Description

Top-for Heating-Moves. l ANo. 128,789. Patented July 9, 1an.
UNITED STATES.
ESEK BUSSEY, OF TROY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENTv IN TOPS FOR HEATING-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,789, dated July 9, 1872.
To all whom it may concern: p
Be it known that I, EsEK BUssEY, of the city of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being hereby had to the accompanying drawing which forms and makes a part of this specification.
Like letters represent and refer to like or corresponding parts.
Figure 1 is a view of the top part of an ordinary magazine heating-stove. Fig.2 represents the top with the two covers raised. Fig. 3 is a section through Fig. 1, showing clearly the construction of the two covers or lids, and their arrangement whereby I am enabled to open them both, as shown at Fig. 2, by simply swinging the upper or ornamental cover on a plane with the top of the stove, as shown at said Fig. 1, and hereinafter more fully described. Figs. 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 are views, showing different portions of the magazine cover proper and of the upper or ornamental cover, and also the lugs or projections cast on each, and their relative positions to one another, whereby the said two covers are opened by one movement, in the manner and for the purposes hereinafter specified.
I am aware lthat devices are in use, and have been patented, for raising the inner or magazine-cover by the movement necessary to swing the outer or ornamental cover; but these devices consist of arms or levers projecting from i the under side of said outer cover at or near the center thereof', and working in a slot or recess in the magazine-cover, the whole ar rangement being exposed to view, complicatedin its nature, 'costly to manufacture, and, even when properly constructed, working very unsatisfactorily. The object of my invention and improvements are to accomplish this same end, but in a manner more satisfactory, and by means much more simple, and that will also lessen the cost of manufacture.
My invention consists in casting, riveting,
or otherwise securely fastening to the outer periphery of the upper or ornamental cover of a magazine heating or other stove a suitable curved-shaped lug or arm, which, while fitting into a proper aperture in the top of the stove and acting as a pivot upon which to swing said cover, also, by means of its shape and construction, acts as a lever to press against a properly-shaped lug or arm projecting outward from the periphery of the inner lid or magazine-cover proper, -and thereby enabling the said inner lid or cover to be raised when and by the same movement the said outer or ornamental cover is swung one side on a plane with the top of the stove, substantially in the manner and for the purposes herein fully described and specified.
In the drawing, A represents the outer or ornamental cover, and B the inner or magazine-cover proper. This outer cover A I make of cast-iron, of the usual shape, and the pivot or lever C, shown at Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 7, is also made of cast-iron, and may be cast with or riveted upon the said outer cover A. This cover A is held in its proper position on the top of the stove by means of. the said arm or lever C, which passes through a proper aperture in the rim of the top of the stove, shown at Fig. 3. The inner or magazine-cover B I construct of cast-iron, in the usual manner, and it is hinged in place by the pins a a, Fig. 8, which pins fit into corresponding holes in the top of the stove. This inner lid B has an arm or projection, D, Fig. 8, which projects outward, and is concealed from view by the rim of the top of the stove E, Figs. 1 and 2. This arm I) is sojconstructed as to have a proper bearing-surface or inclined plane, b, Fig. 8, against which the lever O will press when the cover A is being opened, so that by -means of such pressure the saidinner cover B will be raised by the same movement that swings the outer cover or lid A.
By the means above described I am enabled to accomplish the desired object of opening both the covers A and B with one movement by a device simple inconstruction and easy of manufacture, and that will also be entirely concealed from view by the rim of the stove.
What I claim as new and my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The magazine covcr B having attached thereto the arm or bearing D, in combination with the ornamental cover A having attached thereto the arm or lever C, substantially in the manner and for the purposes herein del scribed.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day 0f April, 1872.
ESEK BUSSEY.
