J. P. SLOCUMF LAMP CHiMNEY. APPLICATION FILED sum 4. \911.
Patented Feb. 19, 1918.
JAMES P. SLOCUM, 0F BARNWELL, ALABAMA.
LAMP-CHIMNEY.
specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 19, 1918 Application filed June 4, 1917. Serial No. 172,767.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES P. SLocUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Barnwell, in the county of Baldwin, State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Lamp-Chimney; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to improvements in lamp chimneys.
One of its objects is the provision in a device of this character of means, whereby the chimney may be easily attached to the chimney stand of a lamp-burner and effectively secured in position.
Other objects will appear in the detailed description which follows.
It is to be understood that the invention is not to be confined to the exact construction herein disclosed, the right being reserved to make any changes or alterations fallin within the scope of what is claimed.
In the drawings:
Figurev 1 is a side elevation of a lamp chimney embodying the invention, the chimney stand also being shown in this figure.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, the stand however being omitted in this figure.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a chimney which may be of any desired form and 2 denotes the conventional lamp burner with the chimney stand attached. The chimney is provided with a base 3 by which it is held on the chimney stand by the spring clips 4 attached to the latter. On the lower edge the base 3 is provided with a plurality of circular ribs 5 uniformly spaced therearound, the intervening spaces 6 between the ribs permitting the base to be inserted between the clips a without the necessity of having the clips spring over the ribs. For a portion of their length the ribs are of a uniform width but for the remainder of their length they blend into the concave portions 7, these concave portions tapering downward where they connect with the base 3.
It is intended that the ribs 5 and concave portions 7 shall be made integral parts of the base 3 and formed thereon when the chimney is blown.
The operation of the device may be easily understood. To attach the chimney to the stand it is placed in such a position that the clips 4 will pass in the spaces between the ribs 5. The chimney may be then turned slightly to bring the ribs 5 under the clips, the chimney being held more securely as it is further turned to bring the tapered con cave portions 7 into contact with the clips 4.
It will be observed that the taperingconcave portions 7 afford means for securing the chimney between the clips 4, even though there may be some variations between the clips of different stands to which the chimney may be attached.
lVhat is claimed is:
In combination with a burner base having downwardly and outwardly curved extending spring arms, said arms having upper extensions curved inwardly, upwardly and outwardly, a lamp chimney having ribs concentric with the base of the chimney and provided with uniform spaces intervening the adjacent ends of the ribs, each of said spaces being substantially equal to each of said arms, whereby said arms may engage and pass therethrough when the chimney is lifted, each of said ribs for a portion of its length being of uniform width and the remainder of its length blending into a concave portion in forming to the curvature of the extension of said arm, one end of each concave portion terminating into an abrupt elongated shoulder flush and alined with one end of its ribs, the other end of the concave portion terminating in a short abrupt shoulder substantially midway the length of the rib, said concave portion tapering upwardly from the short shoulder and concentric with the chimney to the upper end of the elongated abrupt shoulder, whereby, as the chimney is partially rotated overcoming the locking connection of the arm extension with the concave portion, said arm extension will spring off the elongated abrupt shoulder into the intervening space.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES P. SLOCUM.
