WILLIAM HARRY JOSLIN', OF SOUTH SCI'IUATE, RHODE ISLAND.
BOX.
Application filed November 16, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM HARRY JosLIN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of South Scituate, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a box Or case adapted more particularly for the display of goods on a stand, counter or other ex osed position, and the object of the inventlon is to provide an attachment for sucha box or case whereby an ornamental dlsplaymg member may be connected to the cover, to produce a neat and attractive appearance and to display such advertising or other matter a may be mounted thereon, said member being adapted to be readily moved up into a compact position when not in use so as to not interfere with the closing of the cover over the body of the box.
l/Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the case with the lid closed.
Fig. 2- is a perspective view shOWing the case with the lid open and the display member swung up and fastened in operative position.
Fig. 3 is a front view also showing the display member in operative position.
Fig. 4 is a plan view partly in section, showing the position of the displav member relative to the edge of the cover flange when in operative position.
Fig. 5 is a sectional side elevation showing a portion of the cover and an edge view of the display member in upright or operative position.
Fig. 6 is the same as Fig. 5 but showing the display member in folded or in inoperative position ready for closing the cover over the body of the box.
Referring to the drawing, 10 designates the body portion of the display box or case which may be made in any suitable shape or size and of any desired material, the same being designed more particularly for displaying dry goods, hoe strings, or other goods on a counter or other exposed position. This box is provided with a cover or Specification of Letters Patent.

lid 11 which is hinged at 12 thereto, the opening motion of the cover being limited by cords 13 or other suitable means.
The flange 1 1 on the front edge of the box i notched or cut away as at 15, the edge being preferably on an angle as at 16 so as to prevent articles from catching thereon when the cover is closed.
It is found in practice desirable to provide a display member on which may be shown n ornamentation such as an emblem or the like or other advertising matter for the purpose of rendering the box neat in appearance for compelling the attention of passersby to the goods contained therein.
To accomplish thi in a simple, practical and efliecient manner, I have provided a display member which may be formed of cardboard or other suitable material, the same having a base portion 17 hinged at 18 to the back 19 of the box-cover and an upright member 20 hinged at 21 to the outer edge of the base member 17. This upright member a best illustrated in Fig. 3, is slotted as at 22 and 23 inwardly from its opposite edges leaving a neck portion 241 of a width to enter the notch 15 in the flange 14; on the cover. This neck portion is hinged as at 18 whereby the upright member may be swung upwardly, the neck portion projecting through the notch and the wings 25 formed by the slots 22 are then adapted to be bent back over the edge of the flange 14 to firmly lock and secure this upright member in operative position.
In order to insure the locking of this up right member in operative position it is found necessary to form the hinge 21 on the base member 17 at a point a short distance inward from the outer edge 26 of the flange 14 so that when the upright member is swung upwardly its wings will positively engage the flange and hold this portion in upright position.
When it is desired to fold this member down against the inside of the box as illustrated in Fig. 6, it is only necessary to swing these wing portions outwardly and by means of the double hinge 18 and 21 the whole device is adapted to lie flat against the inside of the box-cover to be swung down onto the body of the box without interference.
The device is extremely simple and practical in construction and by its use the box is rendered very ornamental and attrac tive in appearance and advertising matter mounted thereon ma be brought to view when the box is disp aying the goods contained therein.
The foregoing description is directed solely toward the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A display case comprising a body portion having a cover hinged thereto, a flange on the free edge of said cover, a :Eoldable display member having a base portion hinged to the inside of said cover, an upright portion hinged to said base portion whereby said display member is adapted to swing down to lie flat against the inside of the cover and to swing outwardly and upwardly to expose its display face, and means for retaining said member in extended position.
2. A display case comprising a body portion having a cover hinged thereto, a notched flange on the free edge of said\ cover, a foldabledisplay member having a base portion hinged to the inside of said cover, an upright portion hinged to said base portion whereby said display member may be swung down to lie against the inside of the cover and swung outwardly to extend through said notch to expose its face, the opposite edges f said upright portion being slotted inwardly leaving a connecting portion to extend :throughsaid notch, and the wings onsaidupright portion being formed to engage said 'flangeto firmlyihold this p0rtion substantially upright relative to said flange.
in testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presenceof two witnesses.
WVI'LLIAIVI HARRY JOSLIN.
