The looper-supporting shaft is oscillated by an eccentric 23, which is carried by the oscillating shaft 20, and an eccentric strap 24 cooperating with the eccentric 23 is piv otally connected to an adjustable stud 25,

Mounted on the main shaft 4 is an eccentric 27. A link 28 cooperates With the eccentric 27. A cross shaft 29 is mounted in suitable bearings in the standard, and said cross shaft carries a collar 30 provided with spaced arms 31, 31, and these parts form a rocking member. The link 28 at its lower end is connected with a ball stud, which is mounted on one of the arms 31, so that as the main shaft rotates, the cross shaft 29 will be oscillated through the link 28. A second cross shaft 32 is mounted in suitable hearings in the standard, and said cross shaft is provided with a collar 33 carrying spaced arms .34. A link 35 is pivoted between the sp'aced arms 34, and the spaced arms 31. The shaft 29, therefore, through the arms 31, link 35 and arms 34, will cause the shaft 32 to oscillate. The shaft 32 is provided with a second collar 36, which carries a downwardly projecting arm 37, hav ins a. ball stud to which the link 12 is pivoted. The oscillations of the shaft 32 are, therefore, through the link 12 transmitted to the looper carrier, and cause the loopers to move into and out of the needle loops. On the collar 30 is another arm 38. This arm 38 carries a hall stud, to which is pivoted a link 39. The link 39 at its lower end is connected. with an arm 40, which is attached to the outer end 'of the shaft 16. The oscillations of the shaft 29, will, therefore, be imparted directly to the shaft 16. and through the rocker 15 will raise and lower the feed dog into and out of engagement with the material. It will, therefore, be seen that the link 28 oscillates the looper into and out of the needle loop, and causes the feed dog to be raised and lowered into and out of engagement with the fabric.
On the main shaft 4 is a second eccentric 41. with'coiipcrates with a link 42. The link 42 at its lower end is connected to a ball stud on an arm 43, carried by the end of the shaft 20. The shaft 20, as above noted, through the eccentric 23 oscillates the looper-supporting shaft 11 and moves the loopers laterally to avoid the needle. Ihe shaft 20 also, through the crank pin on the end thereof, oscillates the feed dog-supporting frame, and gives to the feed dog its feeding movements. Therefore, the link 42 not only moves the looper laterally, but also gives the feeding movements to the feed thread-controlling arm 44. This arm {is pivoted to an adjustable bracket 45. i aid;
thread-controlling arm is provided with a projecting part 46, which is connected by a link 47 to an arm 48 on the outer end of the shaft 32. The oscillations of the shaft 32 will, therefore, impart an oscillation t0 the arm 4-1. This looper-thradcontrolling mechanism is shown, described and claimed in my co-pending application Serial No. 658,556, filed November 4th, 1911, and further description thereof will not be necessary.
The arms 31 carried by the shaft 29, which imparts the forward and backward movement to the looper, move from a position substantially in a horizontal plane, when the looper is at one end of its stroke, to a position inclined to a horizontal plane. When the parts are positioned as shown in Fig. 7, the looper is at the forward end of its stroke. At this time, the arms 31 and the link are substantially in alinement, and. therefore, the looper is given an ex tended dwell while at the forward end of its stroke. This particular looper mechanism per se, is shown, described and claimed in my copending application Serial No. 658,555, filed November 4th, 1911.
The arm 38 moves from a position slightly at one side of a vertical plane passin; through the axis of the shaft 29, to a position considerably at the other side thereof.
