IGNITION-CAP FOR FUSES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 4, 1919.
Application led July 8, 1918. Serial No. 243,799.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Louis V. ARoNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ignition-Caps for Fuses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ignition caps for fuses. In the lighting of fuses attached to bombs and other forms of explosive carrying means it is the present practice to use matches, said practice being exceedingly dangerous and the cause of frequent premature explosions. The ordinary fuse when lighted is consumed for about one inch of its length in approximately two seconds of time, and it will therefore be seen that the lighting of the same by the useof matches must be accomplished with great care and celerity in order to avoid accidents. A further disadvantage in the use of matches for this purpose is the danger of sparks flying from the head of the match and thus causing ignition of adjacent or reserve supply of bombs or other forms of explosives.
The object of my invention is to provide a cap or tip adapted to be carried separate from the fuse and to be, laced over the end of the same when it is esired to io'nite the fuse, the said cap containing at one end thereof ignition and combustion means whereby when placed upon the fuse such ignition end may be ignited by friction, as in the case of an ordinary match head, thus communicating fire to the fuse. A further object of my invention is the provision of a cap or tip of this character which is equipped with means whereby when placed upon the fuse it cannot be accidentall displaced therefrom by jarring, such as t e dropping of the fuse before or after its ignition.
Other objects will be in part obvious from the annexed drawing and in part indicated in connection therewith by the following analysis of this invention.
This invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of parts and in the unique relations of the members and in the relative proportioning and disposition thereof, all as more completely outlined herein.
To enable others skilled in the art so fully to comprehend the underlying features thereof that they may embody the same by the numerous modifications in structure and rclation contemplated by this invention, a drawing depicting a preferred form has been annexed as a part of this disclosure, and in such drawings, like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout all the views, in which Figure 1 is a broken perspective view of a fuse equipped with my improved cap or tip with an ignition head applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of a fuse similarly equipped and,
Fig. 3 a View of a fuse and cap in disassembled relation, the cap being shown without the ignition head.
i designates the ordinary fuse equipped at its lower end with a bag 5, indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawing as containing 'I. N. T. 6 designates a metal cylinder provided between its ends with a series of inwardly extending tangs 7 adapted to permit the cap (i to be slipped over the free end of the fuse and preventing the accidental displacement of the same therefrom, due to the free ends of said tangs impinging against or biting into the body of said fuse in such withdrawal movement. The upper end of the cap 6 is provided with a corrugated surface 8 and over said surface, and filling the upper end of said tip, I provide a combustion material 8', covered with a readily ignitible material 9, the whole treated with a suitable water-proofing solution, all preferably of the materials set forth in Patent No. 1,287,819, issued to me December 17, 1918.
In practice my improved caps or tips will be shipped separate from the fuse, and such caps may be carried in a suitable receptacle in the pocket and when it is desired to ignite the fuse one of said caps is slipped over the end thereof and such equipped end of the fuse is then ignited by friction, as in the case of the ordinary match. As will be seen the side openings in the cap, due to the form of the tangs afford air openings which will assist in the combustion of the fuse.
The corrugations 8 formed in the outer end of the cap constitute an effective seat for the combustion end, the material of which, as will be seen, extends over said ends and in said corrugations, thereby forming a firmer contact than would be the case were such combustion material merely placed in the end of the cap, and preventing the accidental breaking of said mass of material in applying the same to a friction surface to effect its lighting.
By means of my invention the danger of premature ex losions is materially lessened and time is ai'brded after the ignition of the fuse either to place the bomb or to retreat to a. safe position therefrom and before the eX- plosion occurs.
It is believed that from the above it will be seen that the present invention provides e cap of simple and practical construction adapted to accomplish, among others, all of the objects and advantages herein set forth.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An ignition head or cap for fuses and the like, comprising a, hollow member open at one end and `adepted to receive the fuse, and having its opposite end of corrugated form, and closed et said end by a body;r of
ignitible and combustible material extending over said end and filling the corrugations therein.
2. A n ignition head or oap for fuses and the like, comprising a. hollow member open et one end and adapted to receive the fuse, and having its opposite end of corrugated form? and closed at Said end by a body of ignitible and combustible material extending over said end and filling the corrugations therein, and provided with means to prevent its accidental displacement from the fuse.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.V
