To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. Srnnninn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful improvements in Holders for Calendar-Pads and the like, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in holders for calendar pads and the like and has for its object to provide a holder which, by reason of its construction, may be made of exceedingly light sheet material, preferably metal7 and yet be substantial and neat in appearance and inexpensive to manufacture.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly7 pointed out in the claims.
-Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of a holder embodying myinvention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation ofthe same illustrating a calendar pad attached thereto, portions of the leaves of said pad being shown supported by the base while other portions thereof are shown supported against the back of said holder. Fig. Sis a section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig.` 2 illustrating the manner in which the leaf guiding members interlock and are detachably secured to the base. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation ofthe holder illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, portions of the base thereof being broken away and shown in section to more clearly illustrate the manner in which tl, supporting members for the back interlock with said base. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a modified form of holder.
In the drawings, 6 is a base formed from sheet material, preferably metal, and substantially rectangular in form. r1`he rear portion of said base is bent at 7 downwardly and slightly rounded atthe end as at 8 to position and to maintain the body portion of said base inclined. AV back 9 also formed of material similar to said base is mounted upon said base and at an angle thereto, said base and said back being constructed and arranged to support a calendar pad 10.
The back 9 is preferably fastened to .said
base by means consisting of a tongue 11 formed at the lower end of said back and being constructed and arranged to fit a perforation or slot 12 provided in said base adjacent the rear end thereof and extending transversely of said rear end. Means have been provided on said tongue 11 to lock said tongue within said slot. These means are formed by cutting inwardly from opposite sides of said tongue at 13, 13 to form par-- tially detached portions of material 1a, 14,
thereof, thus partially detaching portions of said material; These partially detached portions are then bent forwardly as at 16, thence downwardly at 17 and interlock with said base at the lower extremities thereof, said cmembers passing through perforations in lsaid calendar pad.
rThe leaf guiding members 15 preferably detachably interlock with the base within slots 1S, said slots being of a length suflicient to permit said guiding members to be inserted.therein,but slightly nearer together than are said guiding members thus necessitating the contracting of the lower ends of said guiding members during such an insertion. The lower ends of said guiding members are provided with incisions 19 eX- tending from opposite outer edges inwardly for a portion of the width of said members. These incisions permit the guiding members to expand to their normal positions when` said incisions aline with the material at the outer ends of the slots 18.
The back 9 is provided with supporting members Y 20, preferably two in number. These members are formed integral with said back and in a manner similar to that in which the guiding members 15 are formed, that is, by partially detaching portions of the material from which the back is constructed. Said supporting members 20 are bent rearwardly from said back and downward to the base 6 adjacent the bend 7 where they interlock with said base, said supporting members having incisions 21 extending from the inner edges thereof outwardly transversely of said members for a portion of the width thereof. The base 6 is also provided with incisions or cuts 22 which are adapted to receive the ports for said base intermediate the opposite ends thereof. By reason of so many supports therefor the material from which said base is constructed may be very much thinner than that which is usually employed for calendar pad holders constructed of sheet material. The base G is also ribbed longitudinally as at 27, 27 to provide reinforcements therefor.
Another support for the base 6 may be provided, if desired, to be used either with or without the extension of the supporting members 2() and consists in extending the tongue l1 downwardly as at 29 into engagement with the surface upon which the pad holder is resting. rlhis extension may be widened, if desired, as shown in dotted lines Fig. 4 to provide a firmer and more stable support for the base beneath the pad 10. The invention however is not limited to the use of all of the supports for the base referred to, but any of them may be eliminated without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
It will also be evident that by providing the supports 20, leaf guiding members 15, and extending the back to and into interlocking engagement with the base, the back will be rigidly supported Valso permitting very light metal to be used in forming the back without endangering the substantiality of the holder.
Fig. 5 illustrates a modiiied form of holder. In this form the back 9 is constructed substantially as illustrated in Figs. l, 2, 3 and fl. The supportin g members 20 are however bent at 28 rearwardly extending beyond the upper end of the back 9, thus providing a support for the Vupper or rear end of the base 6. The downwardly projecting portion at the rear of the base constituting a support therefor, illustrated in Figs. l and 2, is eliminated from the base illustrated in Fig. 5 and the material constituting said base terminates immediately at the rear of the interlocking point between said supports 20 and said base. The holder when constructed of very light material, as described, may be shipped flat with the pad 10 and erected by the purchaser or the recipient thereof. Y
When it is desired to replace the calendar, which is on the holder, by a new one, the lower extremities ofthe leaf guiding members 15 are contracted and withdrawn from the slots 18, then bent upwardly clear of the base sufficiently to permit the leaves of the pad to be removed therefrom and a new pad is then slipped on to said guiding members and said members inserted in the slots 1S and permitted to expand and interlock with the base.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire by LettersPatent toV secure is:
l. A device of the class described having, in combination, a base, a back connected with and disposed at an angle to said base, a support for said back extending therefrom rearwardly into engagement with said base, and leaf guiding means extending' from said back forwardly into engagement with said base.
A device of the class described having, in combination, a base provided with a perforation adjacent one end thereof, a back constructed of sheet material and arranged to iit'said perforation, a portion of said back being bent to secure said back within said perforation, means on said back extending through said base and constituting a support therefor, and leaf guiding means extending from said back to said base.
3. A device of the class described having, in combination, a base formed of sheet material and provided with a perforation, a4
back also formed of sheet material and provided with a tongue adapted to project through said perforation, means on said tongue constructed and arranged to be bent laterally relatively thereto to secure said tongue within said perforation, and leaf guiding means formed integral with said back by partially detaching portions of the material thereof, said leaf guiding means being constructed and arranged to interlock with said base.
Il. A device of the class described having, in combination, a base formed from sheet material, a back also formed from sheet material and constructed and arranged to interlock with said base, a pair of supporting members for said back, said supporting members being formed integral with said back and adapted to interlock with said base at the rear of the interlocking point of said base and said back, and leaf guiding means formed integral with said back and constructed and arranged to interlock with said base at a point in front of said back.

and a pair of supporting members formed integral with said back and adapted to interlock with said base at the rear of said back, said supporting members being constructed and arranged to support said base.
6. A device of the class described having, in combination, a base formed from sheet material, a portion of said material being bent downwardly at the rear of said base to form a support therefor, a back also formed of sheet material and interlocking with said base, a pair of resilient leaf guiding members formed integral with said back and extending forwardly therefrom into detachable engagement with said base, and a pair of supporting members formed integral with said back and extending therefrom rearwardly, said base having transversely disposed incisions adapted to receive and interlock with said supporting members, said supporting members being also arranged to support the rear end of said base.
7. A device of the class described having, in combination, a base having supports at opposite ends, said base being provided with a perforation intermediate said ends, a back provided with a tongue adapted to project through said perforation downwardly and terminating substantially in alinement with the extremities of the supports at opposite ends of said base, said extension also constituting a support for said base, and leaf guiding means extending from said back to said base.
8. A device of the class described having, in combination, a base having ,supports at opposite ends, said base also being provided with a perforation intermediate said ends, a back provided with a tongue adapted to project through said perforation downwardly and terminating substantially in alinement with the extremities of the supports at opposite ends of said base, said extension also constituting a support for said base, means on said tongue adapted to secure said tongue within said perforation, and leaf guiding means extending from said back to said base.
