- UNITED ,STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. ,WOODWARD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ris'srenoa ro JOSEPH REOKENDORFER, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED SCISSORS A ND PENCILHOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,508, dated July 19, 1881.
Application filed March 2, 1881. (No model.)
I To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN H. WOODWARD, of New York city, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oombined Scissors and Pencil Holders or Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement has reference, mainly, to that kind of article which is shown and described in Letters Patent toBenson,No.235,7 26, dated December 21, 1880. I desire it to be understood, however, that it is applicable to scissors generally, and also to scissors movable in an inclosing tubular case, whether that case at the other end be provided with or adapted to receive some other article or not;
In carrying out my improvement I adopt the combination of elements which characterizes the said Bensons patented devicethat is to say, the combination, with a tubular case, of scissors mounted on a sliding support in the case, and provided with a spring acting. to spread apart the handle ends of the scissors, so that when closed and retracted within the case they Will bear with yielding pressure against the walls of the latter. The improvement which I have made is in the spring, which I form and arrange as hereinafter shown and described, so that it acts at one and the same time not only to spread apart the handle ends of the scissors, but also to press together and in contact with one another the cutting faces or edges of the scissor-blades.
The nature of my improvement will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a view of the spring detached. Fig. 3 is a view of the scissors detached.
The sheath or case A shown in the drawings, like that shownin the Benson Letters Patent, above referred to, is formed at one end to be a pencil-holder or pencil-point protector, having a slit or slot, a, and an annular shoulder, b, to limit the extent to which the pencil B can be inserted. I wish it, however, to be distinctly understood that when scissors containing my improvement are combined with an inclosing tubular case or sheath the latter may be formed and arranged to receive only the scissors, or it may be provided with or adapted to receive at the end opposite the scissors end any desired article, whether a pencil or anything else.
The general arrangement of the scissors is 5 5 the same as that shown and described in said Bensons patent. They are mountedon a block, 0, which fits, and is capable of sliding back and forth in, the tube or case A, and the block can be thus moved by a sliding external sleeve,
and between the handle ends is the spring h,
fixed to the block 0 or blade g, and bearing at its free end against the blade g in such manner as to spread apart the handle ends of the blades. The spring isformed at its free end at one side (the side adjoining that side of blade 9 on which the cutting face or edge is) with a tongue, h, which projects beyond the end, so that when the latter bears against the inner face of the handle end. of blade g the tongue will project up alongside of the handle end; The edge h of tongue h adjoining the handle is beveled or inclined as shown, and
the spring is so set that when the scissors are shut the handle end of blade y will travel down the inclined edge W, and will thereby be forced laterally in such direction as to cause the cutting-edge of the'blade g to press closely against the other blade. In this way the spring has the twofold function of opening the scissors and at the same time of exerting lateral pressure upon the blades in such manner as to press and hold their cutting edges or faces in contact with one another.
It is manifest that in lieu of an incline, h
on the spring tongue or projection, the blade 0 9' may be formed with the incline side, and
the adjoining edge or side of the tongue or projection-may be made straight.
I remark that the tube or case A, as to that portion which contains the shears or scissors, 9 5
can be made oval in cross-section instead of cylindrical, with a view to permitting the em ployment of scissors of larger size.
Havingdescribedmyinvention, whatIclaim, the blades are closing as and for the purposes and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is shown and described. 10
In combination with the scissors, the spring In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my arranged between the interior opposite faces hand this 1st day of March, 1881.
