To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS S. Plrn nrrs, a citizen of the United States, res1d1ng at Geneva, in the county of Ontari and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention 1s to prov de a new and improved type of stove 1n whlch the oven may be heated either by coal or by gas or by both.
This and other objects of the inventlon will be fully illustrated in the drawings, described in the specification and pomted out in the claims at the end thereof.

In the drawings reference numeral 1 Indicates a stove in which is provided a grate 2 in which coal is burned in the ordinary manner for heating the top of the stove and the oven. 3 indicates the top of the stove and 4 indicates the oven. the oven and through a horizontal flue 8 at the bottom of the oven. From the horizontal flue 8 the products of combustion pass rearwardly into the smoke pipe 9. This part of the stove is similar to that which is ordinarily used in coal ranges.
Below the lower left hand corner of the oven is placed a chamber 10 having the gas burners 11 and 12 therein. This chamber is separated from the ash pit and grate or fire box by-a wall 13. At the left of the oven is carried a plate-14 between which plate 14 and the wall 13 is formed the passage way 16 through which the products of combustion from the gas burners 11 and 12 pass upwardly. At the front end of the plate 14 are formed the openings 15, 15, 15, through which a part of the products of combustion may pass around the side of the plate 14 into the oven 4.

The plate 14 is fastened to the wall 13 by the bolts. 18. As shown in Fig. 1 the plate 14 and Wall 13 are inclined to the left at the lower corner of the oven where they communicate with and form the chamber that contains the gas burners.
Through the opposite side of the oven at the bottom is provided an opening 19 into the flue 7 through which the products of combustion from the burners emerge into the flue 7. A damper 20 is provided by which this opening may be closed when gas is not beingused' and when the coal is being burned in the grate.
The front of the stove is closed by a plate 21 which carries the door of the oven. This plate is partly broken away so that the structure of the oven may the more clearly appear. This plate also closes the end of the chamber containing the gas burners and the ends of the flues 5, 6, 7 and 8 and the inner .margin of it substantially coincides with the edge of the walls of the oven, coinciding 'with the edge of the straight upper portion of the wall 13.
As will be seen from Fig. 1, four plates on the top of the stove are ordinarily heated from the grate, while four other plates are heated from gas burners which fed with gas through the pipe 23' through suitable valve connections.
The plate 14 is placed at the side or on of the oven andis so constructed and placed that it will not interfere with the heating of the oven by the grate directly through the wall adjacent to thegrate. For this purpose the plate 14 is provided with holes at the side which permit the circulation of air around the end of the plate and the plate stops short of the top of the-oven so that air can pass over the top of the plate. This arrangement of the gas burner and deflecting plate leaves the bottom of the oven free from any obstruction due to the gas burner. It also causes the ovento be heated thereafter when the products of combustion from either coal or gas pass through the flue 8 they are applied to the heating of the oven on the outside so that the oven is also heated from belowldirectly through the one bottom plate of the oven. In this way a good distribution of heat with a uniform heating of the oven is secured which will avoid an intense local heat or overheating in any place.
The heat is applied from a burner outside of the oven first directly to the interior of the oven and thereafter directly through the bottom of the oven and does not have to pass through some other plate forming a second bottom of the oven as well, which plate is' Andused in many stoves where the burner is plate must usually. be removed when the oven 1s heated by the burning of coal alone.
.It will .also be seen that in 'a' plicants' stove the products of combustion rom coal and gas follow substantially parallel courses through the stove and are kept separate from each other by the walls of the oven till they reach the damper 20 and thereafter they mix and follow one and the same course through the stove namely the flues 7 8 and Q'toheat theoven bottom from beneath.
In applicants stove the only change that must be made to adapt it to the several kinds of heating is the openingand closing of the damper 20.
I claim.
1. In a combined coal and gas range the combination of an oven capable of being heated by either coal or gas or both, said oven havlng a coal grate at one side thereof and a flue therefrom passing over the top, down the side and under the oven and up at the back of the oven, a gas combustion chamber located at the lower corner of the oven and under the coal grate and sealed from the grate, a passageway leading up from said combustion chamber to the top 'of the oven and discharging the products of combustion at the top and side of'the oven, an exhaust-opening at the opposite side of the oven near the bottom thereof through which the roducts of the gas combustion can pass irectly into the downwardl extending portion of said flue passing own therethrough and through the ot er flues and under the bottom of and up at the back of the oven.
2. In a combined coal and gas range the v combination of an oven capable of being heated by either coal or gas or both, said oven having a coal grate at one side thereof and a flue therefrom passing overlthe top. down the side and under the oven and up at the back of the oven, a gas combustion chamber located at the lower corner of the oven and under the coal grate and sealed from the grate, a passage way. leading up from said combustion chamber to the top of the oven and discharging the products of combustion at the top and side of the oven, an exhaust opening at the opposite side of the oven near the bottom thereof through which the products of the gas combustion can pass directly into "the downwardly extending portion of sald flue passing down therethrough and through the other flues and underthe bottom of and up at the back of the oven, a valve for closing said exhaust opening.
3. A range having an oven therein with a coal grate on one side thereof with a flue therefrom passing over the top, down the side,'under the bottom and up the back of the oven, a gas combustion chamber located under the lower corner of the oven and under the coal grate and separated therefrom, said gas combustion, chamber discharging its products of combustion directly into the oven, a plate for deflecting it to the top of the oven, an'exhaust opening on the opposite side of the .oven for discharging the products of combustion directly into the downwardly extending portion of said flue.
4. In a combined coal and gas range the combination of an oven having a coal grate and a gas combustion chamber on one side thereof separated from each other and located outside of said oven, a flue for the coal grate arranged over the to and down the opposite side of the oven, t e oven being connected with the gas combustion chamber to permit the products of combustion of the gas chamber to first heat one of the side walls of the oven and pass. into the upper part of the oven on one side thereof and thence across or through the oven itself and into said flue on the opposite side of the oven, near the bottom thereof, and through a common flue arranged under the oven and up the back of the oven.
5. In a stove the combination of an oven, a gas burner and a coal grate for heating said oven, said burner and grate being separated from each other and being located outside of the oven, means for separately conducting the products of combustion of the coal grate partway around the outside of the oven, means for conducting the prodnets of combustion of the gas burner first against one of the side walls of the oven and thence into the oven near the top o'none side and thence to the bottom of the oven on the other side, means for combining the products of combustion outside of the oven and assing them directly under the oven and u the back of the oven.

