DUDLEY S. SEYMOUR, OF OAK PARK, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO 'UNIONSPECIAL MACHINE COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
FEEDING MECHANISM FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Application filed August 8, 1908.
'Oak Park, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feeding Mechanism for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in feeding mechanism, and more especially to feeding mechanism for sewing machines.
An object of my invention is to provide a feeding mechanism wherein the parts for operating the feed dog are durable in construction, and positive in action, and which are so arranged as to give to the feed dog, a forward feeding movement, substantially in a straight line parallel with the work support.
A further object of the invention is to provide a feeding mechanism for a sewing machine with operating parts which are located as far as possible from the stitching point, so that dirt and lint dislodged from the material by the needle, will not fall upon the bearings of the movable parts.
Still further objects of my invention will in part be obvious and will in part be more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawings which show by way of illustration one embodiment of my inventionz-Figure 1 is a front elevation, with certain parts removed, showing a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view with certain parts in section, showing the forward end of the machine, with my feeding mechanism applied thereto. Fi 3 is a View of the feeding mechanism taken from the front end of the machine, also showing certain parts in section. Fig. 4 is a sectional View on the line 44 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the movement of the link which gives the up and down movement to the feed bar.
I have shown my invention as applied to the Union Special Enclosed Bag type of machine, although it is obvious that from certain aspects, the same maybe applied to any typeof sewing machine.
In the drawings, the bed plate 1 has. risingatherefrom, an inclosed. casing. which ex- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 12, 1915.
Serial No. 447,536.
tends forward to form the overhanging arm 3, and carries at its forward end, a needle head 1. A needle 0 1s carried by a needle bar (3, and is reciprocated by a lever 7 from the main shaft 8 by means of the link 9. The needle mechanism however, and the thread controllers therefor, form no part of the present invention, and will not need further description.
Cooperating with the needle 5, is a thread carrying looper 10, which is pivoted at 11 on a looper carrier 12. Said looper carrier or rocker 12, is mounted at one end on a short'stud 13 supported by a lug let, rising from the bed plate 1. Said looper carrier 12 is mounted at its other end on a short shaft 15 mounted in a bearing 16, formed in the casing 2 of the machine. Said shaft 15 extends through the bearing 16, and carries a crank arm 17 at its free end. The arm 17 carries a ball stud 18 at its free end, which engages a ball socket l9 Fig. 4), formed in an eccentric strap 20, which cooperates with an eccentric 21 on the main shaft 8. As the eccentric 21 rotates, the arm 17 is oscillated, and the looper thereby given its lateral or needle avoiding movements. The looper is oscillated on its ivotal support 11 by a link 22, which is connected in the usual manner to the needle lever extension 23. A feed dog 2st is detachablv supported by the feed bar 25. Said feed bar is pivoted at 26 to a rocking frame 27, which is pivotally supported at 28 in suitable bearings carried by the bed plate. Said rocking frame 27 is vibrated back and forth by means of a link 29 which is pivoted at one end to the rocking frame, and at its other end to a slotted arm 30, formed integral with the eccentric strap 20" (see Fig. l). The arm 30 is slotted at 31, andthe link 29 is pivoted to a stud 32, which may be adjusted in the slot 31'and sec red in any desired position in said slot. By adjusting the stud 32 in the slot 31, the throw of the rocking frame 27 may be varied, and thus the amount of movement given to the feed dog correspondingly varied. As a means for giving the vertical movements to the feed dog, I have provided the feed bar 25 with a downwardly extending arm 33, which in turn is provided with forwardly projecting arms 34 and 85. The looper carrier or rocker 12 is provided with forwardly projecting lugs I 36 and 37. A curved link 38 is pivoted at 39 to the lug 37, and at 40 t0 the free end of the arm 35. A curved link i1 is pivoted to the lug 36 at 42, and to the free end of the arm 34 at 43.
The operation of my feeding mechanism is as follows: Vfhen the eccentric 21 is in the position shown in Fig. 1, the arm is at the rear end of its stroke, and the feed bar with the feed dog has just completed its feeding movement. A continued movement of the eccentric causes the arm 30 to move I at the rear end of its stroke, as shown in' Fig. 3. As the feed bar moves forward. the
causes the feed dog to begin its feeding movement. The link 38 swings back toward a vertical line passing through the pivotal point 39. The tendency of the swinging movement of the link 38 is to carry the point 40 downward. At this time, however, the lug 37 is still rising, and the upward movement of the lug 37 is offset by the downward movement of the point40, and the point 10 will move toward the rear of the machine in substantiallv a. straight line, or from the position at a, Fig. 5, to the position at b. A further movement of the eccentric 21 will cause the lug 37 to drop. The link has now passed the vertical position and the point 40 tends to rise, owing to the swinging of the link to the rear of the vertical. 'This is, however, offset bythe downward movement of the lug 37, and the point e0 continues its straight line movement.
From the above described operation of parts, it will be seen that the feed dog is given a feeding movement which is substantially a right line movement parallel with the work support, and the feeding movement is followed by a quick movement out of engagement with the material, and a quick movement into engagement with the material.
' The illustrated type of machine is especially adapted for stitching coarse burlap for making bags. In this character of work, there is a great deal of lint and dirt dislodged from the material during the stitching operation. It will readily be seen that the operating parts of my feeding mechanism are located at a considerable distance from the stitching point, and, therefore, the bearings are not as liable to be worn by the grit and dirt falling from the material. 1 I have also shown the main shaft 8 as terminating after passing through the casing 2 sufliciently far to carry the thread controller 44, so that underneath the stitching point, there are no rotating parts, as has heretofore been usual in this machine. The casing 2 is provided with a slot &5 to allow the link 29 to operate the feed rocker. The feed dog receives all its movements from a single cam, which is housed within the easing where the same may be kept free from dirt.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts, may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus particularly described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a work support of a feed bar, a feed dog carried thereby between its ends, a main shaft located beneath the plane of the work support, an eccentric member carried by said main shaft, a rock shaft connected to said feed bar for moving the same back and forth, devices for connecting said rock shaft to said eccentric member, a second rock shaft located in front of said feed dog, devices for connecting said second rock shaft to said feed bar for moving the same up and down, and devices for connecting said second rock shaft with said eccentric member.
