To all whom it may concern: I
I, FRANKLI E. ARNDT, a citizen of the United States, Galion, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and use- Be it known that residing at ful Improvements in Road Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in reversible road machines or graders and relates particularly to the operating means for what is known in the-artas a circle,which is suspended by the draw bars of the machine and which in turn supports the mold board andblade, the circle being mounted for a rotary movement whereby the blade may be"reversed and held at an desired angle to the line of draft.
The present invention has for its primary object a simple, strong, durable and efiicient construction and arrangement of parts whereby the circle may be easily turned as required through the instrumentality of a flexible shaft under the control of the operator on the platform .of the machine.
\Vith this and other objects in view, as will more'fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter more fully describe andclaim.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the side bars or sills of the wheeled framework of a road machine, 2 designates the draw bars which are suspended by the framework, 3 designates the platform upon which the operator stands to control and adjust the machine, and 4 designates as a whole the rotatably mounted circle the operating mechanism for which s Arns r rEn or Specification of Letters Patent.

The outer edges of the segments 9 are toothed, as indicated at 12, for engagement by a worm 13 which is carriedby a transversely extending shaft 1 1 journaled in a casting 15 which not onlys erves as a support for the shaft, but as a brace for the draw bars 2. The shaft 1 1 is provided at one end with a bevel pinion 15 which meshes with a corresponding pinion 16 on a flexible ingflange of said ring by bolts 11 or similar operating shaft 17, said shaft being formed in two sections connected by a universal joint 18 and the rearmost section extending upwardly and rearwardly toward and'above the platform 3, where it is provided at its rear end with a hand wheel 19 whereby it may be easily operated. The'foremost section of the flexible operating shaft 17 ex tends through and is supported by an apertured bracket 20, secured to one of the sills or side bars 1 of the framework, this bracket being secured to the sill on the side thereof which is opposite to the casting and the shaft let extending through said bracket 20, whereby an additional bearin support for. the shaft l-l is provided.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, the operation and advantages of my improved circle and operating means therefor will be apparent. In the practical use of the device, the operator standing on the platform 3, may easily 7 adjust the mold board and its blade by turning the'fiexible operating shaft 17 in one direction or the reverse, the motion being transmitted from said shaft through the bevel pinions 16 and 15 and through'theshaft1i, worm'l3 and the circle 4. It will also be seen that the circle itself is of very simple, durable and strong construction. The splice bars and body ring sections may be easily made of wrought steel and the segments of malleable steel, and the parts may be very readily secured together in assembled relation to form the complete circle.
lVhilethe accompanying drawing illustrates what I believe to be the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto but that various changes may be made in the construction, arrangements and proportions of the parts without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim,

In a road machine, the combination With the draw bars thereof and a revoluble circle supported thereby, said circle being provided with a toothed rack, of a brace secured to said draw bars and extending trans versely from one draw bar to the other, a transverse shaft journaled in said brace and provided intermediate of its ends with a worm meshing with said .rack between said draw bars, the shaft being provided at one end outside of the adjacent draw bar with a bevel pinion, a sectional flexible operating shaft extending longitudinally of the machine toward the rear thereof outside of the draw bars,a pinion on the forward end of said flexible operating shaft meshing with the first-named pinion, and a bracket secured tothe outerside of one of said draw bars, the transverse shaft and the foremost section of the operating shaft extending through and having bearings in said bracket.
