LADYS POWDER-PUFF.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. Q, 191?.
Application filed Januaryl9, 1916. Serial No. 72,925.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RoxANNA A. HAMPTON, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York.
is to provide an improved device of this class made up in the form of a package and used in connection with a handkerchief, whereby the powder puff may be used for powdering the face Without detection, even in public.
The invention consists in an improved form of powder puff and in means for connecting the same with and centrally of one side of an ordinary pocket handkerchief, and said invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:-
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved powder put and showing the same in connection with a handkerchief; Fig. 2 a transverse section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a view similar to F ig. 1, but showing the puff in section and showing a modification; Fig. 4 a transverse sectional view of the puff shown in Fig. 3; Fig. 5 a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the pufi folded up and secured by means of a band with which it is provided; Fig. 6 a perspective view of a powder receptacle mace in the form of a bottle, and used in the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and; Fig. 7 a view of a securing band with which the puff is provided and by means of which it is connected with the handkerchief.
In the practice of my invention, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 5, I provide a puff a which is preferably approximately rectangular, and also preferably square, in form and the body portion of which is composedof wool, cotton, or any other suitable material usually employed in the construction of powder puffs, and this body portion of material is secured to a central casing a which forms a pocket adapted to receive a receptacle Z), shown in Figs. 2 and 6 and indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and composed of either metal or glass and provided with a perforated end cap 72 or said casing or the pocket formed thereby may be used as a receiver for a supplemental receptacle 0 composed of chamois or any other suitable soft, flexible material, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
When the form of construction shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 6 is employed, the pocket formed by the central flexible casing a is partially closed to form a supplemental pocket a which opens outwardly through one side of the puff and into which the receptacle b may be inserted, and I also provide a securing band cl which is secured to and transversely of one side or the back of the pod and which is provided at its opposite ends with the separate parts 6 and e of a ball and socket fastening device one of which is secured to one side of said band and the other to the opposite side thereof, and the band Z) is also provided centrally thereof with one part 7 of a ball and socket fastening device, the ,other part f of which is secured to the handkerchief g centrally of one side thereof.
With this construction of the puff a, said puff may be compactly rolled up, as shown in Fig. 5 in which form it may be secured by the band d, and by simply shaking or agitating the pufi, or both the puff and the handkerchief, as will be understood the powder in the puff b will be shaken out into one end portion of the rolled puff and the package thus formed including both the handkerchief and the puff may be used for powdering the face, as will be readily understood, and a little practice will enable the operator to powder her face even in public without being detected in the operation.
In the form of construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4, a supplemental flexible receptacle 0 is substituted for the receptacle 6, and in this form of construction the pocket formed by the central flexible casing a to which the body material of the pufi is secured is entirely open at one side so that the receptacle 0 may be inserted thereinto, and said receptacle o is provided centrally of one side with perforations c any desired number of which may be employed, and the corresponding side of the top of the puff a is provided with a large central opening a and with this form of construction either before or after the puff is rolled up, as shown in Fig. 5, it
may be agitated so as to discharge the poW- der h therein through the perforations c and into one side of the pufl, after'w-hich the puff may be used as hereinbefore. described for the purpose of powdering the face. It willbe understood that thesupplemental receptacle 0 may be made of any desired size as may also the puff a and the pocket therein, and this is also true of the receptacle 6, when used, and the corresponding pocket a into which said receptacleb is inserted.
The band cl may be secured to the puffby threads-2' passed through one sideor the back.
in connection with a handkerchief, and the preferred means which I employ for connecting said puff with the handkerchief, it
will be understood that my invention is not limited to this feature of the construction herein shown and described, nor to the details of the construction of the puff as here in set out, and changes inand modifications of the construction of the puff and the means for securing the same to a handkerchief may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without, departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-tersPatent is V V 1. A flat flexible powder puff provided with a, pocket, a separate receptacle adapted to be inserted into said pocket, a'band secured to one sideof; said puff, whereby said pufi may be rolled up and secured in the rolled condition, and means. for. securingsaid puff to a handkerchief consisting; of a two part fastening-device one part of. which is secured to said band and. the other to the handkerchief;
2. A fiat powder puff provided with. a
pocket, a separate powder receptacle adapted to be inserted into said pocket and having perforations, a securing band: secured to one.
