P RMU ATION EocK DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec, 3 1918 Application filed November 15, 1916. Serial No; 131,437.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, RoLLrN C. LEwIs, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stamford, in thecounty of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Permutation Lock Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,-clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in permutation lock devices, and more par ticularly to such as are adapted to control the operation of electrical switches, one object of the invention being to provide simple and efiicient means, in a lock structure of the type specified, which will prevent access, by unauthorized persons, to the switch or other devices which the lock controls.
A further object is to provide a: lock switch mechanism wherein permutation lock devices are employed and in which the fence which" cooperates with said lock devices shall be connected with the movable member of the" switch devices, so that when the permutation devices are properly set to be interlocked with the fence, the movable member of the switch devices maybe actuated by a continued turning of the dial knob.
A further object, is to provide a permutation lockin which'ihe dial, dial ring and tumblers shall be combined in a single structure or unit and provided with meanswhereby the removal of this structure shall be controllable by operation of the permutatmn lock devices and a movable member coop erable therewith.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a face view of alock structure embodying. my invention ,1 Fig. 21s a transversesectional view taken between the permutation 4: is a sectional view of the structure shown in Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a sectional view, partly in elevation, of the complete lock switch;
Fig. 6 is a detail View showing the. switch arm and fence connected therewith, and.
Fig. 7 is a detail view of the curb device. H I
1 represents a base of suitable. insulating material and on which the lock housing 2 is mounted, said housing being provided locking with an opening having internally threaded annular flange 3 to receive the threaded portion 4 of a tumbler curb 5. The housing is secured to the base block 1, by means of pins or posts 6 which pass through said block and through lugs 7 secured to the housing 2, said pins or, posts beingprovlded near their inner ends. with suitable transverse holes for the receptionof'cotter pins or keys 8. It is apparent that the keys 8 cannot beremoved to remove the housingtion tumblers 9 and also to receive and provide a mounting for a collar or annular enlargement 10 on the lock spindle 11. This spindle is threaded throughout a portion of its length to receive the internally threaded hub 12 of the cam plate or disk 13, the
latter being secured to the spindle 11 by means of a key or screw 14 and adapted to I transmit motion to the tumblers in a manner which is well understood. The tumblers are made with notches 15 as is also the cam plate. or disk 13 and, when these notches are brought into alinementwith-each other by certain manipulation of the tumblers. said notches will receive a device which will lock Y the tumblers to the curb, and when said notches are brought into alinement by another manipulation of the tumblers, they will receive a device which will connect the tumblers with the switch devices.
The spindle 11 is provided with a knob 16 which serves to clamp a dial .17 to said spindle, the peripheral portion of said dial entering the recessed outer face of the curb. The. peripheral portion of the curb thus forms a dial ring 18, and this ring ispro-- vided at points located (in the'present instance) 90 degrees apart, with marks 19 and 20 with which the'graduations on the dial may be caused to register.
Diametrically opposite the mark 19 a curb .beyond the dial ring to permit manual n1anipulation of said slide to move the same into or OUtOf the notches 15 of the tumblers 9 and disk 13. The lockingaslide 21 is made with a shoulder 26 which, when the slide is moved out of engagement with the notches 15, will enter a notch 27 in the housing 2, and thus prevent the curb and the parts carried thereby from beingremoved-from the housing. Movement of the slide from the locked position Yabove described will be prevented by thetumblers 9 and disk 13, and said slide can be detached are brought into alinement and this from the housing only when the notches 15 cannot be accomplished by anyone not familiar with the proper combination to bring about.
7 When suchalinement opposite said slide. thelock shall have been'operated with the proper combination (using the lndicator mark '19 'on' the dial ring) to bring the notches 15 into alinement opposite the locking device 21, the latter can then be moved out of engagement with the housing and into the notches 15, thus locking the tumblers 9 and disk 13 to the curb and permitting the latter to be unscrewed from the housing.
Theswitch devices may be adapted for any desired number of electrical connections. In the drawings, contact plates 28 disposed in circular arrangement and se"ured to the insulating base block 1 andsuitably spaced apart.
movable contact member '29 (which may comprise superposed spring plates) 1S secured to an insulating block 30 mounted to turnon'a pin 31 passing through the base ,blo'k 1.
The contact member 29 may be made with two-fingers 32 33 to move over the'contact plates 28, and one'of these fingers may be provided'with 'a. ball 3 to move over said contact plates or become disposed between the adjacent ends of two'of them;
Stop pins '35 may be provided :to limit the movements of the movable switch member.
The revcluble blo k 30 is provided with an arm '36 with which a fence 37 is piv-' otally connected. A-spring 38 tends to press said fence toward the tumblers and the latter serve to retain a lug 39 carried by said combination lock attached-t0 said housing,
fence in a not h 40 in the flange of a curved plate 41 se'ured to the base blo k 1,thus
normally preventing movement of the switch i member 29.
WVhen the permutation lock shall have been so operated (using the indication mark 20 onthe dial ring in effecting the'combination) as to bring the notches 15 of the tum- I have shown four either direction, will eflect the operation of i the switch as may be desired. a t 7 Various changes might be made in" the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope and hence I do not wish to restrict myself to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is I 1. In a combination lock, the combination of a housing, a curb having threaded connection with the housing, a dial andtumblers mounted on and carried by the curb so as to be ,removableztherewith, and a manually operable lockingdevne carried by the curb and controlled by the tumblers for locking the curb. against removal except when the tumblers have been set to permit,
of movement of the locking device and for 1 ing, tumblers at the rear of the curb and manually operable means carried by the curb and controlled by-the tumblers for lock ng the curb against removal except when the tumblers have been set to permit of the movement of the locking device and for locking the tumblers against rotation on the cur v I 3.
