Description
B. C. HUTTO.
LAMP CHIMNEY.
APPLICATION FlLED MAR. 23, 1918.
1,295,322. Patented Feb. 25, 1919.
I gwpwr to'a B. a? Haifa of .the burner indicated at BEECHER C. HUTTO, OF PELION, SOUTH CAROLINA.
LAMP-CHIMNEY.
Application filed March 23, 1918.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BEECHER C. HUTTO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pelion, in the county of Lexington and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp- Chimneys, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved lamp chimney, and has for its primary object to provide improved means on the neck of the chimney for engagement by upstanding resilient arms on the lamp burner whereby the chimney will be securely held in its applied position against accidental displacement, while at the same time the chimney may be easily and quickly removed when necessary.
It is also another object of the invention to provide the chimney with improved means whereby it is properly held in applied position, which is very simple in construction and will not add to the cost of manufacture of the ordinary lamp chimney and which will also be highly efficient and reliable for the purpose in View.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved form and construction of the several features of the lamp chimney as will be hereinafter more fully described, subsequently claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which similar reference characters designate the corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of an ordinary hand lamp provided with my improved chimney;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical section; and
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig 1. Re erring in detail to the drawing wherein I have illustrated an ordinary hand lamp,
5 designates the lamp chimney having a neck portion 6 adapted to be seated in the usual manner at its lower ed e upon the rim 7. The neck 6 of the chimney is provided intermediate of its ends with a continuous annular head 8 having its upper side slightly inclined upwardly as at 9 and merging into the wall of the neck 6. The lower side of this head which likewise merges into the neck wall is at a relatively greater inclination with re- Specification of Letters Patent.

spect to the horizontal plane of the bead 8 as shown at 10 and presents a gradual slope or incline in the wall of the neck 6 for engagement with the upper ends of the spring arms 11 which are fixed at their lower ends to the burner 7. Each of these retaining arms for the lamp chimney, preferably three in number, is outwardly bent adjacent its upper end to provide a seat 12 for the bead 8, the terminal of the arm being outwardly bent or inclined as shown at 13.
In the application of the chimney to the lamp burner, the neck 6 is moved downwardly between the arms 11, and the lower inclined side of the head 8 engaging the out-. wardly disposed terminals 13 of said arms forces the arms outwardly until the lower edge'of the neck 6 is seated on the rim of the burner and the head 8 is disposed in a plane below the ends 13 of the arms. The arms then immediately spring inwardly into clamping engagement upon the bead 8 which is received in the seats 12 of said arms. The lamp chimney is thus securely held or retainedin its applied position and its casual or accidental displacement and breakage obviated. The chimney may be readily removed when necessary by simply forcing the upper ends of the arms 11 outwardly be yond the head 8 on the neck of the chimney.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing,
the construction and manner of operation of the device will be readily understood. The bead 8 can be easily formed on the neck of the lamp chimney so that the chimney may be roduced at substantially the same cost as fire ordinary lamp chimney of this character. It will also be noted that the provision of this head on the neck of the chimney does not in'any manner interfere with the quick and thorough cleaning of the surfaces of the chimney.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The combination with a lamp having a burner and a plurality of upstanding spring arms fixed to said burner, of a lamp chimney having a neck portion engageable between the spring arms and provided with a continuous outwardly projecting annular head, the wall of the chimney being formed with a relatively long outwardly inclined portion constituting the lp'we-r side of the bead and a relatively short inwardly and upwardly inclined portion constituting the upper side of said bead, each of the spring In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my arms having an outwardly inclined portion signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
terminating in a bend at the upper end thereof for engagement upon the upper side BEECHER HUTTO' of the bead, and said inclined portions of Witnes'ses: the arms being spaced from the lower side ARCHIE BAUS, of said bead. O. L. HUTTO.
