Description

Patented July 11, 1916.
W I ATTORNEY J. H. APPLETON.
BOX. APPLICATION FILED DEC.27, 1915.
iii rams arena ormpn.
JOSEPH H. APPLETON, OF ATTLEBORO. MASSACHUSETTS.
BOX.
Application filed December 27, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. APPLETON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and. useful Improvement in Boxes, of which'the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in boxes and has for its object to provide a box which has incorporated therein a card adapted for receiving and displaying price markings or birthday or other gift sentiments.
Further, the invention aims to provide a box having a card associated therewith, which card has a removing tab connected thereto so that the tab may be used in facilitating opening of the box, 2'. 0., removal of the cover.
Further and other objects will be later herein set forth and of themselves manifested in the course of the following description.
In the drawingsFigure 1 is a perspective view of the box in closed position, i. 0., with cover thereon. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the cover being removed, showing the card in dotted lines in both withdrawn and. housed positions. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the card. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the card held by the cover in position to receive price markings or other matter calling attention to the goods. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of Fig. 4.
The invention includes a box proper 1, having a filling piece covered with cloth 2,
such as velvet above its bottom. One end of the box is slotted at 3 to receive therein a card 4 having a tab 5. The other end of the card has a flange 6 for engagement with the slotted end of the box to restrict the extent of withdrawal of the card. A Cover 7 completely incloses the box top and when in normal position as shown in Fig. 1, the tab5 projects beyond the cover so that same may be gripped in one hand and the cover in the other to facilitate removal of the cover, or separation of the box and cover. When the parts are in the position shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the cover 7 engages the card and holds same vertically and against the end of the box so that display matter calling attention to the articles, such as jewelry which may be attached to the fabric face 2, or the Specification of Letters Patent.

price of the articles displayed, may be marked on the card.
The card, it will be understood is to be used interchangeably, namely to either receive price markings or other advertising matter, or as depicted in Fig. 2, the card may be used to receive gift sentiments and the name of the donor, in which latter event the recipient of the gift pulls out the card so as to be informed as to the giver and such sentiments appropriate to the occasion as the giver may inscribe upon the card.
It will thus be apparent from the foregoing that the card in shipment or where bearing the name of the donor of the article within the box, is normally housed in the box and is removed to view and inspection by simply pulling upon the tab to bring the card to the position of Fig. 2. Similarly when the card is to be used as shown in Fig. 4, it may be housed in the box during shipment and withdrawn and placed in the position shown in Fig. 4 when desired. In either instance the card is adapted for housing within the box and is normally concealed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination with a box having a merchandise receiving filling piece stationarily secured above its bottom, and having a slotted end, a card slidable through said slot and between the bottom and filling piece and when in the box being concealed by said filling piece.
2. In combination with a box, a card slidable within and without the box, means to limit the sliding movement of the card and to allow same to be disposed at right angles to and across an end of the box, and a cover for the box adapted to receive the box and to engage the card and hold same in said angular position.
3. A box having a card provided with a tab slidably connected thereto, and a cover for the box completely removable therefrom, the tab being adapted to extend across an edge of the cover to facilitate separation of the box and cover.
4. In combination with a box and a cover completely separable therefrom, a card slidable independently of the box and cover and within and without the box, and means to limit the extent of outward sliding movement of the card said card when Withdrawn In testimony whereof I have signed my from the box being movable to engage an name to this specification in the presence of end of the box and to extend at right angles two subscribing witnesses.
thereto and said cover being adapted to re- 7 JOSEPH H. APPLETON. 5V ceive the box bottom and to engage the card Witnesses:
to hold the latter against said end of the box ADA E. HAGERTY,
and in said right angular disposition. J. A. MILLER.
