Description

N. A. GARDINER.
Improvement in Wagon-Seat Fastenings.
No. 129,470, Patented July 16, I872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NATHAN A. GAltDINER, OF VIRGIL, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN WAGON-SEAT FASTENlNGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,470, dated July 16, 1872.
a I, NATHAN A. GARDINER, of the town of Virgil, in the county of Cortland and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Wagon-Seat Fastenings, of which the following is a-speoification:
My invention relates to the fastening of a wagon-seat to the rail forming a part of the wagon-body, and upon which the riser of the seat rests, by means of a bent lever attached to the riser upon the inside, actuated by a coilspring, and hooking over the rail.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a perspective view of the riser, with the rail and spring and lever attached. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same parts except the rail.
A is the riser upon which the seat rests; b is the rail upon which the riser rests; O is a bent lever, held in position by the clamp or guard e. The lever O has a depression or crease across it upon the outer side, in which the guard is fitted, so that the lever may move upon it as a hinge. The lever projects far enough below the riserso as to reach past the rail b, and then is bent squarely under the rail, as at g. The upper end of the lever is bent outwardly from the riser, as at f. At the back of this upper end of the lever is a coil-sprin g, d, one end of which is attached to the riser and the other to the lever. This spring, pressing the upper portion of the lever out, operates to hold the lower portion against the riser, and to hold or keep the lower end or hook of the lever under the rail, and thus permits the seats being raised or moved when in use. To take off the seat or change its position it is only necessary to press the upper portion of the lever against the riser when the lower end is moved out,and the rail is thus unclasped.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the lever O, bent as described, the guard e, coil-spring d, and riser a, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
