Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. T2, 1916.
Application filed May 15, 1915. Serial No.28fl20.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM E. MEAD- WELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ithaca, in the county of Tompkins and State of New York, have inventedi'certain new and useful Improvements inflPen and Pencil Caps; and I do herebydeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in pen and pencil caps and is designed primarily to house the blade -of a steel eraser, so that the same will be andy and may be easily and quickly put in Service.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device which may be constructed of rubber or a similar material and in which a plunger is provided carrying a steel blade or such a steel eraser as would ordinarily be used on a desk or in other places where such articles are frequently necessary.
With these and other objects in vieWE, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of a pen and pencil cap constructed in accordance- With this invention showing the eraser in position to be used and showing the device applied to a pencil. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view showing the cap applied to a pen and the eraser Withdrawn from its opera- "tive position, and Fig. 3 is a top plan view of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates as an entirety the outer casing of the device comprising the tubular body 2 which is formed with the end closure 3. This end closure is provided with a transversely extending slot 4 through which the blade passes when the device is in use. Formed in the side of the tubular housing 2 is a vertically extending slot 5 provided at each end with the transverse slot 6 which form branches and provide notches to lock the blade in its outer and innermost position.
Slidable in the tubular body 2 is the plunger designated generally b the numeral 7 which comprises the tubu ar body 8 provided with the end closure 9 having formed therein a central screw threaded aperture 10 for the reception of the threaded shank of the blade whichwill be more fully hereinafter described. A suitable pin 11 projects laterally from the body 8 and into the slot 5 and this pin is arranged for engagement with the end walls of the slot and the side walls of the transverse slot 6-in holding the plade in its innermost and outermost posi- The blade hereinbefore referred to is designated generally by the numeral 12 and comprises the body 13 having the cutting edges 14. formed thereon. A threaded shank 15 is formed on the body and is arranged to be threaded into the opening 10 of the plunger 7 and it will thus be seen that the blade will be rigidly held with relation to the plunger.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that when the device is not in use the blade is normally retained within the housing 2 by turning the same slightly so that the pin 11 will slide vertically through the slot 5 and may be locked in the lower slot 6. When in this position it will be clearly seen that the blade will be drawn into the housing and no portion thereof will project therefrom. Tn event that it is desired to use the knife or eraser, the pin 11 is movedso that it alines with the slot 5 and upon moving the same upwardly, it will be apparent that the blade will aline with. the slot 4 in the closure 3 and will pass therethrough until the upward limit of movement is reached wherein the pin is moved so as to engage the end wall of the upper slot 6 and it w ll be evident that the eraser will be ready for use. 7 While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is A device of the class described comprising an .outer casing having a tubular body closed at one end, said closed end provided with a transversely extending slot, said side wall of the outer casing having a vertical slot therein provided at each of its ends with a transverse slot, a tubular body 'of less diameter than the first named tubular body slidably mounted therein, said second tubular body having one end closed and having a central screw threaded aperture, a blade provided with a screw threaded shank removably fitted in the screw threaded opening of the second tubular body, said second tubular body having a lug adapted to move in the vertical slot and be turned into the transverse slots at the opposite ends of the vertical slot for holding the blade into and out beyond the first named tubular body, said blade when on the exterior of the first named tubular body and the lug is turned into the upper transverse slot, the blade will U and any rotary or accidental inward move- 15 ment of the saine'eliminated.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM E. MEADWELL.
