Description
UNITED STATES PATENT GEEICE.
WINFIELD S. HAWES, OF ANACONDA, MONTANA.
BOX-LID SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 619,826, dated February 21, 1899.
Application led September 29, 1897. Serial No. 653,513. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WIVNEIELD S. HAwEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anaconda, in the countyof Deer Lodge and State of Montana, have invented a new and useful Box-Lid Support, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to box-lid supports and price-tag holders, its object being to provide a simple device of this character made from a single piece of sheet metal so shaped and bent that it can be detachably fitted over the edge of one end of the -box and the corresponding edge of the box-lid to support the latter in an open position at any desired angle and at the same time form a suitable holder for the price-tag.
With this object in view the invention consists of the several details of construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly'pointed out in the claims. l
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a cigar-box, showing my improved lid-support and price-tag holder in position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the lidsupport and tag-holder detached. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the lid-support and tag-holder before being bent to form, the lines on which it is to be bent being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 4t is a vertical section through the end of the box and the clip.
Similar reference-numerals indicate similarl parts in the several figures.
The cigar-box is indicated by 1, and its lid by 2. The blank from which the lid-support and tag-holder are formed is shown in Fig. 3 cut to the proper shape, but unbent, and it may be made of any suitable sheet metal, preferably spring metal, and is intended to be bent on the dotted line a a to bring the parts on each side of the line at a right angle to each other. The part of which the tag-holder is formed is indicated by 3 and that from which the clip, to t over the edge of the end of the box, is formed is indicated by 4. A U shaped cut 5 is made in the tag-holder to form a tongue 6, which is bent outwardly and then forwardly to leave a space between it and the rear face of the tag-holder sufficient to permit the box-lid to it between them, and preferably the outer end of the tongue will 'be Acurved outwardly, as indicated at 7, to permit the tongue and the tag-holder to be slipped over the edge of the lid more readily. A series of lugs 8 project from opposite edges of vthe tag-holder and are intended to be bent enable the other portion 3 to be bent at right Y angles to the clip. The part 10 of the .clip which engagesA the inner face of the box is formed with two tongues 11, the ends of which are preferably curved outwardly, as indicated at 12. Each tongue is provided with one or more resilient teeth 13, which are struck up from the bodyportion of the metal in such manner as to bite into the end of the box and prevent accidental upward movement of the clip. By grasping the outwardly-curved ends of the tongues they can be sprung away sufficiently to disengage the teeth from the end of the box and permit the clip to be easily removed therefrom.
That part of the tongue 6 which extends across the edge of the lid will preferably be perforated, as indicated at 14, for the reception of a brad, the object of which is to hold the clip in position and afford an additional support for the lid. The brad which is usually employed to secure the front edge of the lid to the box may be utilized forthis purpose.
As shown in full lines in Fig. 1, the box-lid is held in a vertical position at substantially a right angle to the ends of the box; but should it be desired to support the lid at a different angle the clip can be tilted upwardly at its forward end, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
While I'have described my invention as applied to a cigar-box, it is obvious that it could be used equally well with boxes containing other kinds of merchandise, and -it is to be understood that changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construc-= ICO tion may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is l. A combined box-lid and tag-holder comprising a clip U-shaped in cross-section and provided at one side with integral tongues having resilient teeth struck up from the body portion of the metal and extending i11- ward, and a tag-holder connected with the clip and arranged at right angles to the same, said tag-holder being provided with a tongue for engaging the lid of a box, substantially as described.
2. A combined box-lid and tag-holder constructed of a single piece of sheet metal provided near its center with a transverse cut and having the portion at one side of the cut folded longitudinally to form a U-shaped clip, the portion at the other side of the cut being bent at right angles, and having upper and lower tag-supporting lugs, and provided between its upper and lower edges with a tongue struck up from the sheet metal and arranged to engage the lid of a box, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
