JAMES MCGONNAL, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
HANGER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES MoCoNNAL, a citizen of the United States of America, residin at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and gtate of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hangers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to picture hangers and the primary object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device that may be easily and quickly mounted in a Wall or other support to hold the suspension wire or cord of a picture or other article, so that the wire or cord cannot accidentally shift relative to the device and thus cause the picture or article to become unbalanced, out of alinement or hang crooked.
Another object of my invention is to provide a strong and durable picture hanger which when mounted in a wall or other support cannot rotate or become accidentally displaced, thus precluding any danger of the wire or cord being accidentally released thereby.
I attain the above and other objects by a mechanical construction which will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device;
Fig. 2 is a plan of the same;
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line IIIIII of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4: is a side elevation of a modified form of device;
Fig. 5 is a similar view of still another form of device.
In the drawing, the reference numeral 1 denotes a wall plate that may be circular in front elevation. Projecting at an angle from the rear face of this wall plate is a needle or pin 2 that will readily enter a wall or other support and by reason of its angularity prevent the wall plate 1 from rotating. The needle or pin 2 is preferably no larger than a ood size darning needle and will not materially disfigure or mar a wall or support in which it is placed. The pin 2 may be molded in or otherwise connected to the plate 1.
Projecting outwardly from the front face Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 28, 1919.
Application filed June 7, 1917. Serial No. 173,320.
of the wall plate 1 is a wire or cord holding peg or mem er 3 and this member is disposed at an angle relative to the wall plate 1, with the longitudinal axis thereof in alinement with the pin 2, consequently the flat end 4 of the member 3 constitutes a head that may receive a blow to drive the pin 2 in the wall.
The member 3 is rectangular in cross section and has its uppermost edge provided with an angularly disposed tapering slot 5 that provides a prong 6. Besides the slot 5 tapering inwardly to its end, said slot is V- shaped in cross section, as best shown in Fig. 3, so that there will be a plurality of binding edges or points 7 for wire cables 8 placed in the slot 5. The binding edges 7 will also cooperate with the side edges 9 of the member 3 in preventing the wire or cord 8 from shifting crosswise of the member 3. The tapered walls of the slot 5 permit of the wire or cord 8 being wedged in the slot and in consequence of the wire or cord being gripped at many points, it is practically impossible for the wire or cord to shift or become accidentally displaced.
In Fig. 4, a screw 10 is substituted for the pin 2, and in Fig. 5 there is a pin 11, triangular in cross section, to prevent the hanger member 12 from rotating. This hanger member is cylindrical and has the upper edge thereof provided with a tapering slot 13 in which a wire or cord may be wedged and firmly held.
On all of the forms of the hanger, it is possible to use the device as a peg from which garments may be suspended, or a wire or cord can be placed on the device in the usual manner, but with the wire or cord anchored in the slot 5 of the member 3, it is impossible for a picture or article to become unbalanced after being properly hung. It is therefore possible for a housewife or janitor to safely dust or clean pictures and articles.
WVhile in the drawings there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is 2-- A device of the type described comprising a Wall plate, an angularly disposed pin car- In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature ried thereby, a member carried by said plate, in the presence of tWo Witnesses. in alinement With said pin, and a prong as JAMES MOCONNAL. part of said member and cooperating there- Witnesses:
5 With in providing a tapering slot that is V- KARL H. BUTLER, shaped in cross section. ANNA M. DORR.
