HERBERT AUSTIN, or BRoMsGnovE, ENGLAND.
Specification .01 Letters Patent.
' christian-rare Patented Jan. 2o, 1-914.
Amman filed July 25, 1913. j serial No. asides.-
To all whom it may concern. 4
'Be it known that I, Hansna'r Aos'rm, a subject of the King of GreatBrit-ain, and residing at Bromsgrove, in the county of 'orccster, England, engineer, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Carburetors for Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification. 4 a
This invention relates to the type of carbureterin which a cylindrical valve, withinwhich the jet nojzzle issituated, is'utilized as a throttle for the combustible mixture to the engine and as a control device for the jet nozzle; and has for its main'object, improve-- ments .whereby the best results may be ob-: tained as to the richnessof the mixture for variations in the throttle. opening, and wherebyindependent adjustment of a con-' troldevice for the nozzle may. beeifected without dismantling any portion of the apparatus.
In orderthat the invention may be clearly understood, Iwill now describe a convenient application thereof by referenceto the drawings herewith, of which 2- Figure 1 is a vertical section, taken in the plane indicated by line a: a: of Fig. 2, of a carbureter to which the invention is a plied. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, taken in 1 the plane indicated by line 3/ y of Fig. 1, ex-
cept that the fioat=feed apparatus is shown simply in elevation, and ;.F1g. 3 is a detached View of a detail of the apparatus.
Thecarbureter body A is formed with a cylindrical case A, having a horizontal axis, within which is a hollow cylindrical'valv'e B. Both the case A and the valve B are originally formed open at the sides thereof which in use will be toward the float-feed app'aratus C. The outer side 6 of the valve B is formed closed, and the outer side of the case A is formed witha flange a' against which the outer side, of the valve-B abuts. Thevalve B is formed or provided with a spindle b which passes through the opening of the case A which is'slirrounded by'the flange a thereof. A plug D, which is made rigid with the float-feed case, such as by screwing it upon a nipple c of such cas'e,;is passed sidewise into the valve B; Thevalve is just a turning fitbetween the outer surfaceofthe. plug D and'the inner-surface of .the'case A, and a shoulder d of the plug, coming ?against the open end of the valve, main tains the valve in position endwise, ands shoulder at. of the plug abuts a ainst the corresponding end of the case and is tightened therea'gainst" in ,any convenient manner, such as by bolts passing'through lugs of the case and of the plug. A passage (1 of circular transverse section, and of large area, is formed transversely through the middle of the plug D, being, conveniently, somewhat smaller in diameter at its'middle than at its ends-and enlarging gradually from its middle to'the ends, as clearlyshown by Fig. l, and when the valve. is in its fully open position, as shown, ports b b of the valve register, respectively, with the inlet and outlet ends of the passage dfiand put such 'endsin'full communicatio'n'with correspending openings of the' case A for the passage of inlet air and of combustible mixture to the engine, respectively.- -The liquid 'fuel nozzle E stands up from the bottom of vthe middle of the passage (1 to about half valve g, is screwed axially through the slider F, and this in has a common axis with the liquid fuel passes also through a plug'H which closes an opening through the top of the case A through which the pin passes, and the pin is formed at its outerend-with a milled head 9 for convenience. in manipulating it. The
pin G passes through a slot. b which is formed through the wall of the valve B to allow of the valve being turnedi notwithstanding the passage therethrough'of the pin G. e The inner surface b of the portion ofthe valve B through which the slot 6-. is'fformed,
is shaped, as shown, so-th'at asthe" val es turned in the direction of'the arrowlFlg.
- pin G, formed 'at its lower end use needlenozzle E. Thepin G 1), namely inthe-direction tocut oif mixture from the engine, this 'surfa'cfii-"press'ing against a correspondingly-shapedsuriace of the outer end'oftheslider-F, will-moire the slider inward, and thereby cane the:-' 'bedle I lv P els were es e m-.

of, the opening of any degree to which the valve. has been turned, the opening such as to give. the best. result in working.
' Preferably, {the portion of the slider against which the surface' of the valve bears is made considerabl narrower than .the main Fig. 2. The-openings. b and I) through the wall oi the valve B are so-fo'rined that a's'the 7 valve is turned from its position shown by.
