In road graders, as heretofore constructed, it was impossible to adjust the blade to perform all of the operations necessary. and for this reason a series of machines was required to properly'level, ditch and bank the road". The ordinary scraper for instance was capable of cutting or scraping off more or less of the surface of the road in a flat plane and its blade wasiiu some instances laterally as well as vertically adjustable. Again in forming the ditch or trench at the sides of the road a low was the usual instrumentality employe andhn bankin up the road still another arrangement 0 scraper was used toaccomplish this 1 result.

In carrying out my invention, the frame or body which connects the rear and front axles of the machine together is supported by the rear axle so as to have a vertical and a lateral adjustment with respect to said axle and the rear of said frame is pro-' vided with a ring supported in a circular vertically disposed bearing and with means for swinging the frame completely around in said caring. The frame also carries in planes at right angles to each between its ends a circular bearing supporting a ring carryin the scraper blade and sa1d ring 1s provide with means whereby the blade may be completely revolved ifn said bearing in a plane parallel with the rame.
My invention broadly considered has for its principal object the provision of means for adjusting the blade in circular planes, one revolving about the longitudinal axis of the machine and the other revolving about the vertical axis of the frame.
Subsidiary objects of my invention are to various adjustments of the blade incircular planes and of the frame in vertical and lateral straight planes. I

ing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which, Figure 1, is a side elevatlonal vlewv of a' rovide means for properly securing the I road grader embodying mainfeatures of my invention. Fig. 2,- is a top or plan view thereof,'- and Fig. 3, is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line a, a of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the front and 2 therear axle of the machine.
These axles 1 and 2 form the support for the body of the machine, said body comprising the two side rails 3 converging toward the front axle 1, a front bearing 4 turning on a pin or shaft 5 carried byaxle 1 anda rear ling-shaped, vertically disposed, frame 6 turning on an annular bearing 7 supported by the rear axle 2.
The annular bearing 7 is carried by a box like frame work arranged to shift laterally along the rear axle 2-. The axle 2 for this purpose is formed preferably square in cross section and is hollow and provided with a top andbotto'm slot '8. In the hollow shaft or axle 2 are adapted to slide the block or blocks 9 traversed by screw threaded shafts 10. The annular bearing 7, 1s carriedby a plate '11 of rectangular shape, and the plate 11 is supported by the end yokes 12. The yokes 12 are loosely traversed by the shafts 10' and when shafts 10 are turned 1n either direction in the blocks 9 the yokes 12 and plate 11 with the bearing 7 are elevated or depressed vertically with respect to rear axle 2. To secure this movement to shafts 10, each shaft is provided at its top with a miter gear 13 meshing with similar gears 14 carried by horizontally arranged shaft 15. The shaft 15 turns in bearings 16 formed on' the top of plate 11 and is operated by hand wheel 17 at one side of the machine.
The plate 11 and auxiliaries are also adapted to be shifted laterally along the the yokes may slide vertically and each arm 16 at its free end is in screw threaded engagement as at 17 with a horizontally arranged threaded shaft 18 turning in bearings 19 supported by the rear axle 2 at or near the extremities of said axle. A ratchet 20 and lever 21 serve to operate the shaft 18 to thereby cause the yokes 12, plate 11, vertical shafts 10 and blocks 9 to slide horizontally on the rear axle, the blocks 9 constituting the bearings within the hollow axle 2 for the entire structure.
To secure rotary movement of the ring shaped frame 6 and to thereby turn the body of the grader about 'the longitudinal axis of the machine, there is formed on the periphery of said frame 6, a series of gear teeth 22 meshing with a cog wheel 23 carried by a short shaft 24 traversing and supported to turn in plate 11 and its necessary parts. A- hand Wheel 25 on shaft 24 gives "required control of the movement to said 4 shaft.
