To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DoRAH W. WILT, a citizen of the United States, residing at University Place, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Combination-Lock, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in combination locks, the primary object o1' the invention being the provision of a combination or permutation lock, which dispenses with the employment of the usual manually operated bolt actuated mechanism, the knob actuated stem of the combination portion being provided with a slidably mounted bolt engaging arm or lever adapted to be controlled entirely by the tumblcrs of the lock to be projected into and out of bolt actuating position.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a combination lock, which by reason yof the fact that no manually operated bolt mechanism is employed and further that the dial and knob may be rotated in either direction when the tumblers are in locked position without any strain being thrown upon the tumblers and other parts, this particular arrangement, rendering the lock less liable to be picked by experts, and preventing any injury to the working parts due to usual method of forcing the tumblers by the manual bolt actuating lever when attacked by burglars.
A still further object of the present invention is the provision of a tumbler casing in which is mounted a plurality of disk tumblers, each of which is provided with a similarly7 shaped peripheral slot, while .iit ting exteriorly of all the tumbler disks and having a rim extended to incase their peripheries is the main tumbler, which acts as a guard to prevent the pin of a slidably mounted arm or lever, which is disposed. to be thrown into and out of engagement with a bar for actuating the bolts, from entering the slots of the tuinblersv eXcept when the pin is adjacent the slot of the main tumbler, the knob and dial devicey being connected to rotate the main tumbler so that when rotated according to the proper comT bination its slot will be brought into alinement with all of the slots of the disk tumblers, when in an uppermost position, so that the gravity of` the locking lever, or a slight movement of the main tumbler will cause the pin carried by the lever to slide .locked out of bolt engaging position by the tumblers.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the safe door, having mounted therein and thereupon the dial casing or rim the dial 3 carried by the knob 4, being so mounted that the threaded stem 6 of the knob will extend` through the aperture 5 of the casing and door, and concentrically of the tumbler casing 7. v

is provided with a longitudinal slot S, the
end 9 having two flat sides and the thread ed concentric opening or socket 10, the locking screw 11, being mounted within the socket 10, while a key 18, enters the slot 8, for the purpose of properly securing the main tumbler 20 and its hub 19 to the stem.
Concentrically of the casing 7 is a sleeve 13, provided with a longitudinal slot 14, for the reception of the lugs 15 of the spacing washers 16, which are disposed between the respective tumblers or disks 17, which are mounted, as is the usual practice with pervmutation locks, within the casing and carry the usual studs or screws 17, whereby the slots 17 of the respective disks 17 may be alined, as shown in Fig. 4;. As before stated the main tumbler 29 is keyed upon the inner end of the stem (l, while fitting about the extreme end of the casing 7 and stem G, is a cover disk "Ehe main tumbler 2O is provider with the rim 2l which extends to incase the peripheries of the tumbler' 17, the tumbler 2O being provided with cam edge 22 and with the opposed edge 23, both providing a slot to aline when the proper combination has been employed, with the slots 17 ot the disks or tumblers 17, so that the pin 32 of the bolt actuating lever or arm 29 will enter all of said slots, and thus permit the proper actuation of the lever or arm 29, as will presently appear. rlhe rim of the tumbler casing' 7 is provided with an aperture 2d at its upper portion, one wall oit which has progecting downwardly and within the casing 7 a lue' 25, the opposed portion of the rim, or rather at a diametrically opposite point to the aperture 251-, is a recessed portion providing` the two shoulders 27 and 28 in the rim ol" the casing 7 The tumbler 20 carries a screw or stud 20, to coact with the screws or studs 17 of the tumbler 17, thus providing;` a coacting means, as is usual, between the tumblers, so that the slots 17H and the slot formed by the edges 22 and 23 in the t'lunbler 20 may be alined.
The locking actuating arm or lever 29, is provided with a key-hole slot 30, to lit slidably upon the reduced portion 9 of the stem 7, between the outer face oft the main tumbler 20 and the cover l2. rlhis lever or arm 29, is further provided with the terminal 3l, carrying a pin 32, which as above described is adapted to register with the slots of the tumblers and main tumbler when the proper combination has been worked, or to ride upon the periphery of the rim 21 of the tumbler 2() when the slots of the tumblers are out olf registration. The extreme enc 33 oi' the terminal 3l when the lever is in the position as shown in dotted lines Fig'. 2, abuts the inner wall of the casing 7 at 26, the arm 35 when in this position having engaged the pin 37 of the bar 33 and retracted the bar to unlocked position. A, second arm is carried by the lever 29, and this arm 35 is disposed for f movement within the slotted upper end of the pivoted lever1 39, which when the device is used in connection with an autoniebile mechanism, controls the switch in the electrical circuit thereof, thus providing` in a single lock a means for actuatingthe looking bar 3S and for operating' the switch actuating, lever 39.
Presupposing the parts to be in the position as indicated in full lines Fig. 2 and dotted lines Fig. 3, the bar 33 being in lool-red position and it is desired to release the bar. To accomplish this, that is to cause the arm or lever 29 to Llirst assume the full line position as shown in Fig. 3 and finally the dotted lines, as shown in Fig. 2, the knob t is actuated to bring,` all of the slots 17 of the respective tumblers 17 and the rocess formed by the cam edges 22 and 23 of the tumbler 2O into registration, at which time the pin 32 of the arm or lever 29, due to the gravity of the lever 29, will enter said slots, as indicated in dotted lines Fig. 3 and in full lines Fig. a. rlfhe knob Ll is now turned to the lelt, as viewed in Fig. l. or to the right as viewed in Fig. 2, and as the lever 29 has lowered to have the reduced portion 9 et the stem 6 lit in the reduced portion oii the slot 30, the lever 29 is rotatable with the stem G, so that the movement oit the stem G will move the lever and as the extreme end 33 of the arm or lever 29 has been retracted lrom the dotted line position Fig. 3, to the full line position, the outer end of the lever 29 will be within the inner wall of the casing 7 and assumes the position as indicated in dotted lines Fig. 2, this movement causing the arm 35 to pass between and to abut the pins 37 and move he locking bar 33 to the unlocked position.
To lock the bar 38, the knob t is moved to the right as viewed in Fig. l, or to the left as viewed in Figs. 2 and 3, and as the portion 9 is still within the reduced end of the slot 39, the end 33 of the arm or lever 29 is brought into engagement with the lug; 25, and as the continued movement oit the knob et rotates the tumbler 20, the cam edge 22 riding under the pin elevates the lever 29, the reduced end 9 of the stem being a loose lit in the reduced portion of the keyhole slot 30, and pern'iitting such movement. As the knob Llis still rotated, the lever 29 is elevated from the full line position, Fig. 3, to the dotted line position, at w rich time the pin 32 rides upon the periphery or" the tumbler 20, and the knob 4 is tree to be rotated to throw the slots i7 oit all tumblers 17 out of alinement. As the leve-r 29 has moved 'from the dotted line position, Fig. 2, to the full line position of Fig. 3, the bar 38 has been moved outwardly into locking position, the bar 33 thus being mechanically moved by the lever 29.

