JOSEPH ARTHUR HENRY CASTONGUAY, 013 BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINED TOBACCO-BOX AND CIGARETTE-MAKER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 25. 1919.
Application filed February 11, 1918. Serial N 0. 216,654.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH ARTHUR HENRY CAsToNGUAY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Boston, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Combined Tobacco-Box and Cigarette-Maker, of which the following is a specification, the same being a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it apperta'ins to make and use the same.
This inveiition relates to an apparatus for conveniently making small cigars consisting of finely cut tobacco rolled up in an envelop of thin paper-as rice paperso as to form a cylinder open at each end, which device serves to form an attachment of a tobacco box of ordinary or'approved construction, the whole being of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture and convenient and eflicient in practical operation.
In order to attain the desired end the invention consists in the construction, arrangement and operation of parts hereinbelow set forth.
In the drawings, illustrative of one embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of an article constructed according to my invention; and Fig. 2 is a section taken through the upper part of the body of the same when in a closed relation.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in both the views.
Referring particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the body of a receptacle to hold tobacco and 2 a cover therefor which is in the present instance attached to the said body by a hinge 3 as illustrated in Fig. 1.
My cigarette maker or former comprises two side walls 4 and an intermediate bottom portion 5, the side walls preferably being substantially of the same length as that of a cigarette wrapper and opened the width of a cigarette, the same being practically of U- shaped conformation. In the example illustrated the ends or projecting flanges of the former 45 are respectively passed over the edge of the cover or closure 2, as at 6, and through the body of the cover as at 10.
The closure 2 of the receptacle 1 is preferably formed with a slot 7 and the troughshaped cigarette former or container is constructed and arranged to be preferably attached to and detached from the lower face of the said closure in the present instance by means of one of the projecting flanges, as 6, at one end portion thereof being bent around the edge of the slot 7 of the closure, and the projecting flange, as 10, at the other and opposite end portion of the cigarette former being passed through the body of the closure.
An orifice 8 may be formed-in the closure, if desired, for the purpose of ejecting the rolled cigarette from the former, and the receptacle may have means of suspension, as the spring catch 9.
In operation, the cigarette wrapper is placed within the former and, after the insertion of the tobacco therein, the edges of the wrapper may be turned over on each other, and the completed cigarette may be pushed through the slot 7 or ejected from the former by means of the insertion of an instrument through the orifice 8.
The spaces between the, walls 4 of the cigarette former and the sides of the closure may serve as convenient receptacles to contain matches, if desired.
What I claim as my invention is In a device of the class described, a receptacle, a closure therefor having a surrounding flange provided with a'slot, and a cigarette former attached to the lower face of the closure and comprising a' troughshaped container having projecting flanges at the end portions thereof, one flange being adapted to be passed through the body of the closure and the oppositely disposed flange being constructed and arranged to be bent around an edge of the slot of the closure.
In testimony of the foregoing specification, I do hereby si the same in the city of Boston, county 0 Suffolk and State of Masjsachusetts, this 16th, day of September, 191
JOSEPH ARTHUR HENRY CASTONGUAY.