When the parts are positioned as shown in Fig. 8, the arm 38 and the link 39 are substantially in line, and, therefore, little or no movement will be imparted to the arm 40 and the shaft 16 oscillated thereby. lVhen these parts are positioned as shown in Fig. 7, any movement of the arm 30 will impart a movement to the arm 40. When the parts are positioned as shown in Fig. 8, the feed dog is beneath the work support, and when the parts are positioned as shown in Fig. 7, the feed dog is above the work support. It will, therefore, be seen that the feed dog will lie raised quickly into engagement with the fabric, held in engagement with the fabric a short time owing to the dwell in the movement of the link 28 through the action of the eccentric operating the same, moved quickly out of engagemcnt with the fabric and held out of engagement with the fabric a considerable time through the dwell caused by the arm 55R and link 3!) moving into alinemcnt. I have, therefore, provided a feed-operating mechanism, wherein the feed dog is moved into and out of engagement from the mechanism which moves the looper into and out of the needle loop, and said mechanism for operating the feed dog is timed to give the desired movements above stated. The necessary dwell in the up and down movements of the feed dog, and also the necessary dwcll of the looper while in the needle loop and hcing moved laterally, are all derived from a single eccentric, by reason of the arrangement of the levers and links which give the desired differential nmvcmen ts.
The arms 3] and the link constltute a toggle mechanism wherein thc members of the toggle move into alinement, and thereby produce a dwell in the parts operated th rough the toggle. The members 38 and 39 also constitute a toggle mechanism which moves into alinement and gives a dwell to,
thc parts operated thereby.
The shaft 20 is oscillated through the movements of the link 42, and, therefore, said shaft will be given a slight dwell at cach cnd of its stroke, while the eccentric is passing the dead center. The oscillation of the shaft 520 through the eccentric 23 carried thcrchy, vihratcs the loopcr laterally, so that it is givcn .a needle-avoiding movement. This ccccntric. also slightly increases the dwell given to the looper while it is moving into the needle loop, so that there is substantially no lateral movement of the looper at this time.
5y the ahove n'icchanism, I have provided dcviccswvhcrchy the loopcr is moved into and out of the needle loop and the feed dog is raiscd and lowcrcd by a single eccentric mountcd on the upper rotary shaft. The loopcr is moved laterally to avoid the needle and the feed dog is moved hack and forth to fccd the material through a second eccentric, mounted on a rotary shaft in the overhanging arm. These devices are so disposed as to give the proper timed movement to the loopcr and feed dog, and said deviccs consist entirely of positiwly operated parts, so that thc machinc nay be given great speed, and is cspccially adapted for stitching heavy materials such as leather or the like.
The arm 37 which moves the looper into and out of the ncedle loop, may he adjusted on the shaft 32 hy loosening the sci-cw which clamps the arm to the shaft, and hy this adjustmcnt of thc arm, the vibrating position of the loopcr is changed. The link 39 may also be adjusted in, the usual manner, as this link is provided with a right and left hand thread at each end thereof, and by lengthening or shortening the link. the differential throw given to the arm 40 which controls thc looper thread, may he varied. The link 28 may he similarly adjusted as to length, and by this adjustment of thc link, the differential throw givcn to the rocking members 31 and 38 may be varied. By
these various adjustments tho looper may he )ropcrly timed hoth as to its forward and )ackward as well as its lateral throw. and also the thread arm for the looper thread may be properly timed.
By the ahovc construction, a variable movement is given to thc loopcr, and this movement is so timcd that thc loopcr will move relatively fast into the nccdle loop, and relatively slow when the needle is going through the triangle formed by the looper thread, the body of the loopcr, and the previous necdlc loop on the loopcr. Furthermore, by these fast and slow movements, :1 much shorter loopcr may he used, without any liahility of skipping stitches.
It is ohvions that minor changes in tho details of construction may he made, with out departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. A sewing machine including in combination, a main rotating shaft, a ford dog, a loopcr, a needle, in ans for reciprocating the needle, an eccentric mounted on said main shaft. devices operated from said cceentric for moving the loopcr into and out of the needle loop and for raising and lowering the feed dog. a second eccentric on the main shaft, and devices operated from said second eccentric for moving the looper latorally. and for giving to the said feed dog a forward and haclnvard movement.
