Specification of lg iters Zatent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1935.
lie it iillUWll that we. (n.xnnns (imam-1s J. Wi-Ji; r. citizens of the l uited Xon'rn,
. Ttates. and
the said (iianuis Xon'rn being a resident of Xewport. in the county of tampbell and State of hentuclcv. and (n.vnmas .l. ill ixsixo and 'liionas .slclYm-IXY being: both residents of tincinnati. county i of llamilton, and State of Ohio. have invented a new and useful improvement in Combs. of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. reference being bad to the accompanyin; drawings, forming a part of this specification.
()ur invention relates to combs, and particularly to that class of combs used by ladies in dressing their hair for decorating the coillure and retaining ti arrangement of the same. Many, if not all. ladies desire, in connection with the proper a 'rangeinent of the coiiiurc. some perfume or extract for ilnparting' to the hair a sweet and pleasant odor. and it is the object of our invention to provide, in a comb of the class mentioned, suitable means for retaininp such perfume, \vhetherin the form of a liquid extract or a powder. so that tlre same may be liberated in close proximity to the hair, thereby givin and imparting to the samefia delicate and fragrant odor. in connection with such a device. it is a further object of our invention to provide means, in a comb constructed in accordance with the above re lplirenients. for retaining the perfume against exhalation until required, so that the perfume placed in the comb (at the time of arranging the coitfure needfnotbe dissemiuatcd into the atmosphere,"until such time as its fragrance is especially required. lVith such and other objects in View, as will, more fully appear from the following: description thereof. our invention consists in detail of the following construction.
In the drawings: llgure 1 is.a back view of a comb constructed in accordance with our invention; Fig. :3 is a vertical section of Fig. 1.: l ig. 3- is an enlarged view of the perfume receptacle: Fig. l is a section of the )erfume barrel and rece itacle: l i 5 is a detail of one means of placing the perfume in the receptacle; Fig. (3 is a detail of another means for placing a perfl une in the receptacle.
The numeral 1 indicates a ladys comb of the kind used in retaining the permanent arrangement of the coili'ure. Said comb may be made of any suitable. material and may be of any design and provided with any desired ornamentation, as brilliants, gold and silver filigree wonk or otherwise. The bacl; and teeth of said comb are indicated respectively by the numerals 2 and 3. Upon the back of said comb is placed a .barrel for the receipt of the perfume receptacle The barrel l may be of any suitable size and shape consistentnvith the design of the comb and the ornamentation thereof, and may itself be comprised in the ornamental design of the back of said comb. The said barrel is provided with two rows of perforations (3, through which the perfume may be liberated or exhaled. The perfume receptacle 5 is designed to fit snuglv'inside the barrel land to rotate therein. The said re ceptaclc is provided. with ornamental ends 7, which may be ()1 any suitable design, and two longitudinal slots 8, which are so spaced on the receptacle that they niay be made to register with-the rows of perforations 6 in the barrel. ()ne of, the ends '7 is adapted to serve as a stopper for the? receptacle 5. Near one end of the receptacle vided. said stud being adapted to enter into slight depressions 10 on the inside the barrel to retain thereceptacle in either closed or open position, c. in the positions where the slots 8 are closed by the walls of the barrel and where said slots register with the perforations in said barrel respectively. The stud i), it will be understood p rmit ted to pass from one to the other of said depressions during the rotation of the receptacle by reason of the slightly springy nature of the barrel constiuction. The. stud and depressions as above described are,- however, but illustrative of one construction by which the proper limitation of the rotation of the receptacle may be attained, and we contemplate as within the spirit of our invention such other suitable constructions as may be substituted therefor the nature of which will be obvious to those skilled in Elie art.
For the purpose of placing the perfume in the receptacle, we provide, -whcre the perfume in the shape of a liquid, an ab sorbent pad or sponge 11 which is adapted to fit inside the receptacle when saturated.
Ha powder, or non-liquid perfume is used, a sachet bag 12 adapted to fit intothe receptacle, as shown in Fig. 6 is provided.
The nature and use of our invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
The sponge or bag having been provided with a suitable perfume and placed in the receptacle, said receptacle is placed in the barrel. If it is desired at once to use the perfume, the receptacle is so placed in the barrel that the slots will register with the perforations, and the perfume will thus be liberated, the receptacle beins? held in this position by the stud resting in one of the depressions inside the barrel. If the perfume is not inn'nediately desired the recep- 'tacle is rotated so that the slots are closet by the barrel walls, where it is held b y means of the stud 9 and one of the depressions 10. When the perfume islater desired, it is merely necessary to give the receptacle a slight turn so that the slots register with the perforations.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters latent, is: v v
In combination witlran ornamental comb for the permanent arrangement. of the coitfure, a barrel on said comb, a receptacle in said barrel, said receptacle being adapted to rotate therein, perforations in said barrel, a slot in said receptacle adapted to register with said perforations, and a pad adapted to be saturated with perfume in said receptacle.
in witness whereof wehave hereunto set our hands in the presence of two witnesses, at Cincinnati, llaiuilton county, ()hio, this 1:") day of October, 19H.
