Description

S. A. DUNNiNGTON.
Improvement in Refrigerators.
Patented Ju'ne18, 1872.
U Nrrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STEPHEN A. DUNNINGTON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT m REFRIGERATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Fatent No. 128,028, dated June 18, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Refrigerators, invented by STE PHEN A. DUNNINGTON, of the city, county, and State of New York.
Figure 1 is a detail vertical longitudinal section of my improved refrigerator taken through the line x 00, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a detail vertical cross-section of the same taken through the line y y, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved refrigerator which shall be so constructed as to enable ice and salt tobe applied to produce cold, and which will keep the articles placed in it perfectly dry and intensely cold; and it consists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the refrigerator, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the inner box of the refrigerator, which is made of suitable sheet metal. The top a of the box A, which should be permanently attached to said box, is recessed and made to incline toward the center, where there is formed a channel inclined slightlytoward one side, so
that themelted ice and salt may flow off throu gh a hole in the side of the box A. B is the outer box, which is made larger than the box A, so
as to leave a space, 0, all around between the walls of the two boxes A B to receive the ice and salt. D is the door-way, which is formed through the sides of the boxes A B, and which is incased so as to entirely separate it from the space between said boxes. The door-way D is made of such a size as to allow the articles to be conveniently put in and taken out of the said box A, and is closed at its outer end by a door, E. The casing of the doorway D within the space G is covered with a U-shaped wooden frame, F, to protect said casing from the bar with which the ice and salt are packed into the said space 0. The lower part of the box B should be provided with a stop-cook or other suitable device for drawing 01f the melted ice and salt when required. The box B is provided with a close removable cover, I), for convenience in putting in the ice and salt.
With this construction the interior of the box A will be kept free from any moisture from the ice and salt, so that it will be perfectly dry, and thus suitable for preserving articles that moisture would injure.
The box Ais provided with racks or shelves G, resting upon cleats attached to its walls, to receive the articles to be placed in said box.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent- The inner metallic box A, shelved and provided with concave top a, the wooden casing B having detachable cover I), the chamber 0 between said boxes, the guard-frame F, and door-way D, all .combined in the same refrigerator, as and for the purpose set forth.