2. A sewing machine including in comhination, a standard, an overhanging arm carricd thcrchy, a main rotating shaft in said ovcrhanging arm, a needle. means for reciprocating said needle, a loopcr, a feed dog, an ccccntric on said shaft, :1 link connected to said ccccntric, a shaft in said standard oscillatcd hy said link, devices opcratcd from said shaft for moving the loopcr into and out of thc nccdle loop and for raising and lowering said feed dog. a second ccccntric on said main shaft, and devices opcratcd thcrchy for moving the loopcr laterally and for giving the feed dog haclnvard and forward movements.
3. A scwing machine including in comhination. a standard. an overhanging arm carried thcrchy, a rotary shaft mounted in said orcrhanging arm. a needle, means for rcciprocating said nccdlo, a loopcr, a trans vcrsc shaft mrwntcd in the standard, an ceccntric on said rotary shaft, :1 link coiipcrating therewith for oscillating said transverse sha fl. a sccond transvcrsc shaft in said standard, dcviccs for oscillating said sccond transverse shaft from said first named transvcrsc shaft, dcviccs for moving the loopcr into and out of the needle loo-p operated by said second transverse shaft, devicles operated from said first named shaft fol raising and lowering the feed dog, and means for giving the feed dog a backward and forward movement.
4. A sewing machine including in combination, a standard, an overhanging arm carried thereby, a rotary shaft mounted in said overhanging arm, a needle, means for reciprocating said needle, a looper, a transverse shaft mounted in the standard, an eccentric on said main shaft, a link cooperating therewith for oscillating said transverse shaft, 3. second transverse shaft in said standard, de vices for oscillating said second transverse shaft from said first named transverse shaft, devices for moving the looper into and out of the needle loop operated by said second transverse shaft. devices operated from said first named shaft for raising and lowering the feed dog, a second eccentric on said main shaft, and devices operated from said second eccentric for moving the loopcr laterally and for giving the feed dog a forward and backward movement.
5. A sewing machine including in combination. a looper, a feed dog. a main rotating shaft, an eccentric carried by said main shaft. a transverse shaft oscillated from the eccentric on the main shaft, a toggle mechanism operated by said transverse shaft for giving one movement to the looper, and a toggle mechanism operated by said trans verse shaft for giving one movement to the feed dog.
6. A sewing machine including in combination, a Work support, a looper, a feed dog. a main rotating shaft. an eccentric carried by the main rotating shaft, a transverse shaft oscillated from said eccentric, a toggle mechanism actuated by said transverse shaft for moving the looper into and out of the needle loop and giving a dwell at the forward end of its stroke. and a second toggle mechanism operated from said transverse shaft for raising and lowering the feed dog and giving a dwell thereto while beneath the work support.
7. A sewing machine including in combination, a main rotating shaft, a looper. a feed dog. a transverse shaft, a collar mount; ed on said transverse shaft, arms carried by said collar and projecting at angles to each other. means for connecting one of the arms to the. main shaft. \vherehy said transverse shaft is oscillated, means also connected to said arm for moving the loopcr into and out of the needle loop, devices carried by the other arm carried by the collar for raising and lowering the feed dog.
8. A sewing machine including in comhination. a looper, a shaft, means for oscillating the shaft. a second shaft, devices for connecting said second shaft to the looper, means for operating the second shaft from the first named shaft and giving a dwell thereto, a take-up for the looper thread, and
devices operated from the second shaft for oscillating said take-up and giving an increased dwell thereto.
9. A sewing machine including in combination, a looper, a shaft, means foroscillating the shaft, a second shaft, devices for vices operated from said first named shaft for raising and lowering the. fed dog.

A sewing machine including in combination, a looper, a shaft,means for oscillating the shaft, a second shaft, devices for cofiliccting said second shaft to the looper, means for operating the second shaft from the first named shaft and givin a dwell thereto, a take-up for the looper t read, devices operated from the second shaft for oscillating said take-u and giving an increased dwell thereto, a eed dog. devices operated from said first named shaft for raising and lowerin; the feed dog, said feed dog-operating devices including a toggle mechanism for giving a dwell to the movements of the feed 1 og. 11.
