IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-TIGHTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,010, dated October 17, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM E. SWETT, of city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improved Sash- Tightener and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawing are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or scienceto which it mostnearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvements without further invention or experiment.
My invention relates to a simple device to be fixed to the sash-frame of a window, so as to bind against the casing and prevent the sash from being rattled by the wind, and to keep out dust; and it consists of a metal or other plate, one side of which is secured to the sash, while a spring beneath it keeps the opposite side pressing against the parting-strip, so as to hold the sash-frame snugly against the opposite strip.
In order to more fully illustrate and explain my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- A represents a windowi'rame and B the sashframe. At some convenient point, in one or more places, along the inside of the sash-frame B, I secure a metal or other plate, a, in the following manner: One side of this plate I confine against the sash by means of screws d, which are screwed in loosely, so that the opposite side of the plate will move up and down. Beneath the plate, either at the center or at some other suitable point, I place a spiral or other spring, 0, which may be set in arecess. A screw, f, passes through the plate, and also through the spring 6 into the sash, which serves to support the spring and keep it in place.
This spring keeps one side of the plate 0 pressed outward from the sash, so that when the sash is placed in the window-flame the plate will press against the partingstrip g and force the sash against the opposite strip with sufficient force to prevent rattling and keep out the dust.
This device is quite simple and cheap, and will not interfere with any of the ordinary window fixtures. The sash can be moved up and down with ease, as the spring will allow the plate to yield without binding the sash.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The plate 0, hinged or otherwise loosely secured at one side to the window-sash frame, in combination with the spring 6, substantially as and for the purpose above described.
In witness that the above-described invention is claimed by me I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
