FUSE-:LIGHTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 4,1910.
Original application filed April 26, 1909, Serial No. 492,374. Divided and this application filed June 24,
1909. Serial No. 504,196.
To all whom it .concem:
Be itknown-that I, HARRY BARGMAN, a citizen of Russia, residing at 'Los Angeles, in
Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F use-Lighters, of which 1 the following is a specification.
- April- 26, 1909,
This invention has reference to a fuse lighter of the kind described and claimed in.
my co-pending application for patent filed Serial Number 492,374, of which this'application is a division. Anobject of this invention is to provide an ignitible seal for the free end of fuses, which forms an effective covering for the powder in the duct .01 thesame, and also an instantaneous lighting medium for the fuse.
Another object of this invention is to provide' an igniter for fuses which eliminates the necessity of carrying matches and the like into the mines preparatory to setting off a blast charge, and in which the lighting agent for the fuse igniter is self-contained, frictional abrasion alone being necessary to initially combust the inflammable material of which the cap is composed.
lVith these and other objectsi'n view, this invention consists of the features and details as will he described in connection'with the accompanying drawing, and then be more specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing, Figure 1, is a side eleva tion of my improved lighter, and Fig. 2, is a sectional elevation of the same,
Specific reference being bad to the drawing, 1, designates a tubular body of intlam-- mable material adapted to be fittedover the free end of a fuse 2. One end of said tubular body is flattened and scaled together, as
seen at 3, and on the extremity of said fiattened end is placed a composition of mate: rial 4, which 18 ignitible alone by friction.
This composition is essentially a match and serves to ignite the inflammable tubular body -1, and to thereby avoid the use. of direct flames in tunnels and drifts where the accumulation of natural gases would render the presence of, fire dangerous. In mines Where such conditions do not exist, this ignitible tab conveniently saves time when for lighted, torches,
any reasonthe flame of a torch or other burning lighter, is accidentally extinguished. This match end may be coated with a waterproof substance to preserve the same against the decomposing action of the drippings and moisture in a mine. At that point where firing tab, a small charge of powder, seen at 5, is placed, and being at the time of insertion thereof in a moldable and plastic con (lit-ion, cap, and upon the hardening of the becomes an inseparable part thereof. Thus combustion of the tab 3, having been started by the frictional ignition of the match at the end of the cap, the heat or flame is rapidly transmitted to the ensuing combustion ately fires the fuse, tance of the charge fuse 2.
\Vhat I claim, is:-
1. A tubular igniter adapted to fit over the free end of a fuse, said-lgniter having a of this charge, immediirrespective of the dist'rom the duct of the ally ignitible composition, and a powder charge within and inseparably united with said tubular igniter.
2. An igniter comprising a tubular body tab, said tab having a frictlonally ignitible substance, and a powder charge within said tubular body and in proximity to said tab, said powder charge being united with said tubular body.
3. A fuse igniter comprising'a tubular body of celluloid adapted to snugly lit over and form a seal for the free end of a fuse, said body having one end thereof flattened to form a lighting tab and a seal for the free end of the same, a powder charge within and chemically united with said tubular body, and a 'frictiol'ially ignitible composi tion on said tab to communicate ignition to said powder charge.
In testimony whereof I atiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.

of inflammable material provided with a the edges of the cap are flattened to form a it readily unites with the walls of the. same,
powder charge 5, and the thinned extremity provided with a friction-
