WILLIAM IR,.PAYNE; OF ESX-DALE, WEST VIRGINIA.
WATCH-FOB.
Application filed June 7, 1918.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM PAYNE, a citizen of' the United States, residing at Eskdale, in the county of Kanawha and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVatch-Fobs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a watch fob and has for its principal object the production of a deviccwhich is both ornamental and useful.
Aanother object of this invention is the production of a watch fob wherein a slide is carried by thercasing, this slide being adapted to carry any desired subject matter, such for instance as a calendar and also an identification card, although under normal yconditions, the slide is carried within the casing to be partially shielded from view, thus allowing the casing to present an ornamental and pleasing effect.
Another object of this invention is the production of a watch fob wherein the casing is provided with a front wall and also with side flanges formed on the wall, whereby the slide may be easily guided, this slide being provided with retaining means for holding the calendar and identification card or other subject matter contained upon 'the card against accidental displacement.
Broadly stated, this invention consists of a casing formed of a front wall having side flanges thereon, a slide having retaining flanges thereon, the inner end of said slide being slightly off-set, and a retaining strap connected to the off-set inner end of the slide and extending through the upper portion of the casing, whereby the strap will constitute a guide for pulling the slide without friction into the casing.
One practical form of construction and assembly of the present invention will be hereinafter described and is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a rear eleva-tion of the complete watch' fob.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device, the retaining strap being shown in section.
Figa 3 is a front elevation of the watch fob, the slide being partially removed.
Fig. 4 is a central vertical section through the device, the slide ybeing partially removed and the strap being shown in elevation, and
Fig. 5 is a central transverse section through the watch fob.
In the preferred embodiment of the pres- Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. i9, reis.
Serial No. 238,728.
ent invention, about to be described, 5 indicates in `general the casing of the watch fob, which is formed of a front wall 6. This front wall 6 may have any configuration or formations thereon to make the same present an ornamental and pleasing effect, without departing in any way from the spirit of the present invention. The substantially L-shaped flange 7 is formed upon the side and top edges of the front wall 6, although it will be seenthatthe lower edge of the front wall 6 is unobstructed, as shown in Fig. 4. The combination of the L-shaped flange-and the front wall providing a substantially U-shaped construction adjacent the sides of the casing, as seen in Fig. 5. l
The slide 8 comprises a substantially flat construction, as it is formed of a blank strip of material and it will be noted that this slide 8 is provided with'an off-set upper end 9, as shown in Fig. 4. This slide 8 is of the correct width to pass into the casing, by fitting between the front walls and the flange 7 of this casing, as shown' in several figures of the drawing. Accordingly it will be seen that `this slide 8 is free tomove into or out of the casing, accordingly to the will4 information, Asuch for instance as the identification of the owner of the fob, or a calendar orl any other matter desired. Tt will be noted however, that the flanges 10 ex4 i tend substantially parallel and horizontal and for this reason support the sheets 11, although the flange 7 of the casing will hold these sheets against side displacement.
The L-shaped flange 7 is provided with a central opening 12 in the top thereof and it will be noted that the strap 13 is passed through the opening 14 in the oE-set end 9 of the slide 8. This retaining strap 13, as above suggested, passes through the opening 12 of the flange 7 and for this reason it is obvious that the strap will support the slide and as the slide is movably mounted within the casing, the casing will in turn be supported upon the slide.
At this point, attention is invited to the fact that the flange l at the lower end of the slide is formed by bending the slide upwardly in a U-shaped manner and that a tab is struck from the flange and eX- tends downwardly below the lower end of the slide, thus constituting a grip, whereby the slide may be held while the casing` will be shifted when access is desired to the sheet ll carried by the slide.
When the invention is in use, it will be noted that the stra-p is connected to the offset upper end of the slide 8 and that the casing is carried upon the strap. Accordingly, when the casing is released and the strap is pulled upon, the casing will be moved over the slide until it engages the side edges of the slide and then the casing and slide will be held in assembled condition, as indicated in Fig. 1. The off-set upper end 9 causes the strap 13 to centrally guide the slide into the casing and thus the sheet 11 carried upon the slide will be shielded from injury and observation. sired to the sheet, the tab 15 may be gripped,
i as may be the casing, and then the casing may be moved along the strap to cause the slide to be moved out of engagement with the casing if desired, thus disclosing the sheet l1 carried upon the slide to view.
Thus it will be seen that the Watch fob is not only ornamental but is also useful and has the L-shaped flange to hold the slide in engagement with the casing, although allowing the casing to be light in construction.
' Furthermore, the olf-set end of the slide and the opening formed in the flange, coperating with the supporting strap constitute guides for directing the slide into the casing, although the tab struck from the flange at the lower end of the slide permits of easy removal of the slide from the casing when desired.
The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be considered the preferred, or approved, form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, mate- When however, access is de-v rials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire. to secure by ALetters Patent, is
l. In a device of the class described, the combination of a casing consisting of a front wall having an L-shaped flange formed upon the side and top edges, the lower end of said wall being unobstructed, said L-shaped flange having an opening formed in the top thereof, a slide having an off-set inner end, a retaining strap connected to the off-set inner end and extending through the opening in said L-shaped flange, whereby the casing will be supported upon the slide, while said strap will constitute a guide for the movement of the casing, a flange carried upon said casing adjacent its inner end, the lower end of said slide also being rolled upwardly to form a supporting flange, whereby articles may be carried on the last mentioned flange, a tab struck from the last mentioned flange and extending in the same plane as said slide, whereby the tab may be gripped for holding the slide in a set position as the casing is being moved off or onto lthe slide.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a casing consisting of a flanged body, a flat slide movable upon said body and guided by said flange, means for supporting said slide and casing, the lower end of said slide being rolledy upwardly to form a supporting flange, whereby articles may be carried on said flange, a tab struck from the last mentioned flange and eXtending in the same plane as the slide, whereby the tab may be gripped'for holding .the slide in a set position as the casing moves'ofl' or onto the slide.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM R. PAYNE.