A combination lock, comprising a stem, a plurality of tumblers mounted thereon, a bar, and means capable of both sliding and oscillating movements connected to the stem to be operated by one of the tumblers to slide into and out of the path of the bar and to be oscillated by the stern to actuate the bar.
2. A combination lock, comprising` a tumbler casing having' diametrically opposite recesses in the wall thereof, a plurality of tumblers mounted therein, a knob actuated stem concentric of the casing and tumblers and operably connected to the tumblers, a bar, an oscillatory lever of greater length than the diameter of the casing slidably mounted upon the'stem and coacting means carried by one of the tumblers and the lever for imparting a sliding movement to the lever, the lever being locked against oscillatory movement when the tumblers are in locking position and being permitted an oscillatory movement when the tumblers are in unlocking position.
3. A combination lock, comprising a tumbler casing having an inner open end, the rim of which is provided with diametrically disposed reduced and enlarged recesses, a plurality of tumblers mounted in the casing, each of said tumblers having a peripheral slot, a knob actuated stem concentric of the casing and tumblers and operably connected with the tumblers, a double-armed lever slidably and pivotally mounted upon the inner end thereof, a bar, and co-acting means carried by one of the tumblers and lever for imparting sliding movement to the lever, whereby the lever is locked against oscillatory movement when the slots of the tumblers are out oi.l registration or is permitted an oscillatory movement when the slots of the tumblers are in registration.

A combination lock, comprising a tumbler casing, a plurality of ,tumblers mounted therein and provided each with a slot opening toward the periphery, a knob actuated stem concentric of the casing, a main tumbler carried by the stem and in coperative relation to the other tumblers, said main tumbler being provided with a slot having a cam-shaped wallsaid casing being provided with diametrically disposed recesses, a lever mounted intermediate of its ends upon the stem and slidable thereupon, said lever being of a greater length than the diameter of the casing, a bar, a pin carried by the lever disposed 'or movement into and out of registration with the slots oit' all of the tumblers, said lever when in registration with the slots being disposed to engage the bar to actuate the same when the stem is rotated in one direction, a reverse rotation of the stem due to the cam shaped wall of the slot of the main tumbler when in engagement with the pin of the lever moving the lever out of the path to engage the bar and locking the lever against sliding movement.
5. A permutation lock comprising a turning dial having a stem provided with an inner end having hat sides, a plurality of permutation disks supported by said stem and having notches adapted to be brought into registration with each other, means on the respective disks for causing successive rotation thereof, a displaceable lever supported upon the stem and having a key-hole shaped slot therein, whereby on the movement of the lever in one direction it will lock with the stem and on movement thereof in the opposite direction it will disengage from the stem, means carried by the lever and engageable in the notches in the disks when the lever is in locked engagement with the stem, and a trip latch operated by said lever.
6. A permutation lock comprising a turning dial having a stem provided with an inner end having flat sides, a plurality of permutation disks supported by said stem and having notches adapted to be brought into registration with each other, means on the respective disks forl causing successive rotation thereofa displaceable vlever supported upon the stem and having a key-hole shaped slot therein, whereby on the movement of the lever in one direction it -will lock the stem and on movement thereof in the opposite direction it will disengage from the stem, a locking lip formed on the lever and engageable in the notches in the disks when the lever is in locked engagement with the stem, a trip latch operated upon by the lever and movable into and out of the path of an element for the locking and unlocking thereof, and a stationary means surrounding the disks and adapted to act upon the lever :tor holding the lip thereof engaged in the notches in the disks when the said lever is in one position.4
