To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM E. YOUNG- QUIST and SVEN A. HOLMQUIST, a citizen of the United States and a subject of the King of Sweden, respectively, residing atMinneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State and useful Improvements in Cabinet Makers Clamps; and we do herebydeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it.
appertains to make and use the same.
, Our invention has for its object to provide a simple and highly efiicient cabinet makers clamp; and to such end, generally stated, such invention consists of the novel devices and combination of devices, hereinafter defined and described in the claims.
The improved clampis capable of a wide range of use, but it is especially adapted for use in the cabinetmakers work for clamping of panels and the like in shape. It is of such a nature that it will hold a multiplicity of panel forming boards, for eX- in truealinement, while at the same time press the edges thereofinto tight en,- gagement.
The preferred form of the improved clamp is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout their several .views.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 shows the improved clamp in side elevation applied to clamped together; boards of a wooden panel; Fig. 2is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the clamp showing the same as opened up; Fig. 4: is a detail in section on the line m m in section onthelinem m of Fig. 3.
The improved clamp comprises four main clamping elements, to wit: ftwo clamping bars 1-2 and two clamping heads 3-4. The clamping bars 1-5-2 on their outer edges are formed with ratchet-like notches 5. The bar 1 is considerably longerthan the bar'2 and, at one extreme end, is provided with a rigidly secured so-called thrust-head 6. The clamping head 3 is mountedto slide on the bar 1 between the head 6 and the adjacent end of the front clamping bar 2. The clamping bar2, at its free end, is provided with a ratchet-like notch 7 which is covered b a re a g carries 5914d a one e is provided with of Fig. 8; and Fig. 5 is a detail.
gagement throughthe thrust-headli, and, at its inner end, is swiveled to the clamping head 3, while, at its outer end, it is provided with a suitable hand-piece, shown as in the form of a wheel 10. Obviously, by rotation of the clamping-screw 9, the head 3 may be positively moved in either direction.
The clamping heads is in the form of a yoke and embraces both of the clamping bars 1 and 2, the slot therein being of such extent that the clamping bars 'may, be opened up or separated for the purposeof applying the clamp to a panel or removing the same therefrom. The clamping head f two U-shaped or bail-like anchor links 11 and 12, both thereof as shown, having their prongs pivotally connected to the sides of said head by screws or headed studs 18. These anchor links 11 are yieldingly pressed toward each other by light'springs 14, shown as anchored to the sides of said head 4, by screws 15. Here it will be noted that the long clamping bar 1 is considerably wider than the clamping bar 2. For this reason, the anchor link 11, which engages with the notches of the said bar 1, is made longer than the anchor link 12 which engages with the notches of the bar 2, so that when the clamp is applied, as shown in Fig. 1, the axis of the common pivot 13 will be midway betweenthe adjaquently, will be held at a right-angle to the said bars.
An anchorlink 16 of U-shaped or baillike form has its prongs pivoted to the sides of the thrust-head 6 at 17 and its free portion engaged with the notch 7 in the adjacent end of the short clamping bar 2. The spring 8 prevents the link 16 from being accidentally disengaged from the notch 7', but permits the application or. removal thereof when the said link is'intentionally forced against the spring. Here it is important to note that the pivotal connection 17 between the'anchor link 16 and head 6 is offset laterally from the inner edge of the clamping bar 1, the same distance that the notch 7 is offset from the inner edge of the chor link 16 equalizes the lateral drawing action 911 the two clamping bars, when the bar 2. This oblique arrangement of the an-' j 7 two clamping heads 13 and 14' are forced against the work or panel Y, (Figs. 1 and 2) by adjustment of the clamping-screw 9. Obviously, when the clamp is applied, as shown in Fig. 1, the two clamping heads will be forced against the edge of the panel, while the two clamping bars will be pulled laterally against the sides of the panel, thereby keeping the boards of the sections thereof properly alined. Preferably, the anchor links 11, 12 and 16 have anangle to the clamping edges of the bars 1 and 2 which is much less thaneo degrees, so that .the clamping force of the heads 3 and 1 on the panel will be much greater than the lateral clamping action thereon of the two clamping bars 1 and 2.
