TABLE ATTACHMENT FOR, BEDS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 3, 1217.
Application filed July '7, 1914. Serial No. 849,593.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, CHARLES DBESEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Table Attachments for Beds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable other skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
This invention relates to improvements in bed attachments, and particularly to table attachments for beds.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a table attachment for a bed which can be readily folded and disposed under the bed out of the way, the device remaining attached to the side rail of the bed.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction and which will properly support a tray over a bed within convenient reach of the patient.
Other objects and advantages will be ap parent from the following description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a bed showing my invention applied thereto and in extended position.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device, only a fragment of the bed being shown.
Fig; 3 is a view taken from the same direction as Fig. 2, but showing the device in folded position.
Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the device of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a view taken from the same direction as Fig. 1' showing device in folded position.
Fig. 6 is an elevation of the device in extended position taken from the opposite side to that shown in Fig. 1.
Referring particularly to the accompany-- ing drawings, 10 represents a recessed L- shaped member which is arranged to be engaged with a portion of the side rail of an iron bed. Disposed against the outside of the side rail is a standard 11 which carries a pair of set screws 12 which are arranged to draw the member. 10 tightly into engagement with the rail. The upper end of the standard 11 is bifurcated and has pivotally against which the arm 13 engages when the device is in extended position. The lower side of the inner end of the leaf 14 carries a block 18 against which the upper end of the arm 13 engages so that the said leaf will be held in a horizontal position.
Carried by the arm 17 and by the block 18 are set screws 19 which are arranged to be moved against the arm 13 so as to properly adjust the arm to bring the leaf 14: into a perfectly horizontal position. Through the outer end portion of the leaf 14 is a set screw 20 which engages against the under face of the member 15 to properly level the table 16.
Thus when the device is in extended position, as clearly seen in Fig. 2, the table 16 will be disposed over the bed in proper position for the patient to reach the tray carried thereby. When the device is to be put out of use, the leaf 14 is swung over toward the arm 18 and then the arm 13 swung down against the outer face of the standard 11. This will cause the leaf 1& to swing under the bed, and to hold the leaf in this position against dropping to the floor, there is provided a spring hook or latch 21 on the lower end of the standard, this latch being engaged with the leaf 1 1 as clearly shown. When so folded the table 16 and member 15 may be swung so as to dispose the table downwardly toward the floor.
It will be noted that the standard 11 re mains attached to the rail of the bed, and to throw the device into operative position, it is only necessary to disengage the latch and swing the parts up into the position of Fig. 2.
What is claimed is:
A table attachment for a bed comprising a rail clamping means including a standard, an arm pivotally mounted in the upper end of the standard, adjustable means carried by the standard and engaging the arm for varying the inclination of the arm, a leaf pivot ally carried by the upper end of the arm and Q 7 V i 7 1,221,290
disposed normally in a horizontal position gagement with the said leaf when the latter 10 over the bed, adjustable means" carried by is in its lowered position.
