AIR VALVE FOR GAS-ENGINES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. GRoUNDs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county ofCook, and State of'Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Valves for Gas-Engines, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has relation to the provision of simple and effective means for admitting air to the fuel manifold of an internal combustion engine in such quantities as may be'found necessary to secure as complete a combustion as possible of the fuel.
I am aware that the ordinary makes of carbureters at present upon the market have both manually adjustable and automatic instrumentalities for graduating the amount of fuel and air supplied to the cylinders of an internal combustion engine, but, because of wear in use and also because'ofan initial failure to secure a proper adjustment, it is not at all uncommon and, in fact, it is the general rule that the charges received by the engine cylinders are improperly proportioned in fuel and air.
As will be seen from the following specification, my present device is auxiliary to the carbureter and is designed to be attached to the fuel intake manifold which distributes the charge from the carbureter to the cylinder, or cylinders if a plurality of cylinders are employed, of the integral combustion engine. By reason of the positioning of my device between the carbureter and the cylinder or cylinders, the adjustment and operation or functioning of any particular portion. of the carbureter is not interfered with directly, and, again, when hot air is used in the carbureter to assist in vaporizing the fuel, the additional amount of air admitted through my device may be entirely unheated, which will assist in keeping the cylinders cool without interfering with the vaporization of the fuel which takes place in the carbureter. It will be readily appreciated that such a device must contain or comprise means for nicely and accurately controlling the amount of air so introduced.
The objects of my invention are the provision, in as simple a form as possible, of means for securing the introduction of fresh air to the fuel intake manifold of an internal combustion engine; means for accurately regulating the amount of air so introduced; means for positively locking the adjustment Specification of Letters Patent. 7

of the device so that the severe vibrations incident to the operation of internal combustion engines and, especially, when such an engine is used in a motor vehicle on ordinary roads, will not disturb the adjustment; and means for positively closing the device and discontinuing its operation entirely when atmospheric and other conditions permit of its use being so discontinued.
I prefer to accomplish the divers objects of my invention by substantially the means and in the manner hereinafter fully described and as more particularly pointed out in the claims, reference now being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which,

Referring to the drawings, in which similar reference characters are employed to designate the same parts throughout the divers views, it will be observed my device preferably comprises a hollow or tubular stub 5, one end whereof is provided with a slightly tapered exteriorly threaded portion 6 which is adapted to be screwed into a suitably tapped aperture provided in the intake or fuel manifold of an internal combustion engine. Above the threaded portion 6 just referred to, is an annular enlargement 7 ,of preferably hexagonal conformation in transverse section, to facilitate the use of a -wrench thereon when introducing and assembling the device with the threaded aperture in the manifold. Above the annular enlargement 7 the stub 5 is cylindrical in shape and exteriorly threaded at 8 tothe end thereof, and in its periphery are provided the semiconical or tapered channels .9, increasing in depth from their points of commencement near the enlargment 7 to the outer or upper end of the cylindrical portion of the stub.
An interiorly threaded washer 10 is provided that is adapted to screw down on the threads on the cylindrical portion, and the threads 8 of the cylindrical portion are cut away at 11' adjacent the enlargement 7, so that the Washer 10 will be free from threaded engagement when it is adjacent said enlargement. An interiorly threaded tubular cap 12 screws down over the threads 8 of the cylindrical portion. It will now be seen that the positioning of the washer 1'0 and the cap 12 longitudinally with respect to the tapered channels '9 will permit of a fine adjustment of the capacity of theopenings provided by the said channels 9, and the mount of air entering therethrough, and that any intermediate positioning of the cap 12 may be locked positively by turning back thewash'er 10 so as to frictionally engage or jam the lower edge of the cap. If
it is desired to entirely-close the device, the
threaded Washer 10 is turned down until it leaves the threads 8 and is positioned upon the upper portion of the enlargement T, whereupon the cap is screwed down until it jams tightly against said washer, thereby closing the tapered channels 9' in the cylindrical portion and preventing any air being admitted to the device therethrough.
While I have herein illustrated and described certain specific instrumentalities for carrying out my invention, it of course will be obvious to others skilled in the art, that divers modifications and alterations may be made without materially departing from the spirit of my invention. I therefore desire it understood that all such changes are contemplated as being included within the scope. of my invention as expressed in the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. An air valve for gas engines comprising a tubular threaded stub that is provided upon its exterior with a plurality of semiconical channels extended longitudinally of said stub and open at the end of said stub, an interiorly threaded cap cooperating with the threads of said stub to control thecross-sectional capacity and operative length of said semiconical channels,
and a threaded lock washer adapted to cooperate respectively with said stub and said cap.
2. An air valve for gas engines comprising a tubular threaded stub that is provided upon its exterior with a channel extended longitudinally of said stub and open Copies of this patent may be obtained for prising a tubular threaded stub that is provided upon its exterior with a channel extended longitudinally of said stub of 'progressively increasing depth, an interiorly threaded cap cooperating with the threads of said stub to control the cross-sectional capacity and operative length of said channel, and a threaded lock washer adaptedto cooperate respectively with said stub and said cap.

An air valve for gas engines comprising a tubular stub, a central enlargement having an angular conformation, an- -annular groove surrounding said stub ad-' Jacent said enlargement, threads provided on said stub between said groove and the end of said stub,-said threaded portion having a progressively increasing longitudinally disposed channel therein, a threaded washer cooperating with saidthread's and of a width to be accommodated by said groove, and an interiorly threaded cap adapted to cooperate with the threads of said stub and said washer.
5. An air valve for gas engines comprisingpa tubular stub, a central enlargement having an angular conformation, an annular groove surrounding said stub adjacent said enlargement, threads provided on said stub between said grooveand the end of said stub, said threaded portion having a plurality of progressively increasing longitudinally disposed channels therein, a threaded washer cooperating with said threads and of a width to be accommodated by said groove, and an interiorly threaded cap adapted to cooperate with the threads of said stub and said washer.