As a preferred means of properly supporting the frame 6 upon bearing 7, the bearing has a-forwardly and upwardly projecting flange7 upon its periphery and be hind this flange 7 the frame 6 is arranged to revolve. The rear of bearing 7 is secured to plate 11 by means of bolts or screws 7 to thereby .lock the frame 6 between the plate 11 and flange 7. The periphery of bearing 7, the inner edge of flange 7* and the face of plate 11 thus constitute the bearings for guiding the frame 6 in its circular or rotary movement. To strengthen the body of the vehicle at the rear end, straps 26 are extended from the frame 6 to the side rails 3.
Intermediate of their ends the side rails 3 support an. annulus or circular plate 27 constituting a bearing block of preferred tubular or cylindrical form having at its lower periphery a flange 28. The flange 28 forms a portion of the bearing and also a support for a ring 29 having its upper periphery' provided with gear teeth 30. The ring 29 constitutes the support for the grading or scraping blade 31 of the machine, said blade 31 being united preferably to the under face of ring 29 by means of straps 32.
The tubular bearing block 27 is secured to the side rails 3 by means of the curved straps 33 and 34. To operate the crown gear ring 29 a longitudinally arranged shaft. 35 having a bearing in the strap 33 and a bearing 36 within the frame 6 is provided, at one end, with a miter gear 37 meshing with the cal plane from the body or with the blade projecting in circular planes when the body is turned in its vertical rotary bearing 7 at the rear axle, or with the blade projecting at varying angles to the longitudinal axis of the machine when its supporting ring 29 is turned in the body. Any portion of the body of the blade 31 may be presented to the ground, a corner (rear or front) only may be operatively employed; all or a portion of its lower edge may be presented to the surface and the angle which this edge makes with the road may vary from zero to 90 degrees or beyond. For ditch digging or for embankment, for plane grading or in fact for any required manipulation or operation there is in the machine the means for the necessary adjustment of the blade.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
1. In a road grader, a frame connecting the front and rear axles of the machine, an annular bearing supported by the rear axle, a ring shaped vertically disposed frame forming the rear end of the machine frame and supported to turn on the said annular bearing,'and a means supported by the rear axle and arranged to turn the ring shaped frame on said annular bearing.
2. In a road grader, a frame connecting the front and rear axles of the machine, an annular bearing supported by the rear axle, a ring shaped vertically disposed frame forming the rear end of the machine frame and supported to turn on the said annular bearing, and a means supported by the rear axle and arranged to turn the ring shaped frame on said annular bearing, combined with a scraper blade supported by the machine frame and arranged to revolve therein. a shaft traversing the annular bearing and arranged to turn the scraper blade and a manual means for turning said shaft, said manual means arranged within the annular bearing.
I 3. In a road grader, a frame connecting the front and rear axles of the machine, an
. bearing, and a means supported by therear axle and arranged to turn the ring shaped frame on said annular bearing, combined with means for raising and lowering said annular bearing, the ring shaped frame and the means for turning said ring shaped frame, said raising and lowering means supported by the rear axle.
4. In a road grader, a frame connecting the front and rear axles of the machine, an
annular bearing supported by the rear axle, a ring shaped vertically disposed frame forming the rear end of the machine frame and supported to turn on the said annular bearing, and a means supported by the rear axle and arranged to turn the ring shaped frame on said annular bearing, combined- With means for shifting the annular bearing and ring shaped frame laterally of the rear axle, said shifting means supported by said axle.
5. In a road grader, a rear axle, a box like frame work arranged to shift laterally along the axle, an annular bearing supported by said frame work, a frame having a ring shaped rear end supported to turn on the annular bearing, and a scraper carried I by said frame, combined with means traversing the box like frame work and supported therein, said means arranged to turn said ring shaped rear end of said scraperframe on said annular bearing. v
6. In a road grader, a rear axle, a box like frame work mounted to shift laterally upon the axle, an annular bearing carried by the frame work, and a scraper-frame supported to turn at one end on said bearing, combined with means traversing the box like frame work and axle and arranged to raise,
and lower the frame work on said axle.
