To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ORA L. LANCE, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cigar or Cigarette Cases, of which the'following is a specification. I

The present invention relates to improvements in cigar and cigarette cases, the Ol)]60t of the invention being to provide such a case of simple and inexpensive construction having a device for holding the cigars or cigarettes in a position for withdrawal by the smoker;

Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates a blank from which a side of the cigarettelar hole 3 near the opposite side, said holes 2 and being spaced apart a distance substantially equal to the length of the hole 2,

and the hole 3 being also at a distance from its nearer side a little greater than the length of the hole 2. Each blank is first bent so as to have curved margins, as shown in Fig.

'12, by means of two dies 4 and 6. The blank is then inverted, as shown in ig; 13, and placed upon a female. die 7 of such shape, as

shown at 8, as to formhinges 9 in the end in which the holes are formed, and a male die lO is then placed over the blank, and, by pressure of the male die, the middle portion of'said blank is inverted, or turned inside out, the convex side thereof becoming concave, as shown in Fig. 13. There is thus formed around each side of the case a rim l1, bent outwardly and back upon itself. This result could not be obtained by a direct bending outwardly and backwardly upon itself of the marginal portion of the concave side of the case, for, by such an operation, the metal of the margin would be broken or torn apart. The sameefi'ect, however, is produced by my improved process by retaining said marginal portion unchanged, and turning the middle portion of the case inside out. This method of form- I ing a rim on a concave article is believed, to

be new.

The parts 5 and 12' respectively between half of the cigarette case are, by this process, formed into knuckles, and the holes 2 and 3 of said halves are adapted to receive the knuckles 5 and 12 of the other halves, as clearly shown in, Fig. 15. The longer holes 3, however, are not completely filled by the knuckles 5, and the unfilled parts 13 (Fig. 15) are used to secure to the cigarette case a holder 14:. Said holder consists of two U- shaped sections 16, 17 which, "to hold them together, are formed with pairs of knuckles 18, 19 and a hingepin 21 is passed; through the two pairs of knuckles 18 and 19 to pivot the two sections together. The section 17 is also extended to form a bearing 22 which surrounds the hinge pin 23 of the cigarette case, said bearing being formed with a tail 24, A spring 26 is coiled around the hinge Patented Oct. 17, 191

and at the side of the holes 2 and 3, in each pin 23, and one end bears against the section 16 and the other end against the inner surface of the adjacent half of the cigarette case, thus pressing said section 16 toward the section 17 and holding securely cigarettes placed between said sections. The free ends of the U-shaped sections are bent first inward, as shown at 27, to form retainers for the cigarettes, and then outward, as shown at 28, to facilitate the insertion of the cigarettes into the holder.

The holder tends to remain in contact with one side of the cigarette case, by reason of the pressure of the coiled spring, as shown in Fig. 7. But when the cigarette case is opened sufficiently wide the holder is raised to a central position, as shown in Fig. 8, by pressure against the tail 24 by the narrow portion 29 between the hole 3 and the adjacent end of one of the blanks.

I claim 1. In an article of the character described, in combination with two case sections each having knuckles and holes to receive the knuckles of the other case section, a hinge pin' extending through said knuckles, and a holder consisting of two sections hinged together, one of said holder sections being extended to form a knuckle, fitting closely around, and vibratable on, said hinge pin.

2. In an article of the character described, in combination with two case sections hinged together to form a case, a holder within the case consisting of two sections hinged together, and a spring acting to press the two holder sections together and against one of the case sections.

3. In an article of the character described, in combination with two case sections hinged together to form a case, a holder Within the knuckles of the other case section, a holder consisting of two sections hinged together, one of said holder sections being extended to form a knuckle, a hinge pin extending through said knuckle and the knuckles of the case sections and a spring coiled around said hinge pin, and of which one end bears against the other holder section and the other end bears against the adjacent case section. v

5. In an article of the character described, in combination with two case sections hinged together to form a case, a holder within the case consisting of two sections hinged to gether, one of the holder sections being ex tended outside the case, a case section having an outer-portion located to engage said extended portion of the holder to move the holder with reference to the case.

In an article of the character described, in combination with two case sections hinged together to form a case, a holder consisting of two sections hinged together, one of said holder sections being hinged coaxially with the case, one of the holder sections being extended outside the case, a case section having an outer portion located to engage said extended portion of the holder tomove the holder with reference to the case.

7 In an article of the character described, in combination with two case sections each having knuckles and holes to receive the knuckles of the other case section, a holder consisting of two sections hinged together, one of said holder sections being extended to form. a knuckle, a hinge pin extending through said knuckle and the knuckles of the case sections, said holder section being extended beyond said knuckle to form a bearing, a case section having an outer portion located to engage said extended portion of the holder to move the holder with reference to the case.

8. In an article of the character described, in combination with two case sections each having knuckles and holes to receive the knuckles of the other case section, a holder consisting of two sections hinged together, one of said holder sections being extended to form a knuckle, a hinge pin extending through said knuckle and the knuckles of the case sections, said holder section being extended beyond said knuckle to form a bearing, a case section having an outer portion located to engage said extended portion of the holder to move the holder with reference to the case, and a spring coiled around said hinge pin, and of which one end bears against the other holder section and the other end bears against the corresponding case section.

9, In an article of the character described, in combination with two case sections each having knuckles and holes to receive the knuckles of the other case section, a holder having sides which can be spread apart and one of which is extended to form a knuckle, a hinge pin extending through said knuckle and the knuckles of the case sections and a spring coiled around said hinge pin, and of which one end bears against the holder and the other end bears against the adjacent case section.
