NECKTIE.
Application filed November 20, 1914..
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, .VILLL-itr A. Knrs, a citizen of the United Ftates, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neckties, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to neckties of the type provided with tabs for attaching the tie to the front collar-button of the wearer so as to prevent the tie from becoming displaced in use and to facilitate tying. In neckties of this class it is usual to provide a separate sized tie for each sized collar. It has been found that sometimes in the cutting of ties, there may occur errors so that a tie will not always be easily adjusted or easily attached to the collar-bu ton of the wearer by reason of the fact that the space between the extreme points of the button-hole in the tab may not correspond with the size of the collar being worn, or the necktie material may shrink a little when being laundried or in the course of manufacture. It is to overcome these objections and to facilitate the attaching of the tabs to the front collarbutton of the wearer that my invention is addressed.
In the drawings in which like letters represent like parts Figure 1 shows the face or the under side of a tie embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a portion of one end of Fig. 1 showing parts in dotted lines;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross-sectional view 7 of Fig. 2 on the line XX;
Fig. 5 is a view of one end of the tie with the tab folded back; and
Fig. 6 is a modification.
In the drawings, AA are the paddles or tying ends of a bow-tie. Tab-ties are generally of the bow-tie form, although my invention is applicable to other forms of neckwear, if desired. B is the connecting portion or neckband, and CC are the tabs provided with button-holes D adapted to engage with the front collar-button of the wearer. E is the button-hole in the rear of the neckband adapted to engage with the rear collar-button.
In the preferred form of my invention, I make the tabs CC integral with the inner face of the tie, or a portion thereof, by inner face, meaning that portion of the tie which Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 873,138.
is visible when the tie is turned over, or that portion of the tie which is adjacent to the wearer when the tie is in position for tying. In the preferred form of the invention, the tabs C@ are integral with the inner face of the tying ends, as shown in Fig. 5. It will be readily understood by an inspection of F i-g. 5 that the material may be folded upon itself so as to form the tabs C, as is more clearly shown in cross-section in Fig. 3, in which the two folds of the material forming the tab have been marked F and G. The free end of the material forming the tab which I have marked H in Fig. 3 is attached by a row of stitching L to a strip J of elastic fabric. This elastic fabric is at a suitable point attached to the material forming the inner face of the intermediate or neckband portion of the tie. which, for clearness, T have marked 0 in Fig. 3.
It will be noted that the material 0 form ing the inner face of the intermediate or neckband portion is near its ends, in the preferred form of my invention, folded upon itself at Q, forming the two plies I and O. The elastic J is secured to the two plies I and O by a row of stitching K. All of the plies of the material of the necktie are secured together by longitudinal rows of stitching NN, as shown in Fig. 4, in the ordinary way.
In a necktie as constructed as above described with the tabs integral with the inner face of the tying ends and the free end of the tab attached to the elastic strip J, a limited movement of the tabs in opposite directions is afforded so that after one tab has been secured in place, the other tab may easily be secured to the collar-button by slightly pulling the same. The distance which a tab may be stretched may be easily regulated by the length of the elastic fabric. In the preferred form of my invention, by reason of the tab being integral with the inner face of the tie and the longitudinal edges of the fabrics forming the tie and tabs being secured along their edges by the rows of stitching NN, the stretch of the tabs is limited, but a suflicient stretch is permitted to facilitate and make it easy to attach the tie, by reason of the fact that the inner ply of the material, which normally lies close against the outer ply of the ma terial of the tie, when stretched tends to separate from same and thus allows the tab to become extended. When the tab is re leased the elastic tends to draw the tab back to its normal position so that the tie will not be destroyed in any way.
In Fig.- 6 I have shown a modification of my invention in which the tab is not integral with any part of the tie, and in which it is not securedalong the edges of the tie by the rows of stitching NN, but is a separate tab made of suitable material secured to the elastic fabric by the row of stitching L, the elastic fabric, in turn, being secured within the pocket by the row of stitching K.
It will readily be seen that a tie constructed in accordance with the foregoing will not be unsightly, no elastic webbing will be visible, either when in use, or when exposed for sale by the dealer, and by reason of the elastic fabric, the tabs will easily be attached to the collar-button of the wearer.
If the wearer desires, the tab may be folded back, as shown in Fig. 5, and placed within the pocket, but, of course, this would only be done where it was not desired to attach it to the collar-button, as, for instance, when twofold or high-band collars are worn with a tie having tabs.
Modifications and changes may be made by one skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a necktie provided with tabs adapted to be attached to a collar-button, said tabs being integral with the inner face of the tying ends of the tie, an intermediate portion of one faceof said tie being of a separate piece of material, elastic means attaching the said intermediate portion to the tabs, substantially as set forth.
2. In a necktie provided with tabs adapted to be attached to a collar-button, said tabs being integral with a portion of themner face of the tie and an intermediate portion of the inner face of said tie being'folded upon itself to'form pockets for a portion of said tabs, strips of elastic fabric secured to said tabs to permit extension thereof, substantially as set forth.
3. In a necktie provided with a tab adapted to be attached to a front collar-button, said tab being of material separate from an intermediate portion of the tie but in tegral with the material forming the inner face of the tying-end of the tie.
4:. In a necktie provided with a tab adapted to be attached to a front collar-button, said tab being provided with a portion in tegral with the material forming the inner' face of the tying end of the tie, and a pocket on the inner face of the tie, the end of the material forming the outer face of the tab being located within said pocket.
In a necktie provided with tabs adapted to be attached to the front collar-button, an intermediate portion of one face of said tie being at its ends folded upon itself to form a pocket, said tabs being connected within said pocket.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
