Specification of Letters Patent. 'Pateni ed Jan, 2 191?,
Application filed December 15, 1914 Serial No. 877,392.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLI A. PRAHL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe- Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in stove pipes and has particular application to means for fastening stove pipes in the chimney.
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a fastening device for stove pipes whereby the chimney end of the pipe may be placed within the chimney and securely held therein in any desired adjusted position.
It is also my purpose to improve and simplify the general construction of stove pipe fasteners and to provide fastening means which may be rapidly and conveniently manipulated and whereby the pipe may be readily secured to the chimney and removed therefrom.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view through the chimney showing my improved securing device. Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the device shown in Fig. 1, removed from the chimney.
' Referring now to the drawings in detail, 22 indicates the chimney or flue formed-with the usual opening 23 and disposed in the opening 23 and of a length corresponding to that of the opening is a metal sleeve 24. The sleeve 24: is outstruck to provide spurs 25 embedded in the wall of the opening 23 and these spurs act to hold the sleeve 24 against accidental turning movement in the opening.
21 indicates one end of a pipe section disposed within the sleeve 24 and the sleeve 24L has a smooth bore, while the end of the pipe section 21 within the sleeve is similarly formed and in order to hold the pipe section 21 securely within the sleeve 24, I employ a split clamping band 30 formed at diametrically opposite points with outwardly projecting prongs 31 and having the ends thereof connected with the respective ends of a curved link 32 disposed v within-the band and having one end provided with a handle 33 whereby the link may be swung to contract the band 30. In practice, the link 32 is swung by means of the handle33 to contract the band 30 and the latter pressed within the chimney end of the pipe section 21'," The handle of the link is now released and the band expands, thus forcing the prongs 31 through the metal of the section 21 and the sleeve 2% and into the wall of the flue opening. its the prongs 31 penetrate the pipe section and the sleeve, such section and sleeve are locked to each other and when the prongs enter the wall ofthe flue opening the pipe 7 section and sleeve are locked within the flue opening.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation and manner of employing my invention will be readily apparent.
I claim:
The combination with a chimney having a flue opening therein, of a 'sleeve within said opening having spurs struck therefrom and embedded in the wall of the opening, a stove pipe section having one end within said sleeve, a split clamping band within said pipe section and normally engaging the inner surface thereof, spurs on said band designed to penetrate said pipe section and sleeve, and a link having the ends thereof pivotally connected to the ends of said band and provided with a rigid handle at one end whereby the band may be expanded and contracted.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLI A. PRAHL.
IVitnesses:
MORAI PRAI-IL, 'ERNA PRAHL.
