Description

N. STEINHAUSER.
Combined Toilet-Tables and Wash-Stands.
Patented July 16, 1872.
Inventor.
I/WWWIQ ,flm/mk/ZW M Witnesses.
UNITED STATES:
PATENT OFFICE.
NIGHOLAS' STEINHAUSER, OF LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED TOILET-TABLES AND WASH-STANDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,612, dated July 16, 1872.
especially adapted for the sick-room.
The accompanying drawing, with letters of reference marked thereon, clearly illustrate the arrangement of the parts.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the front and one side. Fig. 2 is a modification of my invention with the table elevated and the basin or drawer V attached thereto.
The body of the table A is formed double, having side spaces for the drawers I II on each side; or the space may be shelved and have a hinged door, N, and an open box or drawer, V, on the top on each side, the whole resting upon a base or foot platform, 0, provided with rollers or casters at three points. This base (J also supports a box, B, with a drawer, D, for a spittoon, which can be drawn out from either side. There is also a central basin on B, opening into the spittoon-drawer, designed for a flexible tube connection from the mouth of the patient, (not shown.) The one-sided top M has also two drawers on each side, III and IV, and supports the water tank or cooler G, with its lid J and faucets H, within a box covering the top of the stand of drawers by projecting on the sides of the table-top M over the boxes V on the top of the uprights A, or drawers V attached to the tank G, as shown in Fig. 2. This tank or cross-box G supports a looking-glass, K, on a central pivot, I, on which said glass can be turned to any desired angle. The frame of said glass is also provided with supports L, for a lamp or candle on each side. This combined top M, with the tank. supporting the glass, has a central vertical sliding support or leg, F, which fits into a central open space between the drawers I II and uprights A A, which latter form the back and front of the case of drawers or standard. The edge of the support F is notched or toothed for a springcatch, Q, similar to those used in windowsash to hold them at any desired height, with a spring-button in the rear or front to disengage the same for lowering down, as shown in Fig. 2. In Fig. 1, at F, is shown a rounded notch for a sliding bolt, instead of the toothed edge R, shown in Fig. 2.
Invalids capable of sitting up in bed can be supplied with all the conveniences. By sliding the base 0 under the bed, the top M can be elevated so as to project over the bed, giving ample space for sundry refreshments and articles required in the side drawers. Medicines or refreshments, &c., can also be stored in the lower side drawers, water with ice at hand. The top side boxes V may contain a wash-basin. In short, the utility and convenience of this combination are readily understood, and cannot fail to be appreciated, the eight drawers or shelves and drawer, two boxes, water-tank, spittoon, swivel-glass, altogether, forming a neat and convenient article of furniture, (which may be paneled and ornamented,) apart from its special adaptation for the sick-room.
I am, however, aware that tables for the sick are not new, mounting the top of a folding or extensible table by means of a swiveljoint and sliding standard, or with an adjustable swinging top, capable of projecting over a bed, and steadied by means of an extensible foot; such I do not claim. But I am not aware that any table for the purpose named was ever substantially combined and arranged in the manner shown and specified; therefore,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The standard A A, forming a case for the drawers or shelves I II on each side,'and the top boxes or basins V, with the central open space for the reception of the notched support of the shifting top, incombination with the spittoon-box B D on the projecting on a pivot, P, with its light-holders L, all subba'se (J, all substantially arranged in the manstantially combined and operated in the manner and for the purpose specified. ner and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the foregoing stand- N. STEINHAUSER. ard and its central open space, I claim the vertical notched support F R, the top M, with Witnesses: its side drawers III IV, water-tank G and WM. B. WILEY, appliances, with the looking-glass K mounted JACOB STAUFFER.
