon the shaft 13, and vice versa.
The operating means for the chute B as above set forth is manually operable by means of the handle 14 in such a manner that turnin of the handle 14 in one direction will wind the cable 16 on the drum 15 and by raising one or more of the sections 9 of the chute B, the operative length of the said chute will be shortened and its delivery point correspondingly varied. To maintain the delivery point at the fixed or predetermined desirable and necessary distance from the surface to which the mixed materials are being delivered by the chute B the cable 22 acts simultaneously with the operation of the cable 16 so as to lower the main section 4 of the chute as well as any of the sections 9 which ma remain in alinement with the latter, all in a manner which will be fully understood in view of the disclosure of the same principle of action in my previously referred to Letters Patent. 0 viously the reverse operation of lowering one or more of the sections 9 causes a bodily elevation of the chute B.
It is contemplated that the pivot means intermediate the sections 4 and 9 shall comprise the pivot members 9 and 9" the body portions of which are in alinement while the pivot portion of the member 9 is deflected outwardly in such a manner as to form a shoulder 9 adapted to abut with the member 9 and thereby limit the extent of upward and inward movement of each section 9 to not more than degrees. This provision, as will be seen by reference to the dotted line arrangement of parts in Fig. 1, so positions any upraised section 9 that they will freely gravitate to either outward lowered positions without liability of sticking, as soon as the cable 16 is paid out for the above purposes.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In ;combination, a supporting structure, a delivery chute movably connected with the supporting structure and comprising a plurality of sections, a shaft mounted on one of the sections of the chute, means connected with the shaft, and with the supporting structure and connected with another of the sections of the chute for moving the latter to vary the discharge point of the chute, means operable from said shaft for moving the chute to maintain the discharge point thereof a uniform distance from the ground incident to the varying of the location of the discharge point by the previously mentioned means, and means for o eratin said shaft.

3. In combination, a supporting structure, a chute movably mounted thereon, means for lengthening and shortening said chute to vary the location of its discharge point, and at the same time maintaining the chute in a position at which the said discharge point will he a uniform distance from the ground, said means including a shaft mounted on the chute, a cable connected with said shaft and with the supporting structure and with the chute, and operable by the shaft to lengthen or shorten the chute, a second cable connected with said shaft and coiiperative with the supporting structure whereby to edect bodily movement of the chute as an incident to its lengthening and shortening by operation ofsaid shaft, and means for operating the shaft.
4. In combination, a supporting structure, a chute movably mounted thereon, means for lengthening and shortening said chute to vary the location of its discharge point, and at the same time maintaining the chute in a position at which the said discharge point will be a uniform distance from the ground, said means including a shaft mounted on the chute, a drum fixed to said shaft, a cable connected with said drum to wind and unwind relative thereto, said cable having connection with the supporting structure and also connected with the chute so as to lengthen and shorten the latter on operation of the drum by said shaft, a second drum on said shaft, a second cable adapted to wind and unwind with respect to the last named drum and having operative connection with the supporting structure and with the chute whereby to move the latter bodily simultaneously with the lengthening and shortening action of the same, a handle for operation of said shaft, and means for locking the shaft in predetermined positions.
5. In combination, a supporting structure, a chute movably mounted thereon and comprising a main section connected at one end with the supporting structure, a plurality of sections pivotally connected with each other'and the innermost of which is pivotally connected with the main section, a Windlass shaft mounted on the main section adjacent to its outer end, a drum on said shaft, a cable adapted to wind and unwind with respect to said drum, and connected with the outermost section of the chute, a sheave on the supporting structure about which said cable passes, a second sheave on the supporting structure, a second cable adapted to wind about said shaft in one direction and passing around the second sheave aforesaid back to the shaft with which it is again connected and adapted to wind in an opposite direction from that just mentioned, a handle for the shaft, and re leasable means for locking the shaft against movement.
6. In combination, a supporting structure, an extensible chute mounted thereon, an operating device having connection with the supporting structure and carried by the chute for lengthening and shortening the latter whereby to vary its point of discharge, and an instrlnnentality also operable by said device to adjust the parts of the chute to maintain the said discharge point a uniform distance from the ground.
