Description

EDGAR SIDE.
Ilrprovevmehtirj Necktie FaSteners.
No. 120,000. I Pat'emed Npv. 7,1871.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDGAR SIDE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW' YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN NECK-TIE FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,600, dated November 7, 1871.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR SIDE, of the city of Brooklyn, Kings county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Device for Fastening Neck-Ties; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and. eX- act description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, ref erence being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specication.
This invention relates to a cheap and efficient device for fastening neck-ties; and consists of pieces of steel or other metal suitably shaped and secured together as to form jaws to open and shut so as to close over the shirt-button or stud, thereby forming a neat, easy, and secure fastening for all neck-ties, the jaws to be kept closed upon said button or stud by means of a spring. This device is made to attach to the neck-tie by means of hooks, thereby enabling the wearer to easily adjust it to any neck-tie; or holes may be made in the plates by which to sew them to the neck-tie, if desired.
In the accompanying drawing, A A are two jaws with holes in the inner edges to admit the shank of the button or stud, and are curved at the top ends to prevent their entering the button-hole. B B are hooks by which to fasten the device to the neck-tie. C C are handles or levers, the use of which is to open the jaws when in the act of adjusting the fastener and neck-tie to the neck. D is a spring to keep the jaws closed. The jaw A, the hooks B B, and the handle G are in one piece, and the jaw A', handle C', and spring D are in another piece, the two pieces being jointed at E, so that when the handles are pressed together the jawswill open, and when released from such pressure the spring D, attached to the handle G and acting against the opposite handle (l, causes the jaws to close and thereby hold securely to the shank of the button or stud.
The manner of using my invention is as follows: Secure the neck-tie to the fastener by forcing the hooks B B into the back or inner side of the neck-tie or by sewing the same to the fastener through the holes for such purpose provided. When this is done press the handles C C together in order to open the jaws A A', and
`while so held pass the top of the fastener upward until the shank of the button or stud comes between the jaws and opposite one or other of the holes in edges of the same, when, upon letting go'the handles, the jaws will close upon the shank of the button or stud and in this way hold the neck-tie securely in a proper position.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a neck-tie fastener, constructed as shown and described.
The vabove specification of my invention signed by me this Llth day of May, 1871.
