SMOKERS IMPLEMENT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY E. Hess, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Im provements in Smokers Implements, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to smokers implements, and is intended to provide a simple and durable device which will be useful for tamping the tobacco in a pipe and for cleaning out the pipe bowl, and which may be folded flat and thus adapted to be conveniently carried in the pocket of the user. The device may also be utilized as an advertising novelty, if desired.

My invention is illustrated in the accompaying drawings, in which Figures 1 and 2 are side and edge elevations, respectively, of one form of the device, Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6 are detail views further illustrating the same, Fig. 7 is an elevation of a modified form of the device, and Fig. 8 is a detail view of a portion of the device shown in Fig. 7.

The form of the device illustrated in Figs. 1 to 6 of the drawings comprises a flat shank 2, preferably stamped from sheet metal, and a disk-like head 3 connected to one end of the shank by means of a spring hinge so arranged that the head may be folded flat against the shank, as shown in Fig. 2, or caused to extend at right angles thereto, as shown in Fig. 1. Any suitable form of spring hinge may be employed, the form shown in Figs. 1 to 6 consisting of a lug 4. projecting at right angles from one face of the head 3 and located between two projections 5 at one end of the shank 2, with a pintle 6 passing through said lug and proections, and with a flat spring 7 secured at one end to the shank 2 and bearing at its free end on the lug 4. The head 3 will be held with sufficient firmness in either of the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2 by the pressure of the spring 7 on one or another of the flat faces of the lug, according to the position occupied by the head with relation to the shanks The head 3 is circular in out line and is hinged on a diametrical line to the end of the shank 2, its diameter being equal to the width of the shank, so that when the head is turned fiat against the Specification of Letters Patent.

shank one half of the head will extend beyond the end of the shank and continue the lines of the edges thereof, thus adapting the device to be inserted into the bowl of a pipe and used as a scraper to clean out the bowl, while when the head is held at right angles to the shank the device is adapted to be used to tamp the tobacco in the pipe bowl. \Vhen used as a scraper, the combined head and shank provide a continuous scraping edge eX- tcnding uninterruptedly along the sides of the shank and around the projecting edge of the head, thus making its possible to bring the scraping edge into contact with the interior of the bowl along the entire surface of the latter. That part of the head 3 which projects beyond the edge of the shank when said head is folded flat against the shank is preferably concave on its upper side, as shown at 8, thus forming a sort of spoon or scoop which is serviceable for cleaning out the bottom of the pipe bowl. The opposite end of the shank is preferably provided with a hole 9 so that the device may be attached to a key ring or the like, and. the flat shank may have any desired ornamentation or inscription placed thereon, as indicated at 10, or the inscrip tion may consist of an advertisement so that the device is Well suited to serve as an advertising novelty. It may also be conveniently carried in the pocket of the user, since when the head 3 is folded against the shank 2 the entire device becomes substantially flat and has but little thickness.

In Figs. 7 and 8 I have shown a modified form of the device, in which the shank 2 is made of spring wire bent to form two substantially parallel side members the free ends of which are located between upstanding lugs a secured to the head 3 at opposite ends of a diamctrical line, to which lugs the respective ends of the side members are hinged by means of pivot pins 6'. The end portions of said members are caused to exert a constant spring pressure outward, or toward the inner faces of the lugs 4t and are slightly grooved to receive ribs 11 formed on the inner faces of said lugs when the head 3 is arranged at right angles to the length of the shank, whereby a spring hinge is provided for maintaining the parts in this position. In this form of the device, the head 3' may be folded against the shank on either side of the latter, and either or both halves of the head may be concaved to serve as a scoop.

I claim as my invention:

1. A device of the character described, comprising a flat shank and a disk-like head centrally hinged to one end of the shank and adapted to be located at right angles to the length of the shank or folded flat against one side of said shank, and a spring to maintain the head in either of said positions.

2. A device of the character described, comprising a shank and a disk-like head centrally hinged along a diametrical line to one end of the shank and adapted to be located at right angles thereto or folded flat against the same, said head being concaved on its upper side to provide a scraping edge, and a spring to hold the head in either of said positions.

3. A device of the character described, comprising a fiat shank, a circular head hinged to one end of the shank along a diametrieal line, the diameter of said head being equal to the Width of the shank Whereby one-half of the head is adapted to form a continuation of the edges of the shank when folded against the same, and a spring adapted to hold the head either at right angles to the length of the shank or in its folded position against the same.
