E. O. BARETTE.
GARTER.
APPLICATION HLED FEB. l2. 1915.

GARTER.
raoaaea,
Specification f Letters Patent.
Aplilieatin filed February 1a, 1915 serial no. 7,741.
To all whom itlmag/ concern: Y
Be it known that I, ERNEST OcrAvn BARETTE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at No. 301,515. J ames street, Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my present invention is a new and improved garter .which Vadjusts itself automatically to the thickness of the leg and` also to all the movements of the leg of the wearer.
A further improvement of my new garter consists in attaining the above mentioned purpose without formingfoldsin any part of the ribbon of the garter and without exerting different stress on the diiferent sides of the garter.
The essential featuresof my invention, which allow the obtaining of such advantages, are the arrangements of articulating joints in the garter, and of a triangular loop at the top of the members holding the stockings, said triangular loop being formed by passing the part of the ribbon near the one end of same through eyelets at the other end of the ribbon and at the top of the member holding the stocking, and then back to the main part of the garter.
In order to more clearly disclose the construction, operation, and* use of the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of the present application.
Throughout the several figures of the.
drawings like reference characters designate the same parts.
In the drawings: Figure 1` shows my new garter in the position which it assumes in the case of a comparatively thick leg; Fig. 2 shows it in the position for a thinner leg; and Fig. 3 shows it in practical use as put on a leg and holding a stocking.
My improved garter is made preferably of an elastic ribbon 1 one end of which forms a loop 2 for the rough adjustment to the thickness of the leg of the wearer, which is done by passing first the ribbons between the inner and the two outer stays or legs of a three-legged eyelet 3, then through a two legged eyelet 4; and then fastening the end itself on the. middle-stay of the eyelet 3. The other stay of the two-legged eyelet 4L bears a flap 5 to be fastened on. a flap 6 by means of `a snap button 7 such as is commonly used for gloves and Aother clothing. On the other side of thegarter the'ribbon l on a reinforcing cross-stay 8 bears a knob 9 and the ribbon passes through the rectangular opening of a two-legged eyelet 10, which is fastened on `the aforementioned iiap 46. Then it passes downwardly through the rectangular opening of another twojlegged eyeletpl?, fastened onthe members holding thestockings, and finally returns again upwardly tothemain part or belt of the garter on-which it is fastened with a suitable eye 13 onthe knob 9, sc as to allow a swinging around this knob.
The membersl for holding the stocking may be of any suitable construction; in the example shown they consist of a short ribbon 14 with a button 15 at its end and a bent-wire snare 16, the upper broader part`7 of which allows the passing through of the head of the button with the upper brim of the stocking 17 to be held, while the lower end of this snare is made narrower so as to vprevent the head of the button and the brim of the stocking from slipping out.
In the use of my garter it is iirst adjusted roughly to the thickness of the leg of the wearer by a corresponding adjustment of the loop 2; then it is passed around the leg and the snap-button 7 is closed; then the brim of the stocking 17 is fastened by putting it over the button 15 and slipping both together into the narrow part of the snare 16, so that the whole has a position as indicated in Fig. 3. If the leg is somewhat thicker and the tension of the stockings not very great, then the self-adjusting parts of my garter will form a flat triangle such as shown in Fig. 1; if the leg is thinner and the tension of the stocking greater, which, for instance, will happen if the garter is put on the leg at a somewhat higher place than in the first case, then the self-adjusting parts of my garter form a more prolongated or pointed triangle such as shown in Fig. 2. The articulations formed by the snap-buttons 7 and by the knob 9 together with the free sliding of the ribbon 1 through the eye lets 10 and l2 insure a perfect adjustment of my garter to the requirements of the special case'p so that the orining of folds in it, un-

due stress at the one or the other side of same and pressing on the leg of the wearer are avoided. f
It is thought that the construction, operation, and use of the invention will be clear from the preceding detailed description.
Changes may be made in the construction, arrangement, and disposition of the several parts of the invention without in any way departing from the field and .scope of the same, and it is meant to include all such within this application wherein only a preferred form has'been disclosed. i
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a garter, a main belt having an eye at one end and a knob on which said eye fits detachably and pivotally, forming a loop, in combination with an eyelet, through which said loop freely slides, at the end of said vloop remote from said knob and eye, a flap. attached to this eyelet, a two-legged passes and hose supporting means suspended from this latter loop, said knob and snapbutton permitting pivotal motion of the parts connected thereby as set forth.
2. The main belt of a garter having one end detachably and pivotally connected to a point on said belt to form a loop, the other end being provided with means for taking up and expanding said belt, an eyelet through which said loop passes freely, detachable and pivotal means for connecting said expansible means to said eyelet, another eyelet through which the lower part of said loop passes freely and hose suspending means depending from this latter eyelet, the said freedom of movement of the loop of the belt through the latter two eyelets and the Ypivotal attachments at two points as above stated permitting Said loop to take the forln of a triangle having automatically adjustl able sides and being adapted to descend and assume more acute angles when the belt is tightened. eyelet and a three-legged eyelet engaging the other end of said belt for tightening or i loosening the latter, a Hap connected to one of these two eyelets, a snap-button detach;
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my @hand in the presence of two witnesses. ERNEST ocTAvE BARETTE.
