ANDREW J. EARLY, OF MERRIMAC MINES, VIRGINIA.
LOCK.
Application filed May 26, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, ANDREW J. EARLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Merrimac Mines, in the county of Montgomery and State of Virginia, ave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to locks and has for its primary object to provide a. lock especially designed for use in connection with doors and including a pivoted latch element and key controlled means for locking the latch element in locked position.
Another object is the provision of novel and eflicient means for actuating the lock frnn either side of the door.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing. in which:
Figure 1 represents a front elevation of the improved lock, illustrating the same applied to use upona door. Fig. 2 represents a top plan view of the lock, illustrating the door in section. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of the lock. Fig. t represents a vertical central sectional view therethrough. Fig. 5 represents a side elevation, partly in section, of the locking element for the latch element removed. Fig. 6 represents a perspective view of the latch element removed from the casing, and Fig. 7 represents a side ele ation of the key removed.
, Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 indicates generally the casing of the lock, which is preferably provided with a removable front or cover plate 11 and the side walls thereof are formed with apertures rotatably receiving a shaft 12 forming part of the latch element which also includes an enlarged end 13 having an angular extension 14 provided with a head 15. The angular end let of the latch element is disposed exteriorly of the casing 10 and carries a relatively non-rotatable plate 16 disposed Within the casing and adapted to engage the front and rear walls of the latter to limit the rocking movement Specification of Letters Patent.

of the shaft 12,and the angular latch arm 14. A spring 17 is suitably secured in the casing 10 and is engaged at its free end with the plate 16 below the shaft 12 and normally retains the latch arm 14- in clownwardly extended or locked position.
A locking element or tumbler 25 is r0- tatably mounted in the front and rear walls of the casing 10 laterally of the lower portion of the plate 16 and is provided with a lateral enlargement 26, adapted to engage beneath the lower edge of the plate 16 to lock the latter against swinging movement when the latch arm 14: is engaged beneath the keeper 21. The tumbler 25 is controlled by a key 27 adapted to be inserted in either of the recesses 28 formed in the opposite ends of the body of the tumbler 25. The tumbler is frictionally held in adjusted position by the tension of a spring 29, the free ends of which are secured at 30 to the casing 10 and the medial portion is looped about and frictionally engaged with the lateral projection or enlargement 26.
A locking bar 32 is pivotally secured at 33 to the cover plate 11 and is provided with a notch 34 in its free end adapted to receive the enlarged extremity 13 of the locking element to lock the latter against rotational movement.
What I claim is:
1'. A look including a casing, a plate mounted in said casing, a shaft rotatably mounted in said casing extending through the longitudinal center of said plate and non-rotatably secured thereto. one end .of said shaft being enlarged and directed angularly to provide a latch arm. a head on said latch arm,a pair of oppositely directed push rods pivotally secured to said plate and extending exteriorly of said casing, means normally retaining said latch arm in locked position, and key controlled means for looking said latch element in locked position.
2. A lock including a casing, a plate arranged in said casing, a shaft rotatably mounted in said casing, extending through the longitudinal center of said plate and being non-rotatably secured to the latter, one end of said shaft exteriorly of said casing being enlarged to provide a latch arm, a head on said latch arm, push rods connected with said plate and extending exteriorly of said casing, a tumbler rotatably mounted in said casing at right angles to said shaft having a lateral enlargement adapted, when swung inwardly, to engage behind said plate to lock the latter in adjusted position, and a spring loop secured to said casing engaged about the enlarged portion of said tumbler for retaining the latter in adjusted position. In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
