F. A. STEVENS. SPECTAOLE FRAME.
Patented Mar. 16, 1897.
Ink/ENTER:
. a; n I WITNESSES F 5 NITE FREDERICK A. STEVENS, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE PROVIDENCE OPTICAL COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
SPECTACLE=FRAM E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,099, dated March 16, 1897. Application filed September 30, 1895 Serial No. 564,198. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, FREDERICK A. STEVENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spectacle-Frames, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in the improved construction of the joint-piece, which serves to connect the temple-arm with the eye-frame, as hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a pair of spectacles provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 represents an enlarged rear view of one of the eye-frames with the joint-pieces attached. Fig. 3 represents a top view of the same. Fig. 4 represents an enlarged inner side view of the cup which forms the covering-shell of the filling of the joint-piece. Fig. 5 represents an edge view of the same. Fig. 6 represents an enlarged view of the inner side of the fill ing of the joint-piece. Fig. 7 represents an edge View of the same. Fig. 8 represents an enlarged section of the joint-pieces, taken in the line 8 8 of Fig. 3.
In the drawings, Arepresents the spectaclefrarne, B the temple-arm, and C C the jointpieces the said joint-pieces being formed by striking up a cup-formed sh ell a and a fillingpiece I), which is adapted to enter the covering-shell a and is preferably provided with a rabbeted edge I). The filling-piece b is to be placed in the shell a and the edges of the shell turned upon the edge 1/ of the filling, asshown in Fig. 8.
The outer portion of the surface 0 of the filling-piece b is depressed at c, and a corresponding portion 11 0f the edge of the shell a is cut away or made lower, as shown in the edge View, Fig. 5, so that when the two jointpieces C C are placed together, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, a space 6 will be formed between them to receive the perforated ear of the temple-arm B. After the shell to has been secured to the filling-piece b a notch d is cut in its edge to receive the eye-frame f, as shown in Fig. 3.
The shell on may be made of gold or gold plate, and thus effect a desirable saving in the cost of gold-bowed spectacles, the said shell being secured to the base-n1etal filling-piece by being pressed inwardly over the edge of the same in a suitable manner. I claim as my invention-- In a pair of spectacles, the joint-pieces formed with a filling-piece having the outer portion of its inner surface depressed, and a corresponding shell having its edge turned over the edge of the filling-piece, whereby the filling-piece and shell are secured to each other, substantially as described.
