COPYING nnvrcn.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 16, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEO GRUBMIAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Copying Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to devices for copying drawings and has reference more particularly to a device for producing copies of drawings or sketches by reflecting the said sketches or drawings through a transparent colored medium on to matter on which the copy is to be formed.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple, convenient and inexpensive device which will reflect clearly the sketch or drawing to be copied.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device which is in the shape of a portfolio and in which the reflecting medium is maintained in the proper position automatically.
With the above and other objects in View, the nature of which will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of the application, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof showing the support for the transparent medium in full line slightly withdrawn, and in dotted lines nearly folded against the transparent medium before the portfolio is closed. Fig. 3 shows the device closed; Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4, Fig. 3-, and Fig. 5 is a diagrammatic view of a modified structure of my device.
Referring to the drawings, 5 represents a folder the sides of which are stiffened by securing to the folder pads 6 spaced from each other by the fold in the folder and which pads are provided with corners 7 for engaging paper. Secured to the folder and mounted to fold between the pads is a transparent colored medium 8; preferably a suitably colored pane of glass is used. To maintain the transparent colored medium erect when the folder is open, a foldable support 9 is provided. The said support is connected to the transparent medium so as to fold, preferably to one side thereof. The support 9 is also provided with a foldable tongue 10 which is made to fit between the folder and one of the pads 6. lVhen the tongue is so engaged, the transparent colored medium 8 will be in an erect position. To close the folder. the tongue 10 must be disengaged from the pad and folder and folded against the support and the support moved against the transparent medium, when the folder can be closed by either moving the folder toward the transparent medium or the transparent medium toward either of the pads and covering the same with the other pad. To form a perfect closure the folder 5 is provided with a folda-ble extension 11 adapted to overlap the other end of the folder when the same is closed. The said extension 11 is provided with a tongue 12 adapted to engage a slit 13 formed in the folder, whereby said folder is prevented from accidental unfolding. The said matter to be copied may be placed on either of the pads 6, but preferably it is placed on the pad 6 which is engaged with the support 9. The other pad receives the matter on which the copy is to be produced. The light is made to strike the side of the transparent colored medium which faces the subject matter to be copied. Particular attention is called to the fact that by the use of a colored medium the clearness of the subject matter to be copied is greatly increased as compared with an ordinary colorless transparent medium.
In Fig. 5 a modified structure is shown, in which the transparent medium is connected to the ends of the folder or the pads remote from the transparent medium by flexible members 14 which will automatically erect the transparent medium when the folder is unfolded. It is self-evident that the transparent medium will automatically fold into the folder when the folder is closed.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantage of the construction and operation of the device shown will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention pertains, and while I have described the principle of operation, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I
desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A support and a colored transparent medium adapted to be held at right angles to said support, said support being adapted to receive upon one side of said medium the object to be copied and upon the other side of said medium the material upon which the copy is to be made.
2. In a copying device of the class described, a folder, pads reinforcing the sides of said folder, a transparent medium foldably mounted between the pads on said folder, and means for maintaining said transparent medium erect when said folder is unfolded, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In 3. copying device of the class described, a folder, pads reinforcing the sides of the folder, a transparent medium foldably secured to said folder between said pads, a support in foldable connection with said transparent medium, and a foldable tongue on said support adapted to engage between said folder and one of the pads whereby the transparent medium is maintained in upright position with reference to said folder when the same is open, said folder having means for preventing an accidental folding of said folder when the same is unfolded.
4. In a copying device of the class described, a foldable support, a transparent medium foldably mounted in the fold of the support, and means having a portion engageable between the support and one of said pads for maintaining said transparent medium in erect position when said support is unfolded.
5. In a copying device of the class described, a foldable support, a transparent medium, foldable means between said transparent medium and said foldable support and foldable along the side thereof or movcopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. 0.