a gas burner and a coal grate for heating said oven, said burner and grate belng separated from each other both being located outside the oven and at one and the same side of the oven and both operating to first heat said side of the oven, means for heating said oven by the products of combustion of said grate and burner, said means permitting the heating of the oven either from the grate on the outside or the burner partly on the inside and partly on the outside either separately or from both together at one and the same time, the products of combustion of both the grate and burner coming directly into contact with the oven during the whole passage thereof through the stove.
7. In a stove the combination of an oven,

'In a stove the com ination of an oven, a gas burner and a coal grate for heating said oven, said burner and grate being separated from each other and being located outside of the oven and at one and the same side of the oven and both operatin to first heat said side of theoven, means or separately conducting the products of combus tion of the coal grate partway around the outside of the oven, means for conducting the products of combustion of the gas burner the whole length of the inside of the oven, means for combining the products of combustion outside of the oven and passing them directly under'the oven and up the back of the oven, said means preventing the each other while following substantially arallel courses and thereafter joining them or further application to theoven, said means preventing the products of combustion from the grate from entering the oven.
11. In a combined coal and gasrange the combination of an oven having a coal grate and a gas combustion chamber located at one side thereof and outside of the oven, a passageway communicating between the gas combustion chamber and the inside of the oven, a deflecting plate extending from below said passageway upwardly in said oven by which the products of combustion of said gas combustion chamber are deflected toward the top of said oven, an exhaust opening on the opposite side of said oven through which the products of combustion escape from said oven after traveling the length of the oven.
12. In a combined coal and gas range the combination of an oven having a coal grate and a gas combustion chamber located at one side thereof and outside of the oven, a passageway communicating between the gas combustion chamber and the inside of the oven, a deflecting plate extending from below said passageway upwardly in said oven by which the products of combustion of said gas combustion chamber are' deflected toward the top of said oven, an exhaust opening on the opposite side of said oven through which the products of combustion escape from said oven after traveling the length of the even, a flue extending, downwardly on said opposite side of the oven and under the oven through which said products of combustion travel after leaving said oven, the bottom of the oven being left above and below free from obstructions.
13. In a combined coal and'ga's range the combination of an oven having a coal grate and a gas combustion chamber on one side thereof separated from each other and located outside of said oven and. at one and the same side of the oven and both operating to first heat said side of the oven, a flue for the coal grate arranged over the top and down theopposite side of the oven, the oven being connected with the gas combustion chamber to permit the products of combustion of the gas chamber to pass across or through the oven itself and into said flue on the opposite side of the oven and a common flue arranged under the oven and up the back of the even, said flue heating the same bottom whether coal or gas burned separately or in combination.
14. In a combined coal and gas range the combination of an oven having a coal grate and a gas combustion chamber on one side thereof separated from each other and located outside of said oven and at one and the same side of the oven and both operating to first heat said side of the oven, a

In a stove the combination of an oven, a gas burner and a coal grate for heating said oven, a flue extending around the outside'of said oven through which the products of combustion from the burner being located at the slde of the oven parallel to said grate, an opening through one of the sides of said oven communicating with said flue, the products of combustion from the burner being discharged into the oven and passing out of the oven through said opening into the flue and then passing around the outside of the rest of the oven, said burner and grate operating either separatelv or together to heat said oven, the products of combustion therefrom being combined outside of the oven and passed through the flue directly under the bottom and up the back of the even, said oven having but a single bottom.-
18. In a two fuel range having usual top end and bottom fiues around the oven, the combination of a gas burner situated at one endof the oven and communicating with the oven at one end thereof, said oven being provided with an exit for the prodnets of the gas combustion at the opposite end thereof, said exit communicating With the bottom flue of the oven at the inlet thereof.