For extended engagement with the panel or work, the clamping head 4 is provided with projecting clamping lugs 19, and, for the same reason, the clamping head 3 is provided withprojecting clamping lugs 20. To afford clearancefor the anchor link 16, the said lugs 20 are provided with notches 21. (See Fig. 4-). To look the anchor link 13 to the bar 1, while the work is being applied, and before the clamping bar 2 is clamped down, a small lock-dog 22 is shown as pivoted to one side of one end of the clamping head 4: in position to be turned,
into engagement with the said link 11, as shown in Fig. 1. Preferably, and as shown, the extended ends of the two clamping bars 1 and 2 are connected by a toggle 18. This toggle keeps the two bars always connected and, at the same time, permits all of the required relative movements of the one in respect to the other, but, nevertheless, is not an absolutely essential element and, in many instances, may be dispensed with.
The clamp described has, in practice, been found to be highly efficient for the purposes had in view. It'may be quickly applied to the work or removed therefrom and, furthermore, it is universally adjustable to the work, such as panels, regardless of Whether the panels are of constant thickness, that is have parallel faces, or whether they are tapered, that is have flaring'faces.
What we claim is:
' l. A clamping device comprising cooperating clamping bars, one thereof having 7 an adjustable clamping head and means for moving the same thereon, a second clamping head, having means for adjustably anchoring'the same to both and a device for detachably anchoring the ends of the said two clamping bars.
2. A clamping device comprising cooperating clamping bars, one thereof having a fixed thrust-head and sliding clamping head, a clamping-screw adjustably connect ing said clamping head to said'thrust head,
a second clamping head having means for adjustably anchoringthe same to'both clamping bars,
thrust-head, a second head, having means for adjustably anchoring the same to both of said clamping bars, and an oblique link detachably connecting the thrust-head end of the one clamping bar to the free end of the other clamping bar.
4. A clamping device comprising. cooperating clamping bars, having notched outer edges, one of said bars having a fixed thrusthea'd'and a sliding clamping head, the other bar terminating short of said head and having a link engaging detail, a cla-mping-screw connecting said thrust-head to said clamping head, an anchor link pivoted to said thrust-head and detachably engageable with the detent of the other clamping bar, obliquely across the inner edges of bot-h clamping bars, a second clampinghead slidably mounted on both clamping bars with clearance permitting the said bars to be separated by annular movement, and anchor links pivoted to the said second clampinghead and detachably engageable with the notches of the said two clamping bars.

A clamping device comprising cooperating clamping bars, having notched outer edges, one of said bars having a fixed thrusthead and a sliding clamping head, the other bar terminating short of said clamping head and having a link engaging detail, a clamping-screw connecting said thrust-head to said clamping head, an anchor link pivoted to said thrust-head and detachably engageable with the detent of the other clamping bar, obliquely across the inner edges of both clamping bars, a second clamping head slidably mounted on both clamping bars with clearance permitting the said bars to be separated by annular movement, anchor links pivoted to the said second clamping head and detachably engageable with the notches of the said two clamping bars, and springsyieldingly pressing the anchor links of said second clamping head toward each other.
6. A clamping device comprising coopperating clamping bars, having notched outer edges, one of said bars having a fixed thrust-head and a sliding clamping head,
the other bar terminating short of said clamping head and having a link engaging detail, a clamping-screw connecting said thrust-head to said clamping head, an anchor link pivoted to said thrust-head and detachably engageable'with the detent of the otherclaniping ban-obliquely across the clamping I inner edges of both clamping bars, a second clamping head siidably mounted on both clamping bars with clearance permitting the said bars to be separated by annular movement, anchor links pivoted to the said sec ond clamping head and detachably engageabie with the notches of the said two clamping bars, and a lock-dog on the said second clamping head engageable with one of the said anchor links thereof to hold the same interlocked with a notch of the said c1amping bar and the said thrust-head.
7. A clamping device comprising cooperating clamping bars, one thereof having an adjustable clamping head and means for the said two clamping bars, and a toggle connecting the extended ends of the said two clamping bars.
