The invention comprises the novel'construction and arrangement of the gas burner in a fiueless portion of the stove wall; further the means for directing and distributing the heated gases therefrom; further the construction of automatic dampers for venting the oven when the gas burner is in use and closing said vents when not in use; and further in various structural features as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional plan view of the stove; Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section thereof; and Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the rear portion of the stove.
A is a cook stove of usual construction grovided with a fire-box B, oven C and fines E F and G, respectively extending across the top of the oven, down the end beneath the bottom and upward at the rear. It is usual in the construction of such stoves to have the rear flue G of less width than the rear wall of the oven, and it is also usual to provide the rearwall of the oven with a rearward swell to increase the capacity of the oven. This swell or rearward extension is beyond the vertical plane of the rear wall of the bottom flue, while it is inside the plane of the front wall of the rear flue.
It is the primary object of the present invention to so dispose the gas burner that it will not interfere with the transference of heat from the fiues to the oven and at the same time will be effective for heating the oven. This I have accomplished by placing the burner Hin the swell or rearward extension I of the oven rear wall. In this way obstruction of heat from the bottom flue to the Specification of Letters Patent.

The burner H is introduced into this portion through an aperture J at one edge of the swell, and the jets of the burner are directed forward or toward the oven front, the plane of the burner being but slightly above the plane of the oven bottom. One objection to such an arrangement is that the flame from the burner is directed toward the front so that upon opening the oven door the-heated gases would be deflected outward. This objection I overcome by placing a removable false bottom K above the oven bottom and burner H, and providing this removable false bottom with a downwardly-extending front flange L, which closes the space therebeneath. I also preferably provide downwardly extending deflector ribs M M, which are inclined to contract the path of the gases from the burner as they bridge the front, and to permit the lateral deflection of said gases beyond the ends of said ribs to the oven sides. A series of apertures N or other cut-away portions of the deflector A will then permit the gaseous products to rise and pass through the bodyportion of the oven.
To support combustion air must be admitted to the gas burner, and the products of combustion must be carried off. The admission of air may be provided by a series of apertures 0 along that portion of the swell I in the oven rear wall which is not covered by the rear flue G, and the exit of the products of combustion may be through a port P from the top ofthe oven into said rear flue. When the gaseous fuel is not used, it is desirable to close the vents by dampers Q, and R, and as these are both adjacent to the rear wall of the oven they may be readily connected by means such as S, so that the actuation of one will also effect that of the other. Thus the construction is one in which the presence of the gas burner does not interfere with the heating of the oven from gases passing through the flues, and it is also one permitting a simple construction of vent controlling dampers and an effective arrangement for distributing the heated gases from the burner.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a cook stove, the combination with an 7 gas burner located oven provided with top, end, bottom and rear flues, of a rear wall for said ovenhaving a swell or rearward extension beyond the bottom flue and in front of the rear flue, and a in said swell or rearward extension. 7 r

In a cook stove, the combination with an oven provided with top, end,-bottom and rear lines, of a rear wall for said oven hav ing a swell or rearward extension therein beyond said bottom flue and in front of said rear flue, a burner extending horizontally in said swell or rearward extension above the plane of the oven bottom, and a removable false bottom for said oven abovelsaid burner having means for intercepting theescape of gases to the front.
3. In a cookstove, the combination with an oven having a bottom flue and rear flue connected therewith, covering only a portion'of the rear wall of the oven, of a swell or rearward extension of the oven rear wall 7 beyond said bottom fine, a gas burner located in said rearward extension arranged horizontally above the oven bottom, an air inlet to the burner in the portion of said 'rear wall uncovered by said flue, and an outlet in the portion of said rear wall covered by said flue.
