Description
D. WARRIN'G.
Ladies Head-Comb.
No. 129,441, I Patented Jul.)l 16, 1872.
PATENT FFICE.
DAVID WARRING, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT lN LADIES HEAD-COMES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,441, datedJuly 16, 1872.
To all to whom these presents shall come:
Be vit known that I, DAviD WARRING, of Boston, in the county of Suifolk and State of Massachusetts, have made an invention of a new and useful as well as attractive Ladies Head-Comb; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, due reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my invention in an expanded state, Fig. 2 being a vertical section, and Fig. 3 an outer face view of the same in a closed or contracted state.
The invention herein described is an attachment to a ladys tuck or twist7 comb; -and it consists in combining one or more imitation or artificial leaves or other articles of ornament with the comb by means of an intervening spring, in such manner that when the comb is passed into the back hair the ornament shall partially overlap and cling to the chignon or head-dress, while the leaves are applied to the spring in such manner that, as before stated, they may, if desirable, be expanded into a cluster, the spring itself being attached rigidly to the comb.
B represents a plate spring,-
of a size .and form corresponding substantially with the leaf c, behind which they are disposed, the aggregate leaves being disposed one behind the other when unexpanded; as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. The leaves are all disposed preferably with their stems upward, and all but the middle one are pivoted at or near their stem to the stein B, in order that they may be spread or expanded into a cluster, as shown in. Fig. l, which produ'ces a very pleasing eect. The leaves may be composed of thin metal, struck up in a suitable die, or they may be produced from horn, or tortoise, or other substances, as I do not coniine myself to any given material.
When applied to use the comb is passed into the back hair in the usual manner, and the leaves allowed to overlap and press upon the chignon, chat-elaine or Grecian braid, or other head-dress of hair or other material, the spring serving not only to retain the ornament in place, but the chignon also to a certain degree.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
As a new manufacture, a ladys comb provided with one or more artificial leaves or other articles of ornament, connected with it by a spring, substantially in the manner described, whether one or more of said leaves or other articles are pivoted to the spring or not.
DAVID WARRING.
